*This really is Big Brother: the leak nobody's noticed*

by digby

This McClatchy
piecehttp://www.mcclatchydc.com/2013/06/20/194513/obamas-crackdown-views-leaks-as.html#storylink=cpy
(written
by some of the same people who got the Iraq war run-up story so right while
everyone else got it wrong) is as chilling to me as anything we've heard
over the past few weeks about the NSA spying. In fact, it may be worse:

Even before a former U.S. intelligence contractor exposed the secret
collection of Americans’ phone records, the Obama administration was
pressing a government-wide crackdown on security threats that requires
federal employees to keep closer tabs on their co-workers and exhorts
managers to punish those who fail to report their suspicions.

President Barack Obama’s unprecedented initiative, known as the Insider
Threat Program, is sweeping in its reach. It has received scant public
attention even though it extends beyond the U.S. national security
bureaucracies to most federal departments and agencies nationwide,
including the Peace Corps, the Social Security Administration and the
Education and Agriculture departments. It emphasizes leaks of classified
material, but catchall definitions of “insider threat” give agencies
latitude to pursue and penalize a range of other conduct.

Government documents reviewed by McClatchy illustrate how some agencies are
using that latitude to pursue unauthorized disclosures of any information**,
not just classified material. They also show how millions of federal
employees and contractors must watch for “high-risk persons or behaviors”
among co-workers and could face penalties, including criminal charges, for
failing to report them. *Leaks to the media are equated with espionage.*

“Hammer this fact home . . . leaking is tantamount to aiding the enemies of
the United States,” says a June 1, 2012, Defense Department strategy for
the program that was obtained by McClatchy.

When the free free press, explicitly protected in the bill of rights
becomes equivalent to an enemy of the United States something very, very
bad is happening.

The administration says it's doing this to protect national security and
that it is willing to protect those who blow the whistle on waste, fraud
and abuse. But that is not how the effect of this sort of program is going
to be felt. After all, it's being implemented across the federal
government, not just in national security:

The program could make it easier for the government to stifle the flow of
unclassified and potentially vital information to the public, while
creating toxic work environments poisoned by unfounded suspicions and
spurious investigations of loyal Americans, according to these current and
former officials and experts. *Some non-intelligence agencies already are
urging employees to watch their co-workers for “indicators” that include
stress, divorce and financial problems.
*
“It was just a matter of time before the Department of Agriculture or the
FDA (Food and Drug Administration) started implementing, ‘Hey, let’s get
people to snitch on their friends.’ The only thing they haven’t done here
is reward it,” said Kel McClanahan, a Washington lawyer who specializes in
national security law. “I’m waiting for the time when you turn in a friend
and you get a $50 reward.”

The Defense Department anti-leak strategy obtained by McClatchy spells out
a zero-tolerance policy. Security managers, it says, “must” reprimand or
revoke the security clearances – a career-killing penalty – of workers who
commit a single severe infraction or multiple lesser breaches “as an
unavoidable negative personnel action.”

Employees must turn themselves and others in for failing to report
breaches. “Penalize clearly identifiable failures to report security
infractions and violations, including any lack

The below statement was written by our Brazilian comrades organised around
the Marxist journal Esquerda Marxista.

[image: fist] http://www.marxist.com/images/stories/other/fist.jpgThe
right wing is attempting to co-opt the huge demonstrations of the last few
days by introducing a bias towards nationalism, against corruption, against
PEC 37, etc. There have also been some placards against abortion, for a
military coup, and for Joaquim Barbosa (President of the Supreme Court who
condemned the PT leaders without evidence in Criminal Case 470) to become
the new president of the republic.

In this sense, another component could already be seen in the demonstration
on June 18 in Sao Paulo, and in a much intense way on June 20 in several
cities: the attack on the free expression of leftist organizations.

The Marxist Left has been participating in the protests against the fare
increase in Sao Paulo since the beginning, our members were also suppressed
by riot police in the protests last week, our banners were taken by the
police on the way to the June 13 protest. Now, some protesters also tried
to take our banners and flags.

