[lace] Edinburgh Lace Club Friendship Day

2009-10-15 Thread Julian Jefferson
I do not know whether this has been posted on Arachne as I been off
piste as they say for a while. Saturday 17th October 2009 is
Edinburgh's Lace Club's Friendship Day at St Anne's Parish Church
Hall, Kaimes Road, Corstorphine 10am - 4pm. Tickets are only £3.00 and
as the name suggests it is a friendly opportunity to go and share your
love of lace making with a great bunch of people. The best thing is
that you have an excuse to sit down all day on Saturday and make lace
- legitimately!!!
I am sorry that I cannot make it to Edinburgh but I wish them all the
best.

Re: [lace] Alexandra Palace

2009-10-15 Thread Carol

Hi Jacquie and Sue, et al,

Your threads (both metaphorical and physical ..) made me smile!I have
quite a stash of Oliver Twists, but also quite a few of the late Mr Piper's
silks in beautiful colours. He was a lovely man, and he used to let me
have 'left-over' reels of coloured silks when my Mother was
hand-embroidering pictures, so I have quite a lot which I feel are far too
wonderful to use. The polythene packets are a good idea to keep them dry
and clean, though!

Sue said Went to the Ally Pally on Sunday to the Knitting and Stitching
Show and Oliver Twists Threads were there , so guess who is sitting here
drooling over the beautiful coloured silk threads and wondering what to do
first, what a dilemma.

Are you supposed to *do* something with them

Most people seem to keep them in their little colour-range packets. They
are much easier to drool over that way and they don't get damp! VBG

Re: [lace] Alexandra Palace -silk threads

2009-10-15 Thread Sue Babbs
Drooling and dreaming over the wonderful colours are therapeutic in
themselves!

I have just bought some of Bart Francis' blue silks, and haven't a clue
what to do with them, but the blues against the gold are just so beautiful.

[lace-chat] Chestnut adventure

2009-10-15 Thread Jane Viking Swanson
Hi All, DH got a bunch of edible chestnuts a couple weeks ago. THe spiny
pods opened up to reveal the brown nuts. Then he broke some open and has
been eating the raw ones and giving me some.

A couple days ago I tried roasting a bunch of them, hence the adventure. I
poked the holes with a fork and put them in the oven as suggested by Joy of
Cooking. I started with 15 minutes and should have left it at that! About
a quarter of them burst!! And of course the bits burnt in the oven so I was
waving a towel and put the fan in the window to get the smoke out. (We have
VERY loud smoke detectors!!)

I ate some of the roasted ones and I still don't like them very much. They
are so mealy in texture. DH is still eating them. I do like the delicate
flavor but I had expected something crunchy.

How are they put into stuffing? Any chestnut suggestions from anyone?

yellow and glowing orange!
