Re: [libreoffice-l10n] "are flagged" vs "appear as a typo"
Hi, Strictly speaking, spellchecker’s markings don’t mean ‘this is definitely a typo’, they rather mean ‘this word is not in my dictionary, so it maybe needs your attention’. So I would prefer ‘are flagged‘, but I am also not a native speaker. Saying ‘You’re volunteers so if you don’t want to put up with , we’ll wait for someone who does’ doesn’t seem the best stance to take. On the other hand, I’m also a stickler for correct typography, perfectly composed layouts and such things and I think that ‘cosmetic’ changes often go a long way to make a product appear much more professional and enjoyable to work with. > >> Please, please, PLEASE make English-to-English translation and play > >> with spaces and capital letters there... > > > > You realize that this suggestion makes no sense whatsoever? > > Why not? OTOH, setting that particular solution aside, I’m sure that other things can be done to somewhat improve the situation. For example, couldn’t some mechanism be implemented to explicitly mark certain changes as ‘small’ or ‘cosmetic’ so that the translations in Pootle are just marked as ‘Needs work’ instead of right out deleting them? Or even better, add a new status specifically meaning ‘Cosmetic change’ that allows re-confirming the existing translations en masse if the changes are irrelevant to them? RE: [libreoffice-l10n] LibreOffice Online pots updated
Hello, > This is just a heads-up that LibreOffice Online UI pot was updated in > Pootle today. Oops, I see that there is a new master branch now and the ~28,000 words that I have already translated in 5.3 but must click through again in 5.4 just got doubled… Please, can someone merge my recent work in the Bulgarian translation of 5.3 into 5.4 and Master? I translate via Pootle and at some point a big chunk of new strings got introduced in parallel in 5.3 and then-master. I continued working in 5.3, hoping that what I do will get integrated into master but now I would need to re-translate all those strings not once, but twice (and also translate twice everything new that is common between 5.4 and the new master, etc.). When a new master gets branched from a not-fully translated previous branch, effectively doubling all untranslated entries, shouldn’t later the work done on those entries in the older branch be transferred by default before the next branching which multiplies the empty entries yet again (while in the original branch, there already are translations for them)? It’s 4 am here, so I hope the above still makes sense. :) TIA, Mihail Balabanov -- To unsubscribe e-mail to: l10n+unsubscr...@global.libreoffice.org Problems? http://www.libreoffice.org/get-help/mailing-lists/how-to-unsubscribe/ Posting guidelines + more: http://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Netiquette List archive: http://listarchives.libreoffice.org/global/l10n/ All messages sent to this list will be publicly archived and cannot be deleted

[libreoffice-l10n] Request to merge translations
Hello, I’m not sure how I got the impression that work done on the branch of the latest numbered version gets integrated back into Master before a new numbered version is branched but it is apparently wrong. :) We have ~38,000 untranslated words in the Bulgarian translation of 5.4 that were previously in Master. I think the vast majority of them are units that I already translated in 5.3, because a large amount of new texts were introduced at a certain point in both and I concentrated on the current version which at the time was 5.3. Whom should I ask to merge them to 5.4 (and eventually the new Master branch?) Can we at least have a keyboard shortcut, or a way to disable the warnings when translating offline? Currently the only way of switching them off is ‘ctrl+down, *wait for page reload*, target tiny button with mouse, click, *wait for page reload*, repeat ~750 times’, not the most effective use of one’s volunteering time. :) > that LibreOffice uses PO files. Also, all examples in the Help that look like (but are not) XML tags should probably be changed from to something like non-tag, eliminating another class of false positives. [libreoffice-l10n] Can I just ignore the constantly-returning hundreds of ‘Critical errors’ on unchanged strings in Pootle?
Hello, Just to be sure, what is the current effect of leaving strings with ‘Critical errors’ in Pootle as they are? (E.g. they will still be used in the builds and not rejected and replaced with English, is that correct?) Also, are there any plans to unify the format of placeholders (%, $, {}, [], etc.) and get rid of the non-escaped XML elements and XML errors in the English text? Many ‘XML tags’ false positives come from things like instead of sth_that_is_not_an_XML_tag, and the ‘Placeholder’ false positives come from things like [Runtime], [None], etc. Constantly maintaining zero critical errors has become a Sisyphean task, especially for a one-person team for a small language, since the error flags constantly get reset for scores of otherwise unchanged strings and switching them back one by one is a very slow and tedious process (apparently can’t be done offline and/or automatically). If these actually do not prevent the strings from being picked up for the localized build, I’d rather let them stay red, regardless that sometimes this may hide some actual errors, especially if the alternative is to abandon the project. [libreoffice-l10n] Some questions about XML tag / placeholder warnings
Hello again with some more questions :) I have worked on the Bulgarian l10n of OpenOffice.org and then LibreOffice for quite some time and I have always assumed some things but in the light of the new warning system I decided to ask. :) * Is it OK to rearrange named placeholders because of different word order in the translation language, for example (like '$type$ library $name$' - 'library $name$ of type $type$')? Is it always safe to mute the corresponding warnings? * Is it OK to skip tag pairs and placeholders? In Bulgarian, repeating the name of something in several sequential sentences is often considered awkward style so I sometimes replace it with pronouns, skipping things like %PRODUCTNAME and emph(control name)/emph. * Is it OK to add tag pairs? In some contexts, it appears that the original misses a tag pair, for example the names of three of the four parameters of a function are boldfaced in the explanation but the last one is not. I have sometimes added emph tags for them, now I find these units due to the warnings and wander whether to mute or to remove the tags and wait until someone fixes the original. Also, in bookmark_value blocks sometimes the number of items differs because in English there are two names for something which in Bulgarian is a single term or vice versa. Is it OK to mute the warning or I should come up with exactly the same number of items? And last but not least: how do I proceed to report shortcomings in the original strings, e.g. superfluous tags like emphthinga/emphemphmajig/emph and stuff like that? Is the 'Report a problem with thia string' link for that? [libreoffice-l10n] Quotation marks in Bulgarian
Hello, How should I proceed to define the quotation marks used in the Bulgarian translation and stop the corresponding Pootle warnings? In our translation, we use simple double quotation marks ( ) and Bulgarian typographic quotation marks („ “) (open: U+201Е, Double Low-9 Quotation Mark, close: U+201C, Left Double Quotation Mark). Also, single quotation marks that are used in some of the original strings are also represented in Bulgarian by „“ (when they are used in plain text and not code snippets), so maybe that will also trigger a warning.