On Tuesday (18/06), as we marched down Avenida Paulista, we received
serious threats for holding up our banners in the demonstration, what began
with shouts of lower that flag and parties out, passed into angry
shouts from some bullies dressed in suits who were encouraging the others,
they threatened to take our banners and warned us that it was best to lower
them in order not to create confusion. We distanced ourselves from this
group and continued with our banners held high.

On the same day we heard that other militants of left groups were
threatened, flags were taken from the hand of protesters and even militants
expelled from the rally in Praça da Sé

At the protest on June 20, in the face of previous threats, the left
organisations marched in blocks seeking to protect themselves from attacks.
But the other side was very well prepared. Neo-fascist elements armed with
knives, provocateurs who seemed infiltrated police, pepper gas, all
encouraging a layer of youth who has been awakened to political life, but
is still influenced by the maneuvers of the mainstream media and the
provocateurs, a group that throughout the whole march put pressure on the
block formed by parties and leftist organizations, trade unions and student
organizations. After about 2.5 km, with a united stewarding service which
was poorly organised, the immense pressure expelled all those who had any
hint of being left wing, as well as ourselves also militants from PSTU,
PCO, PSOL, PT, UJS, UNE, CUT, Intersindical, Conlutas, etc.., all pushed
out of Avenida Paulista. A most serious attack on democracy, the right to
organize and fight.

This did not happen only in São Paulo, militants who carried flags of CUT
were attacked in Rio de Janeiro. In Belo Horizonte, activists were harassed
and after an early clash they withdrew. In Florianópolis the demonstration
was divided.

We heard slogans not only against the PT, but against the Communists,
against the Reds. To the website of the PCO (Workers' Cause Party) was also
attacked.

In this situation the leadership of the PT has a great responsibility, the
policy of class collaboration distanced the party from the struggles of the
people, the masses were left orphaned of a militant leadership,
implementing in government a policy that benefits the powerful and not the
people, such as the increase in the fares in São Paulo which was carried
out by mayor Haddad (from the PT). This demoralized the party and the
militants. On Thursday, the leadership called on the ranks to participate
in the demonstrations in a Red Wave, but did nothing to mobilize, and the
leaders were absent. They played with those that answered the call,
especially the youth of the PT, who then suffered the assaults.

This serious situation demands that all parties and all left organizations,
trade unions, student organizations, social movements, all those who defend
the democratic right of freedom of organization and expression of the left,
all in one voice repudiate such repression and ORGANIZE the joint defense
against these fascist attacks which only benefit the

[LAAMN] Century City march and riot

2013-06-23 Thread John Johnson
In todays, Sunday Los Angeles Times, edition, the second page is
dedicated to the 1967 Century Plaza anti-war demonstration and riot.

I was there and in front of the March. As we got in front of the Hotel
where President Johnson was , I urged folks to stop and have a rally
(they were going to march back to the park). I was joined by a few
others then the Progressive Labor Party formed a line.. Since there were
close to 20,000 folks there it got very crowded. Except for loud
anti-war chanting folks were peaceful. But the cops decided it was an
unlawful action and just attacked us with billy clubs and more. I was
in a group that got push into a construction site. I was getting hit
by the police. I got down to Pico and was in between to rows of cops
who started to beat people, One guy sit down and got the crap beat out
of him. As I was getting surrounded by cops, a car came though the
crowd and it was a girlfriend and I hopped into her car, just in time
from getting the crap beat out of me. Ah memories.

[LAAMN] Salvadoran Military List of Victims a Smoking Gun

SAN SALVADOR, Jun 20 2013 (IPS) - The Salvadoran army kept a detailed list
of names and photographs of leftists detained or sought during El
Salvador’s 1980-1992 civil war. The report is the first official military
document proving the armed forces’ direct involvement in forced
disappearances and other abuses.

Activists told IPS that, besides serving as evidence of human rights
crimes, the document confirms the links between the army and the death
squads, since a number of the detainees on the list were later forcibly
disappeared by the far-right paramilitaries.

