[LAAMN] Interview with Subcomandante Marcos Now Translated

Please Distribute Widely

Dear Colleague,

An important interview with Zapatista Subcomandante Marcos conducted by
Sergio Rodriguez Lascano for Rebeldia magazine in Mexico came out this week.
While translating it to English, we divided it in four parts:

- Part I: The Extra Element: Organization

...in which the rebel spokesman offers his observations after traveling
through 20 Mexican states and listening to the words of the people who
struggle, in the countryside, in the cities, and with an interesting
discussion of what he learned from indigenous workers, primarily women,
displaced from their communities and now working in sweatshops in urban
Mexico...

http://narconews.com/Issue41/article1856.html

- Part II: A Message for the Intellectuals and their “Magnificent Alibi to
Avoid Struggle and Confrontation”

...in which Marcos answers the complaints by intellectuals about the
“correlation of forces” (offering a counter-critique about those who
theorize as an excuse to do nothing) and their critiques of the Other
Campaign’s call to topple the government and take back the means of
production from the rich...

http://narconews.com/Issue41/article1857.html

- Part III: A Different Path for Latin America Rides Through Mexico

...in which Marcos Speaks of a Country Called América, and names names:
Lula, Kirchner, Tabaré, López Obrador, Evo and Chávez... and asks, “So, What
is the Path?”

http://narconews.com/Issue41/article1861.html

- Part IV: “If You Listen, Mexico 2006 Seems a lot Like Chiapas in 1992”

...an analysis of the attack on Atenco, the counter-attack through the mass
media, the simulation of upcoming elections in Mexico and why Mexico in 2006
seems a lot like Chiapas in 1992...

http://narconews.com/Issue41/article1865.html

This interview, one of just five conducted this year by the Zapatista
spokesman
(the others with La Jornada, Televisa, CNN and TeleSUR) is the most detailed
in explaining the strategic and tactical decisions that the Other Campaign
in Mexico has made, as well as their theoretical and practical bases. It
is, in fact, the most detailed interview he has granted in more than five
years.

If over the past five months you've been watching the Other Journalism
coverage of the Other Campaign but are still scratching your head wondering
what is behind all of this, this interview is a good place to catch up.

It also provides some hints about where the Other Campaign goes from here,
beyond Mexico's July 2nd elections, including along the US-Mexico border and
with "the Other Campaign on the Other Side" in the United States.

All the interviews, of course, are linked from page one of Narco News and
from the Other Journalism page:

EXCLUSIVE: BOBBY KENNEDY JR. TO QUESTION 2004 PRESIDENTIAL
ELECTION IN MAJOR ROLLING STONE FEATURE ARTICLE!

SAYS 'EVIDENCE SHOWS HIGH-LEVEL REPUBLICANS
SUCCEEDED IN SCHEME TO STEAL ELECTION IN OHIO'!

MAG TO HIT STANDS FRIDAY, INTERNET ON THURSDAY,
PUBLICITY PUSH TO ACCOMPANY

By Brad Friedman
The Brad Blog
May 31, 2006

http://www.BradBlog.com/archives/2891.htm

A damning and detailed feature article, written by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.,
for Rolling Stone and documenting evidence of the theft of the 2004
Presidential Election is set to hit newstands this Friday, The BRAD BLOG can
now confirm. The online version of the article will be posted tomorrow
(Thursday) morning.

The article -- headlined on the cover as "Did Bush Steal the 2004 Election?:
How 350,000 Votes Disappeared in Ohio" -- has been several months in
development and will contend that a concerted effort was undertaken by
high-level Republican officials to steal the Election in Ohio -- and thus
the country -- in 2004!

Kennedy told The BRAD BLOG this morning that "the best evidence says the
Republicans succeeded" in their plan.

He writes in the 10-page long article, and confirmed to us today, that
evidence shows Ohio Sec. of State J. Kenneth Blackwell was "certainly in on"
the scheme, and there are indications that the effort went all the way up to
the White House.

Kennedy, who is co-host of Ring of Fire, a weekend show on Air America
Radio, is an environmental attorney and the son of the late Robert F.
Kennedy. This is his first public foray into the realm of Election Fraud,
Election Integrity, Electronic Voting and, in particular, the questionable
results of Election 2004.

A major publicity push is currently in the works to accompany the feature
story which is sure to get the attention of more than a few D.C. and Buckeye
State pols in addition to the mainstream media who have, of late, begun
reporting more frequently on the litany of concerns and now-documented
evidence that new electronic voting machines are hackable through a number
of means.

