Re: show desktop vs. show dashboard vs. milou

2014-01-21 Thread Rohan Garg

Perhaps it would be better to look into this for 14.10 btw.
Milou/Baloo will be more mature by that time and we can try more
daring things. As Milou's features overlap with KRunner, it may be
worth a thought to actually do a replacement attempt... deactivate
KRunner by default and pack Milou in the panel (given appropriate GUIs
to switch between the two in case a user prefers KRunner).
I think particularly in the release after an LTS those kinds of things
are more tolerated by the users.

Agreed, IMHO we should keep our current setup and push milou in the 14.10
Alpha's and Beta's to gauge feedback while keeping KDE SC defaults for 14.04

Cheers

Is it already decided that Kubuntu 14.10 will be based on KDE 4?

No, it entirely depends on how production ready Plasma 2 is by ~August this
year ( at least that's my opinion).

Throwing out a crazy solution, could you just release on a different date?

  The magic date is

Wednesday, April 16, 2014: KDE SC 4.13 Release

That's going to be tight with a release of Trusty on April 17th

   https://wiki.ubuntu.com/TrustyTahr/ReleaseSchedule

we could sneak it in the week before when we get the tars (I might
have been guity of this in the past) but I think realistically we have
to go with shipping 4.12 and having 4.12 in the updates PPA.
  Thoughts?

  Tricky.
Considering .13 won't get a feature release of workspace and it
otherwise lines up almost perfectly with trusty's schedule it could
just work quality-wise to push the final of 4.13 into 14.04.
Alternatively release with 4.13rc and SRU the final. Considering the
LTSness of things it may well be worthwhile to release with 4.13rc if
we can't get the final in as the 14.04.1 ISO would subsequently
contain something post-final anyway and in general it may be more
beneficial for LTS users to get the latest possible feature version.

(if our primary concern are low quality reviews that do not bother to
install/upgrade, then I guess 4.12 would be the way to go :P)

No one else has thoughts on this?

 HS

I think i'll take the risk and vote for 4.13 - although we should then try to
actually ship all the testing releases on time so we get a somewhat usable RC

No, not really. There are a lot of linkages in the process that make that
hard. The most we could do is skip 14.04 and release at 14.04.1 and I don't
think we want that with just the 9 month support window for 13.10.
