Hi Tamara,

I think the Moravia 40/2 is just what you're looking for. 47 colors, a tad
finer than 35/2 and linen.

[lace] Thread choice, again

2004-02-16 Thread Tamara P. Duvall
Gentle Spiders,

I'm working on getting the first of my "Windrose Variations" (Christmas
ornaments) into a publish-able format, and have run into a problem...
In my usual, long-winded way, let me describe it.

There's not much room for enlarging/reducing of the pricking... The
prerequisites are: a) the ornament, as a whole, can't be but *so* big,
b) the "base thread" is thicker than the (metallic) worker for the best
effect, c) 2-ply is better than 3-ply and linen is better than cotton
for the "base thread", d) the threads ought to be easy to obtain, e)
we're thinking *colour*.

OK. The metallic is no sweat; several -- easily available, from a
multitude of suppliers -- brands can be used. It's the "base thread"
that's giving me fits...

My first two (completed; there are a few which had been "ditched" early
on ) samples were made in Madeira Tanne/Cotona 20/2 cotton. The
thread worked very well for size (though the final results are a touch
"limp"), but I'm not sure it's still available (the thread came from my
"stash"). OTOH, it gave me a point of reference (Brenda Paternoster's
"Threads for Lace"); it has a "wrap ratio" of 24, so I thought finding
a substitute would be relatively easy...

Not so :)
Remember: I'm looking for *linen* and for a *2-ply* and for *colour*...
The same (24) "wrap" in linen (that I happened to have on hand) is
Bockens 50/2. It works up a *little* finer than Madeira Tanne 20, and
would, probably, be "the thinnest acceptable". *If* it were available
in colours.. So far as I'm aware, it's only available in white.

I had some Bockens 35/2 on hand (lots of lovely colours available, if
not in my personal stash ), and tried that. At a "20 wrap" it's *a
possible*, but on the outermost end of the spectrum; it's almost too
thick, which makes the whole difficult to tension (and to get the
seed-beads sewn on).

So, what I'm asking is this:

21-24 "wrap" range of thickness... *Which* are available in colour? And
*where* can I (or anyone reading the IOLI Bulletin) get them?

Yours, somewhat bummed out; we had "Presidents' Day" today which, in
"real terms" translates to "no mail, no library, no bank service"...
And no newspaper, because we get it at the U, and the students are on
vaccation (again!). The "no mail" was the hardest blow, however; I'm
still waiting for my copy of Lace... :) *On top of which*, I doubt all
of our past and present Presidents are all that happy to be celebrated
together, like some "Presidential baby mush"...

Hi Jean et al,

It sounds really interesting - and such a lot of hard work!

I wonder if many of you have seen the wonderful tapestry in Fishguard,

different
needlewomen,
Haven't seen that one but, in the autumn of '88, came across another
"community effort tapestry", in Exeter... For a donation of one GBP,
one could put in a stitch or two in the "New World" tapestry, and get a
card (with one's personal "spot" marked) and a snippet of the wool
thread used -- as a souvenir. My (then) 11yr old son and I spent a very
exciting afternoon (while my DH spent a very boring one ) stitching,
and chatting to the ladies who did it on a more regular basis. They all
thought I was a bad mother (the boy knew the diffrence between a "tent
stitch" and "basketweave", even though he admitted "his thing" was
cross-stitch ), but they also thought he was the cutest thing to
have come out of America (the New World being worked on), so it was
OK... :)

Shortly afterwards, I came across a BL teaching manual, and my world
turned upside down :)

You think *you're* dumb I've *yet* to conclude a *single* purchase
via Internet... :)

I, myself, subscribe to IOLI via a US check (cheque), so never had to
cope with the Internet version, and don't visit the site much. Nor am I
certain that it's OK to "give out" the Treasurer's e-adress, if it
can't be reached from the website. *Nor* am I a "high muckety-muck" in
the inner circle of the IOLI... :)

But.

