[lace] lace enquiry

2010-05-11 Thread Celia Mulhearn
I received this email yesterday and was wondering what 'the Lacelist'
suggests regarding the enquiry. (I think from someone in the
london area uk)
"/I have an cotton appliqué tablecloth with lace trim both centrally and
at the corners. After the last wash I noticed that the lace - which is
still very much in place has a few holes where the web/linking strands
have become detached. One corner is still complete so it is a template
to know where these strands should go. Two corners are very minor damage
- one has several strands broken . the central lace has very minor
damage. Do you know anyone who would be willing to tackle this repair
for me and to check the rest on the lace to ensure it is OK? I believe
it is the open ?Buckingham (handkerchief corner style only not as
fine) lace rather than fine bobbin lace. For those who know what they
are doing I don't think it would be too difficult, but for me it could
take days and still not look a bodge./

/ //Many thanks for reading this far!"
/
I think perhaps a photo would make decisions easier but also feel it's
not something I could do.. any ideas???

Many Thanks
Celia Mulhearn in chilly but sunny SE18 not far from Greenwich UK

[lace] Motorcyclist

2010-05-11 Thread Clive & Betty Rice
I envy the youth of lacemakers who ride motorcycles! Woe is me! I rode a
Honda back in the 1960s and 1970s when my late first husband rode a Harley. But
that was before I learned lacemaking except crochet. Oh to be young again...

Hi Sue and everyone

oh wow, I have just investigate, thank you for taking the trouble to post
this, Sue - the portrait, even in the clipping, is excellent, though yes her
visage seems overwhelmed by the lace.
Here is a link to the webshots:

and here is a link to the article with a clearer image, but just of the head

A google for Florence Nightingale brings up a younger photo, used at many
sites, where she is wearing some sort of lace-trimmed cap.

[lace] Re: Tatting bikers

2010-05-11 Thread Mark Myers
Hi Karen!!!
I am a biker as well. But not motorized bike. :-D I am a cyclist. And I
guess I would be termed a "tatting cyclist" since I much prefer to ride my
bike than in a car. Don't own a motorcycle, though I toy with the idea, but
wife won't hear of it. So I go around town or country on my bike with
helmet on and use proper biking etiquette and all that. I guess I need to
make up a bicycle pattern. Has to be a Trek, Mongoose or Schwinn ;)

I got the chance to meet Karen roaring in on her Harley at the Palmetto Tat
Days back in 2005(?). Coolest thing I ever saw! And what a way to travel!
It would take me quite a few days to get to conventions if I came in on my
bike LOL!!!

[lace] Re: Tatting bikers

2010-05-11 Thread Karen Bovard
Hi Sherry and other lacemakers,

Actually I prefer the term 'Tatting Motorcyclist' instead of 'Biker'.
No, I do not wear black leather...I prefer bright colored apparell to be seen.
And I always wear my helmet if the law tells me I have to or not.  That is a
brief intro to the difference (to me) of a biker versus a motorcyclist.

Yes, I do tat and needlelace and motorcycle and teach and every so often I get
to put two of my passions together.

My first solo motorcycling/ lace experience was the NJ IOLI Convention.  My
husband and kids  bailed on a family motorcycle/camping vacation and so I
decided I NEEDED a motorcycle trip and at the last minute decided to go.
Since then I have motorcycled 3 times to the Palmetto Lace In in SC from
Nebraska where I live, once to the IOLI Convention in Denver, and to several
national needlework shows where I taught.

Yes, I did tat a motorcycle.  I did it probably 15 plus years ago.  It is
all tatted in components and then stitched onto a piece of cloth backing.  As
many of you who know me know, I love 'advanced tatting techniques' and the
motorcycle was for me to prove to myself that I could use techniques to create
a unique tatted piece.  I have been asked  to on several occasions for the
pattern.  Well---'If' I actually get around to writing up the pattern it, will
probably look different than it does now.  The motorcycle I patterned my
tatted piece off of is a Triumph model (not very popular).  If I do write a
pattern it will 'have' to look like a Harley.  That is what 98% of people
want.

Right now I am diligently working on a 'Fun With Split Rings' book.  I have
way too many patterns for one book and just keep coming up with more.

Oh, so near Devon, where you can get luscious silk sari's and delicious foods
from India and also Jewish cuisine!  I always try to shop/eat when I go to
Chicago!  Fun Fun!  Of course it pales to India, but those in the US enjoy
it!  (sorry, didn't know if Sulochona is on chat.)

Are there threads for bobbin lace on Devon, as I hadn't thought of it before .

Best,

Re: [lace] Lace Magazine

2010-05-11 Thread Brenda Paternoster
That sounds like a delay between the mailing house sending out the magazines
and the Royal Mail in the Poole area. Mine arrived n Medway last week.

I know that my Kent Family History Society journal which is despatched from
Kent usually arrives to UK members after the overseas members gat theirs
because the overseas ones go airmail (the reason for the higher fees ) but the
UK ones go by bulk mailing which is really third class.