The title on the cover of the list of 1,975 people described as “terrorist
criminals” is “Yellow Book”. It was apparently written by the joint chiefs
of staff of the armed forces, whose initials EMCFA – for Estado Mayor
Conjunto de la Fuerza Armada – can be seen clearly printed on each of its
270 pages.

“The book proves that all of our denunciations were true – that the
security forces and army were behind the forced disappearances, operating
as death squads,” Guadalupe Mejía, the president of CODEFAM, an association
of families of victims of human rights violations, told IPS.

The Yellow Book was found three years ago, hidden in a cranny in a house in
San Salvador by someone who was moving house. IPS and the Mexican daily La
Jornada have a copy of the report.

Carlos Santos, president of the Salvadoran Association of Torture Survivors
(ASST), said the fact that some 250 victims of forced disappearance, whose
cases were documented by the United Nations truth commission, are on the
list confirms that at some point they were detained by the military or
police.

“This provides new evidence that it was members of the army who seized the
victims of forced disappearance. Everyone knew it was them, but the
evidence (from the military) was lacking,” Santos told IPS.

The report, marked “confidential”, is dated July 1987. But it has names of
people who were detained, killed or “disappeared” in the late 1970s and
even earlier, which indicates that the date refers to the last time it was
updated.

Death squads and the security forces are blamed for the majority of the
75,000 killings and 8,000 forced disappearances committed during the
12-year armed conflict, which ended when a peace agreement was signed by
the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front (FMLN) and the right-wing
government of Alfredo
Cristianihttp://www.ipsnews.net/2008/11/rights-el-salvador-ex-president-cristiani-faces-charges-in-spain/
.

Many of the photos in the report were clearly taken in military or police
installations, with the dishevelled and sometimes bruised detainees
standing against a wall with an anguished look on their faces.

Other photos were apparently taken from the detainees’ identity documents,
obtained by military intelligence from municipal civil registries. Yet
others are surveillance photos taken by cameras with zoom.

Some of the people in the report were senior FMLN leaders, listed as “most
wanted”. Others were leftwing intellectuals, trade unionists, rural
community leaders and social activists, considered “subversives” during El
Salvador’s civil war.

“The book is evidence that these people were captured by the security
forces and then tortured,” Miguel Montenegro, director of the NGO Human
Rights Commission of El Salvador, told IPS. “Files on them were compiled,
and they were later ‘disappeared’ – in other words, killed.”

Santos said “after they were captured, their photos were taken to put in

I found out about the death of this great artist two weeks ago after I had
already sent out LUV News, so I couldn't do a tribute to her then.
Therefore, I'm doing it now.

I had the honor of seeing *Franca Rame* and her equally phenomenal artist
husband *Dario Fo* perform 30 years ago. And I've never forgotten them. How
could I? How can you forget that kind of beauty, power, humor, insight, and
talent? How can you forget being moved to the core of your being? How can
you forget that there are still a few people in the world who stand up for
what they believe in, for justice, for truth, for what is right? Who do it
no matter the consequences? And who even make art out of it? That was *Franca
Rame*http://theater.nytimes.com/2013/05/31/theater/franca-rame-italian-actress-and-playwright-dies-at-83.html?pagewanted=all.
That is Dario Fo. They were and are world treasures. -LS

Though I'm glad to see Robert Scheer writing stuff like this, I can't
forget that he was one of the ones banging the drum the loudest for the
re-election of Obama. He ignored the fact that Obama has not only
continued, but expanded, the worst abuses of the Bush administration.
Scheer was as blinkered and benighted as the hordes of voters who could

Dear Friends,

The worldwide nuclear village is intent on downplaying the health risks
from the disaster at Fukushima Daiichi. Two UN agencies- the World Health
Organization and the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic
Radiation (UNSCEAR) have issued reports that there are no ill health
effects at all- no deaths, no increased cancers. Robert Stone, maker of a
new movie, Pandora's Promise, says the same, and claims that the neurotic
fear of radiation is the worst effect of the disaster. So does a recent
Forbes article.