I've been in touch with the President (of IOLI; Mr B and I do not have
anything in common to discuss) recently, on that very subject
(subscription payment via "plastic").

As things stand now, it is *not* possible to subscribe to IOLI using
"plastic". But the matter has been discussed, and is scheduled to be
discussed further in 6-8 weeks, when the vote will be taken. Hopefully,
it'll come on the side of "yes" :) S-mail subscriptions are still
likely to remain on the "check-only" basis, but, with luck, one will be
able to pay with a credit card if subscribing via the electronic
miracle...

it took me about 10 minutes to figure out how to send to the list (sure
I've done it before?!)
You probably have some form of "addressbook", yes? Cue in "Arachne
Lace" in the "name" ("to") segment, <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> in the "address"
line, and something easy to remember ("lace-tech"?) in the nick-name
field... That ought to "do it". I have "Arachne" and "chat" as
nicknames for the two "spurs" (tech and non-tech), and both work a
treat...

[lace] Honiton lace manufacturers

2004-02-16 Thread apcdlally
Hi all

I've just resubscribed after a couple of months off the list and it's nice to
be back.

This is one for all you history buffs

I have recently met a lady who is researching and writing a book on her family
history.

She is a direct descendant of one Eliza Darvall, who was granted royal
appointment as lace manufacturer of Honiton lace from Queen Victoria in1842.
Eliza is mentioned briefly in Dr Yallop's book (but he spells her name
Darwall)
My friend has inherited many letters and some original designs and prickings
from Charles Darvall, Eliza's son, who designed lace for his mothers
business.

I was wondering if any of you who have access to museums, old prickings etc.(
prickings may be signed C.G.D. ) have ever come across either of these two
names. Any information could help fill in some of the gaps.

Thanks
Annette in Melbourne Australia

I've seen many more of this style of pricker on sale in Germany than in UK,
so you might want to widen your search a little.

still the case, or how I could confirm that information, or for that matter make

[lace] Help - UK suppliers of thimble its/Tim Parker

2004-02-16 Thread Viv Dewar
Hi everyone. I need to buy a new "pricker". I know most of our suppliers
could do the necessary, but, being an accountant, I want to minimise the
cash paid for P&P and make up a list of stuff to buy. As well as the
pricker I also need some "Thimble Its"
I've only ever bought these from Tim Parker & his URL
http://www.cyberlink.co.uk/timparker is coming up "not found". I've had
a quick look at Biggins & Larkholme Lace & can't see any.
Please can you advise me who in the UK does "Thimble Its" & Does Tim
Parker have a new URL?
Will any suppliers reply to me direct rather than the list in
consideration for those who don't want to read commercial "Bumpf"!
Thanks

[lace] Re: Binche

2004-02-16 Thread Ilske und Peter Thomsen
Hello Devon,
That's exactly what I feel about laces especialy what is called
Guipure-lace.
When I visited Binche about 5 years ago a fsaw in the museum there (it
is not a lace museum it is about Carneval but very interesting) an
article from M. Risselin- Steenebrugen, when I am not wrong about the
name, in which she explained why Binche-lace is called so. They found
on such a binche- Carneval-dress at the bottom of the trousers such a
piece of lace and so gave the whole group this name. Unfortenatly they
haven't another sheet of this and because it was in a box they
couldn't make a copie for me.
I learn all this Flemish laces (Valenciennes, Flandres, Point de Paris
and Binche) by Annemarie Verbeke and that means not only the practical
side, but before the designing of them all. And then you see how they
have become their special face during the time. And the highest one is
Binche which has nearly all elements in it but no grid any more. And
how it come from a lace who look a bit wild till the Point de Fee.
I am sorry but I think my english isn't well enough to explain all the
details. But as more laces you could examine the more you see how it
has changed during the time. And on Lorelei's site you find also good
examples.
Greetings from a still grey but dry Hamburg in Germany
Ilske
