First Dapper is EOL. Second the original problem is installed kubuntu- desktop inside a full installation. This should now create a new session to login, if not a new bug needs to be created with a supported release. If gtk2-engines-qt is still broken then it needs to be filed under that project. gtk2-engines-qt is quite broken if it's broken then it needs fixing. Uninstalling gtk2-engines-gtk-qt reverts the behaviour, as expected. However, I think it would be better to ask the user if this is what he/she because it makes the gnome system seem broken.
