[lace] The Needleworker's Companion - for problems
Dear Susan and others interested, May I recommend a book to you? "The Needleworker's Companion" by Shay Pendray, 1-931499-07-1, published by Interweave Press (which also publishes PieceWork Magazine). I met Shay when we took the same EGA teacher certification course together almost 40 years ago. She owns a retail needlework shop in Michigan, has taught internationally, traveled widely, written books, and hosts/produces a PBS (American TV Channel) series called Needle Arts Studio. This 112-page spiral-bound book is about needlework, and has a heap of information about threads and techniques that apply to many other needlearts - including lace - if you think about what you are reading and apply it to lacemaking problems. It is small and will fit in your tote bag. I recommend you read just 5 pages a night and think about them. In less than a month you will have read the book, and by reading only 5 pages, you'll have had plenty of time to make lace. Go to _www.interweave.com_ (http://www.interweave.com) Put "Needleworker's Companion" in the search box at top right. Find the book by Shay Pendray. Or you can Google "Shay Pendray". The 5th entry (of over 14,000 about her) is a book review. Jeri Ames Lace and Embroidery Resource Center In a message dated 9/8/2008 1:50:56 P.M. (Did I mention that I'm not fond of x-stitch!?!) Well duh--that's why--but hey--who's got time to fiddle with a laying tool for such a soporific technique? As to mixing threads, anyone who has stitched with/cussed at Kreinik blending filament will agree--BUT--sometimes I've gotten some lovely shading by mixing threads in the needle. I've only tried this with cotton & have not yet done this with lace--but I do wonder whether 2 low-twist threads could be twisted together, a la the Japanese method of twisting flat silk?? They also twist high-twist silks together at the JEC but the result is quite squirrelly & intended for couching. Susan **Pt...Have you heard the news? Re: [lace] Barbara Hirst
Stumpwork books are shelved in the Lace section of my library, Catherine. If you are making figural laces, using needlelace stitches, stumpwork instruction books are helpful. The two stumpwork (featuring needlelace) 80-page hardback books that Catherine Barley mentioned were published by Merehurst Ltd., located on Lacy Road in London. It is possible they have been re-issued in paperback form. They contain several pages each of history about 17th C. stumpwork. However, the books mostly feature charming updated figures of people and animals (not in 17th C. clothing and illustrating Biblical stories), and wonderful ideas for manipulating thread in unusual ways. 1. "Raised Embroidery - a Practical Guide to Decorative Stumpwork", 1993 & 1994, 1-85391-203-4 2. "New Designs in Raised Embroidery", 1997, 1-85391-578-5 In addition, the Australian magazine - Inspirations, Issue 59 - arrived here last week. In the book review section was another Kay and Michael Dennis book (softcover) issued in 2007 by Search Press. It is 3rd in a Search Press series, so I looked them up. They are Beginner's Guide to Series: 1. Stumpwork, 2. Stumpwork Figures, 3. Stumpwork Seasons. Jeri Ames Lace and Embroidery Resource Center -- Dear spiders Having just read Susan's email about the EGA seminar/50th year celebration, I realise that we have some embroidery folk on the list. I had a telephone call from Roy Hirst yesterday morning to tell me that his wife Barbara had passed away peacefully in her sleep late last Saturday night. Barbara & Roy Hirst have had two books published on figural Stumpwork and are acknowledged for the revival of Stumpwork in the UK. I am sure that many of you have copies of their two books and some of you in Sydney may recall seeing pictures of their beautiful Millennium Casket which I showed when giving a talk last year at the Australian EGA 50th Anniversary. [lace] lace pattern from germany
Hello Ann-Marie and those that are interested. I looked on the website you specified for lace patterns http://www.kloeppelwerkstatt.de/ I emailed them about how to order and pay for patterns, but have not had a response from them yet. However, it also stated that their patterns are availble at the Kantcentrum in Belgium, so I emailed them, and had a response which translated into English says: Dear madam, Many of these patterns can indeed be ordered from us. Just quote the order number for the particular pattern, plus a description of the pattern. We will then deal with your order and will let you know how much the postal charges to your country will be. Regards, Anne They did not respond about my question of how to pay for them, but their website does state that they accept VISA. Hope this helps. Should I hear anything from Germany, I'll let you know. I did find the ebay ID for the german shop: kloeppelshop and they accept Paypal through ebay. Perhaps you could contact them that way?