Several public appearances are currently being scheduled for Kennedy in the
coming weeks, including an appearance on The Colbert Report currently
scheduled for Monday, June 12.

Sources have told The BRAD BLOG that Kennedy "does not hold back in this
article."

One of the election integrity advocates involved in research and development
with Kennedy on the story told us a number of weeks ago that "[Kennedy]
essentially says everything that those of us who have been contending there
was massive chicanery in the '04 election were right, and the media and
politicians who ignored it at the time were wrong."

We'll have more details and information shortly from the story which
includes quotes from Democrats such as Howard Dean and John Kerry, as well
as pollster Lou Harris who also questions the validity of the 2004
Presidential Election in Ohio according to the article...

A sidebar included with the article calls for an investigation into
Electronic Voting machines prior to upcoming elections...More soon...

SECRETARY OF STATE: DEBRA BOWEN

South Bay state Senator Debra Bowen would be the secretary of state from
central casting. In her six years in the Assembly and eight in the Senate,
no one has been more concerned, and to better effect, about cleaning up our
political process than she. Her opposition to Diebold election technology is
also a lot stronger than that of her opponent, Sacramento-area state Senator
Deborah Ortiz. In this battle of the Debs, we strongly support Bowen.

Dear Friends of Open Voting:

Gail Work is working hard for Senator Debra Bowen [whose campaign for
Secretary of State is crucial], and she can use your help. Please get in
touch with her today. Gail is organizing phone banking all over California.
Read on for details.

Sen. Bowen . . . is already working hard to break the growing stranglehold
of Diebold (and others) over our vote counting in California and otherwise
ensure fair elections, not to mention campaign finance reform. We must have
reform to protect the right of every eligible vote to register and have
every vote counted -- among other important issues facing California. We
need strong Democratic voices and Bowen's is one of our brightest and
clearest voices out there. Her primary opponent has not shown leadership on
the important issues the Secretary of State makes or breaks.

Go to
to find out more about Debra Bowen -- an
extraordinary Democratic leader, with a fine legal mind, currently serving
as one of our most effective State Senators (termed out). She will beat the
Republican appointee, Bruce McPherson -- Bowen will do us proud. I hope you
will agree with me that she deserves our vote on June 6th.

With only days until the June 6 primary election, the Bowen campaign needs
more than just our votes: She needs our help in the final stretc

March 25th Coalition Initiating Sponsor of Protest for South Central Farmers

Where: Los Angeles Mayor's Mansion - 605 S. Irving Blvd, 8 blocks west
of Western (off Wilshire)

Why: Save the South Central Farm - Stop a potential Wal-Mart Warehouse

When: Tomorrow - Friday, June 2nd from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM

Contact: (323) 936-7266

The March 25th Coalition which initiated the action that brought one
million into the streets of Los Angeles on March 25th and the
successful nationwide boycott on May 1st is calling on all who believe
in justice to demand the city act immediately to stop the racist
eviction against the primarily Latino and immigrant farmers located on
the South Central Farm. For the city of Los Angeles to be willing to use
the power of eminent domain almost 14 years ago to attempt to force a
garbage incinerator on the community yet today not lift a finger to save
a farm that provides much needed food, oxygen and green space in South
Central is tantamount to actively supporting environmental racism
against this community.

What will reside on 41st Street and Alameda in Los Angeles? - A farm
serving the needs of children in South Central or a possible Wal-Mart
warehouse preparing for their exploitation?

We must make the mayor hear the united voices of justice in Los Angeles
so that, together, we can decide.

Friends,
I've been staying at the farm when I can. There is
much hope there. Please find a way to help out.
Please don't ever believe that you are powerless to

All things are possible, and we need to work together,
everyone of us, so we can see miracles.

Below is a note from the support committee of the S.
Central Farm...

We still need your support!

Day 9 of the Community Encampment:

As the threat of impending eviction looms, South
Central Farm needs your support to preserve the
nations largest urban farm, which serves as a 14-acre
oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle. This 14-year
old community gem functions as an active farm for more
than 350 families and fills a local community need for
fresh produce, green space and a safe haven in a
poverty-stricken region of Los Angeles.

What you can do:

1) Come to South Central Farm to join in our community
encampment and tree sit.

2) Attend an informational training session at the
farm tomorrow (Thursday) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to
learn effective strategies to support the farmers. If
you cant attend the whole session, come for as long as
you can!

3) Donate to support the South Central Farmers effort
to buy the land and maintain it as a community farm.

4) Drop off supplies used for camping and food at the
farm.