The Big Lie is aimed at convincing the world public to tolerate more and
more nuclear disasters and nuclear waste production, by licensing and
operating more and more nuclear reactors. This is an obvious attempt to
counter the citizen's movement worldwide, that recently shut down San
Onofre for good, and has led the Germans to phase out their nukes, the
Japanese people to oppose reopening all their reactors, etc.

An independent investigation is urgently needed to bring the truth to
light. Please continue to circulate the petition

No health risk from Fukushima radiation, UN says
May 31, 2013
Radiation leaked after Japan's Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 is
unlikely to cause any ill health effects in the future, a UN scientific
committee drawing up a major new report said Friday.

Radiation exposure following the nuclear accident at Fukushima-Daiichi...
did not cause any immediate health effects, the UN Scientific Committee
on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR) said.

It is unlikely to be able to attribute any health effects in the future
among the general public and the vast majority of workers for which dose
histories have been assessed

Like We've Been Saying -- Radiation Is Not A Big Deal

...UNSCEAR's chair Wolfgang Weiss stated that no radiation health effects
had been observed in Japan among the public, workers or children in the
area of the damaged nuclear power plants, in keeping with studies already
published by the World Health Organization and Tokyo University. Doses of
radiation received by people near the damaged power plant were so low that
no discernible health effect could be expected...

tens of thousands of Japanese (are) living in fear of radiation levels so
low that the fear itself is the only thing that is hurting them,..

among Fukushima kids
Source: THE ASAHI SHIMBUN

Date: June 6, 2013

Health experts are at odds on whether radiation from the Fukushima
nuclear accident led to an unexpectedly high occurrence rate of thyroid
gland cancer among children in Fukushima Prefecture. [...]

Twelve of the 174,000 children who have undergone the comprehensive
checkups have been found with thyroid gland cancer, with an additional
16 suspected of having the disease.

A majority of radiologists, as well as the prefectural government, have
dismissed speculation that radiation from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear
power plant had any role in the numbers. But others said it is

Study: 30-somethings worse off than their parents' generation

(CBS News) WELLFLEET, Mass. - Americans in their 30s are the only age group
in this country worse off than their counterparts three decades ago.

A recent study http://www.urban.org/publications/412766.html by the Urban
Institute shows the net worth of today's 30-somethings -- adjusted for
inflation -- is down 21 percent from what 30-somethings enjoyed in 1983.

Myya Beck, 33, has her own business and a baby on the way, but debt and
bills are making it difficult for her to live a comfortable life.
/ CBS News

At 33, Myya Beck is doing what she loves: Running her own fitness studio in
Wellfleet, Mass. She works morning and night, six to seven days a week, and
still struggles just to get by.

Ask her if she has any savings, and she laughs. Forty dollars, she said.
Much of the money she earns is go to bills, college loans, a car payment
and rent for her house.

Beck's entire generation is facing this struggle, and economists believe
part of the reason is because the traditional means of building wealth are
disappearing.

Buying a home has been a historic source of wealth, but since 1990, there's
been a significant drop in home ownership for people under age 39,
according to the U.S. Census.

And then there's college debt, which, according the Federal Reserve of New
York, has more than tripled in just the last 10 years.

Beck still owes over $15,000 for her college education.
  CBS

It's stressful, very stressful, she said. It weighs on me as a person
that I'm not doing something right, that I'm not doing enough.

She's also just learned some really big news.

Now we also have a baby on the way, she said. I mean, this is everything
that I've ever wanted. I've always wanted to own my own business. I've
wanted to be a mom and have a family most importantly, of my own, so I've
gotten those things, but financially how do I do it?

She said the uncertainty scares the living dickens out of me.

My glass is always half full. I'm still day by day trying to something
more. What else is there? she said.

Beck is just one of a generation that if things don't change, will be
poorer than their parents. It's the first time that's happened in America
since the Great Depression.
