[lace] IOLI Convention- clarification please
On the registration form in the Bulletin it gives Feb 14 as the beginning day of registration, with all entries before that given equal status to those postmarked Feb. 14, if I am reading this correctly, although another reading might be that Feb. 13 is the date by which the registration must be postmarked to be considered with the first cohort. However on the website, the dates seems to be Feb. 17. Also, on the printed registration form there is reference to more information about the classes and photographs of projects. But I have not been able to find that. I would particularly like to see what Nancy Evan's needlelace necklace looks like and the class in Nature in Lace. Could somebody help me find this expanded version of the class list. All I can find is the same list as is in the Bulletin. [lace] Lacing in the heat
some of the students kept tubs of cold water under their desks and soaked their feet while they worked. This sounds like the opposite of the "Old Days" when the lacemakers bought a farthing's worth of hot coals from the bakery, on their way to Lace School, and put them in the Dickey Pot, and under their skirts to keep their feet Warm!! Hot or Cold - it sounds like a good idea!!! Regards from Liz in Melbourne, Oz. lizl...@bigpond.com -- I am using the free version of SPAMfighter. [lace] Aussie bush fires - Helen Gannac
Yes, Helene was safe from the bush fires, and is now in France, I believe.. Like me, she lives in Melbourne. Shirley Meier, also on this list, is safe, too, although she lives in Geelong. I have not heard of any lacemakers who have been caught in the fires. We are all keeping our fingers crossed, as many people are still missing, but we can't think of anyone who lives in that area. We have an Aussie chat list for lacemakers - much like this list, - and all the Victorians on the list have "checked in" I think. It is SO comforting to know we have so many friends throught the world who care. Thank you all. We surely need some good news right now, and reading your caring messages is Really good News. Re: [lace] Any ideas?
Dear Ann, Suggest you baste your heart on the *sleeve of a garment* you wear to lace events. A conversation opener. And, you can say you wear your lace heart on your sleeve to express "your love of lace". Lightly basted will mean it is easy to remove when you wash the garment. Actually, this sounds like a nice project for a lace meeting or a lace class. Can be any kind of lace but approximately the same size for all. People will remember your group when they see several people wearing the hearts. Recommend that they all be the same color, like red, and on the same side (all left sleeve, or all right sleeve. [lace] Thanks
Hello! Thanks to all who wrote to explain the lace-digest system. I didn't realize the consequences of my selections when I signed up. I must sort that out. Thanks for posting the link to the Gallician catalogue. WOW--I must take a few more lessons before I tackle those! I don't recall seeing the diagrams in the previous catalogues, so these are a big help/improvement. Lastly, what to do with all those stray lacey bits? I came to lace world from embroidery land. As a crazy quilter, there is no motif too small or poorly made (my work) that it can't have a re-purposed life on a block! But, small motifs also look good on those notecards with the "window" cut into the stock, sort of a "gift with card" momento. And I've stitched bits on felt for artist's trading cards & as the front cover of a needle book. A small strip of the "little pea" became the trunk of a tree, with the plaited ends as branches. I embroidered some leaves, added mini buttons for buds & did some silk ribbon embroidery for flowers/grass at the base. It's nice to have a supply of "mini gifts" for friends, roommates etc. or for various exchanges. Lace makes friends wherever it goes, so make sure yours does some traveling! I'm on a roll here: 5. Make a quilt with a different lace motif on each quilt square. 6. Same as above but make the squares into a patchwork jacket or vest. 7. Put motifs, with lace tendrils or scrolls between them, around the hem of a skirt. [lace] Bushfire Quilt project
For those lacemakers who are also patchwork/quilters, an American who lives in Australia has started a Bushfire Quilt project to make quilts for people who have lost everything in the fires. She has her local quilt group ready to help make up the quilts; I suspect that the response she gets might be better than she hopes so perhaps other Australian quilt groups will help, too. The address for her blog is http://campfollowerbags.blogspot.com/2009/02/bushfire-quilt-project.html and the address direct to the Flickr group with most of the details is http://www.flickr.com/groups/bushfirequiltproject/ She is asking for 12 1/2" quilt blocks (so when they are seamed together they will be 12" each), especially maverickstars, on a cream or white background. There is a tutorial for these on http://quiltville.com/maverickstars.shtml (except you need to start with 4 1/2" squares not 2 1/2" ones). However, people have offered patchwork fabrics from their stashes, other UFO 12 1/2" squares that they have already made but not got around to using, and someone even offered a couple of UFO quilt tops that need making up into finished quilts. Another American is sending the fabric for quilt backs. All this has been gratefully accepted. As we hope that there are no lace makers involved this time, I thought that perhaps if you have the time to make a block or two to send this would be a more personal way, instead or as well as financial donations, to help those people who have suffered in this disaster, which it is now thought is not entirely a natural one.