5) Walk around the farm every morning, from about 5
a.m. to 9 a.m.. Some believe the sheriffs will
attempt an eviction at dawn, which means really early.
It would be helpful for us all if there were
witnesses who just happended to be walking by, or
doing their morning walk etc... to be there, hopefully
with cameras, just in case something goes down.

6) Candlelight vigil every night at the farm, 7 p.m.
A profound procession in support of the S. Central
Farm.

7) Forward this message to friends and family!

To find out more or make a donation, please go to
http://www.southcentralfarmers.org.

By saving this farm we are establishing a precedent,
which prioritizes central, local food production, safe
open space for children, and the greening of America.

Julia Butterfly Hill, who is tree-sitting in the heart
of the farm, and has been fasting for 16 days, said
today We have to make our cities more livable so
people stop leaving them in order to live. Until
recently, the concept of sustainability has been
predominantly an option available only for the
wealthy. This project is about making sustainability

Dear Friends,
I am supporting my friend Bob McCloskey for U.S. Congress. Bob is
against this war in Iraq. He is for bringing the troops home now. Bob
has been speaking out against U.S. wars ever since I first met him and
his wife Linda Tubach when they returned from a trip to Iraq in 2000.
They came and spoke at the Santa Monica Unitarian Church about the
conditions the Iraqi people were living in under the sanctions. They
told us how 5,000 children were dying in Iraq every month due to the
sanctions placed on them by the United States & England. This was when
Clinton was president. Bob tells it how it is. He is a good man. I
worked with both Bob and Linda in the Save The Iraq Children Coalition
years before this latest war in Iraq.

Bob McCloskey

Bob McCloskey is a long time peace and justice activist. For twenty
years he fought for working men and women in the labor movement as a
Union Representative for SEIU. He is running for Congress on progressive
values of justice and peace. He supports immediate withdrawal of US
forces from Iraq, working to establish a multinational force to keep
Iraq secure, and increasing efforts to rebuild. Plans to create
permanent military bases in Iraq and plans to control Iraq's oil must be
renounced. Plans to attack Iran must also be abandoned and the doctrine
of pre-emptive war must be abolished.

The future economic crisis caused by record Federal deficits, record
trade deficits, record consumer debt, the rising cost of energy, and
global warming must be addressed. He will work to create jobs, restore
incomes, and reduce debt. He will fight to repeal tax cuts for the
wealthy, and give tax relief to struggling families. He will work to
provide incentives to corporations for developing alternative energy and
keeping jobs in the US. And, he will fight to reduce the bloated
"defense" budget.

He will work to end the influence of military contractors, corporations,
insurance companies, and other special interests on our government and
he will fight for "Clean Election" legislation and public financing for
all candidates.

He will protect our civil liberties. The passage of PATRIOT Acts I and
II allows for warrant less search and seizures, the collection of
information on what people read, the seizure of business and financial
records, and the monitoring of emails, and he will work for its repeal.
He will support efforts to impeach the President.

He supports universal healthcare, a woman's right to choose, raising the
minimum wage, amnesty for immigrants, the repeal of NAFTA and equal
rights for gays and lesbians. He opposes the death penalty and supports
reform of the criminal justice system. Learn more about Bob at his

[LAAMN] Reinhart: Recognize the Hamas Government!, Bennis: Olmert's Visit

2006-06-01 Thread Ed Pearl

http://www.tau.ac.il/~reinhart
THE HAMAS GOVERNMENT SHOULD BE RECOGNIZED

Tanya Reinhart
Yediot Aharonot , May 31, 2006, translated from Hebrew by Mark Marshall
(quotes and references added).

The Hamas government must be recognized, not only because recognition of
Hamas would be good for Israel, as the former Mossad head Ephraim Halevy
recently argued, (1) but because this is the right move by any criterion of
justice and international law. The U.S. and Europe decided, despite Israel's
opposition, to permit the Palestinian people to hold democratic elections.
According to Jimmy Carter's report in the "Herald Tribune", the elections
were "honest, fair, strongly contested, without violence and with the
results accepted by winners and losers. Among the 62 elections that have
been monitored by... the Carter Center, these are among the best in
portraying the will of the people." (2)

In a just and well-ordered world, it would be unthinkable for a government
that was elected in this way to be disqualified because Israel does not like
the choice of the electorate in question. But in a world in which the U.S.
rules, might is right, and might can define democracy as it chooses. Thus it
was announced that the outcome of the Palestinian elections would not be
recognized until the three "mantras" were fulfilled: Hamas must renounce
terror, honour previous accords, and recognize the State of Israel.
Meanwhile the Palestinian people would be punished and starved through an
economic boycott, in the hope that this will lead to the collapse of the
elected government.

