[lace] point de fée
Point de Fée is the French translation of the Flemish word : toveressekant, meaning the finest of finest Binche laces, with a lot of tallies e.g.the Belfry in the Binche syllabus of AM Verbeke. Binche is the name of a Belgian French speaking city and gave its name to the very fine lace we know as binche or point de fée or toveressekant. It has certainly nothing to do with Mechlin lace, being the queen of laces, so called in a poem in the 18th century. [lace] Help needed--Display of lace pillow
Hello all-- A conservator friend sent this to me from a conservation listserve, and I am forwarding it here in case someone in or near Toronto can help the writer. regards, Lorraine Weiss in Albany, NY From: Shirley Ellis [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: November 5, 2007 10:51:25 AM EST To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: lace-making pillow Reply-To: Textile Conservators [EMAIL PROTECTED] Hello All, We have a lace-making pillow WITH bobbins and attached lace going out on display. The threads are currently tangled up and the bobbins splayed out in a half circle. The curator would like this pillow to look as if it was being worked, ie with portions of the bobbins looped over pins in various sections on the pillow. I am concerned about the weight of the bobbins, hanging from their threads and would like to have them supported on display. Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of seeing lace-making pillows and bobbins on exhibit and how this was handled? Obviously, whatever is done needs to be unobtrusive and right now I can't think of anything other than plexi tiers which really isn't that minimal. Any ideas would be welcome. thanks shirley Shirley Ellis Textile Conservator, Royal Ontario Museum 100 Queen's Park Toronto, ON M5S 2C6 ph: 416 586-5878; fax: 416 586-8036 [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Tootal Sylko and Amann Sylko are more recent brands. My guess is that your recently acquired Sylko will be very similar to the Coats and Dewhurst brands. Mine says Tootal Sylko. How do those Sylko sizes compare to say Tanne 30, which looks similar? I *think* Tootle Sylko is only 5-10 years ago. Sylko is 3 ply, so 'rounder' thread than Tanne which is 2 ply. 2 ply thread flatten more and spread out to fill a bigger space - ideal for satin stitch machine embroidery, which Tanne is made for. In BL a two ply is best suited to laces with a lot of twists (point ground) as the threads intermesh better and make a softer, more draping lace. 3 ply is firmer, stronger for sewing seams and makes a crisper lace. [lace] IOLI winter issue -- oops
Gentle Spiders, Last night, I wrote: [...]the forthcoming (Jan '09) winter issue of the IOLI Bulletin [...] That's *wrong*. The Blast From the Past Bulletin issue will be coming out much earlier than that: January '08, just a couple of months away, not in a year+. While I'm sure most of you realized that, I thought I'd better make the formal correction. [lace] Elizabeth: the Golden Age lace
Hi All, I saw a poster for the latest Elizabeth movie last week and made sure to look at the lace! It looked a lot like tatting to me though I thought maybe it was some ancient BL pattern I'm unfamiliar with G. Jane in Vermont, USA about to go rake some more leaves. So far so good this year, last year I managed to fall into the brook - B [EMAIL PROTECTED] - To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] containing the line: unsubscribe lace [EMAIL PROTECTED] For help, write to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Yes, and there was a ruff inappropriately made of late 18th century lace in an ad in the New York Times. And she can't even work on her lace with the bobbins hanging from the wrong side of the pillow, while she is waiting to be sold.