In January 2005, Hamas announced its resolution to replace armed struggle
with political struggle and agreed to a unilateral ceasefire ("calm"). In
the 17 months since then, Hamas has not perpetrated a single terrorist
attack. According to security sources, since the election, Hamas has not
even participated in the launching of Qassam rockets from Gaza, most of
which are carried out by Fatah. (3) What exactly is the substance of the
demand that Hamas renounce terror?

Regarding previous accords, Hamas PM Haniyeh explained that according to the
Oslo Accords of 1993, after an interim period of five years, a Palestinian
state was to have come into existence. But Israel violated every clause of
the Accords and continued to colonize and to dispossess Palestinians of
their lands. From now on, he says, his government will only honour accords
that are good for the Palestinian people.

Since the Oslo Accords, we Israelis have become accustomed to the idea that
negotiations with the Palestinian Authority always revolve around the sole
question of what is good for Israel - the extent to which the Palestinians
are prepared to recognize its existence as a Jewish state and to take care
of its security. Suddenly Israel is confronted with an elected Palestinian
government which is not willing to play that game any more. Haniyeh is
telling the government of Israel: From now on, you will represent the
position of Israel in the negotiations, and we will represent the position
of the Palestinians. At the Algiers meeting of the Palestine National
Council in 1988, the Palestinian people undertook to recognize the partition
of the country and to be satisfied with a state within the 1967 borders.
Israel has not done a thing since then to prove that it is prepared to
accept such a compromise. The Palestinians will recognize the right of
Israel to exist only when Israel proves that it is prepared to recognize the
right of the Palestinian people to exist.

But that is precisely what the governments of Israel and the army have never
accepted. No Palestinian leadership has yet been found to be a suitable
partner for peace, but a leadership that announces that it represents only
the Palestinian people is in their eyes a real enemy that must be destroyed.

Olmert may have succeeded in garnering a majority in the U.S. Congress for a
boycott of the Hamas government, but in Israeli society itself he does not
have a majority. According to a poll by the Truman Institute in March of
this year, 62% of Israelis are in favour of negotiations with Hamas. (4) But
for quite some time now, the majority in Israel has had no say. At the
moment, what remains to be hoped for is that Europe will come to its senses
and also influence the U.S. to accept the democratic choice of the
Palestinian people.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:
Prof. Elva Salinas/619-962-2132
Jazmin Morelos/619-274-0894

WHAT: Western Regional Rally June 3rd 1:00pm at Larsen Park 455
Sycamore Rd San Ysidro, CA against the deployment of 6,000 National
Guards to the U.S.-Mexico border region. This is an act of
intimidation and violence. Immigration shall continue until the real
problem is addressed. Militarization of the border will only increase
the number of humans whose rights continue to be violated and die
along that region. We make a call to our community, to the
communities in the Western Region, and to all oppressed communities
to organize and oppose these fascist tactics- We say NO to the
militarization of the border! No to the Racist Minutemen! No to the
Racist Legislations! No to guest-worker programs! Aqui estamos y no
nos vamos!! ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!

WHEN: Saturday, June 3, 2006

WHERE: 455 Sycamore Rd.
San Ysidro, CA

TIME: 1:00pm

WHO: "March 25th Coalition against HR4437 San Diego/Si Se
Puede-United We Can", San Francisco organizations and the "March 25th
Coalition against HR4437 in Los Angeles," (the organizers of the mega
march of more than a million on March 25th) are joining efforts in
organizing to create a Mega March here in San Diego

We strongly believe in OUR points of unity and will not settle for
anything lessthan these demands!!

1. No to the anti-immigrant HR4437 and any other "copycat"
legislation from Congress like S2611

2. No to militarization of the border
3. No to criminalization of immigrant communities
4. No to the planned immigrant crackdown across the country
5. No to the guest worker program
6. Yes to amnesty for undocumented immigrants
7. Yes to immigrant family reunification
8. Yes to a humane path to citizenship
9. Yes to labor rights and living wages for all workers
10.Yes to full civil rights and liberties

Please unite with us and come to the border for a Western Regional
march and protest. I have attached flyers. Please contact Elva
Salinas, Jazmin Morelos, or Chrissie Jogoleff. Contact us if we can
help coordinate a way for all Western Organizations to come to the
border this upcoming weekend! We need to unite at the border and
protest against militarization!
