[lace] Books on demand

2010-06-23 Thread Alex Stillwell
Dear Arachnids

I have been planning to reprint my torchon book and following the letters
about Books on Demand I traced one of the machines to Blackwells, 100 Charing
Cross Rad, London, UK and went to visit them. The operator was very helpful
and I am tentatively thinking about using them to reprint my book. If there
are any current or budding lace authors out there I would be happy to share my
experiences.

Keep lacemaking

[lace] Bangles

2010-06-23 Thread Jean Nathan
I actually bought a group of 14 70mm bangles in Sainsburys supermarket for
GBP3.00.

1 is quite thick and bound with coloured and gold thread cloth - have to
think if that would be useable.

2 are bound with thread - one black, one white.

All the rest have fancy cut decoration around the outside, which could be
tricky with the thread going around the rim, but would look very attractive
when the bangle is finished:

2 black

2 burgundy

2 silver and gold

2 silver

3 gold

They had some more, which didn't look any different to me, but they were GBP
8.00.

Re: [lace] Bangle sizes

2010-06-23 Thread Eve Morton
I was also on the Craft Fairs sub-committee with Jane and I still have
part of one of those packs of bangles from Claire's, it was a bargain as
it contained 50 bangles. It was a long time ago now.

Unfortunately Roseground seem to be currently out of stock on the
bangles that they sell.

When I was finding bangles for the workshop that the patterns were
originally designed for I found bangles in Claire's Accessories, Primark
and also in the market down Poole High Street on a hair accessory stall.
I'm sure that other markets will have them too if they sell such things
as cheap jewellery. As Jane says if you are near to Asian shops they
should be available there too.

I think when I was on The Lace Guild's craft
fairs sub-committee and we did the Five Gold Rings pattern pack, I
bought packs of ?15 bangles from Claires (a fashion accessory shop in
the UK) much cheaper than I would have been able to get them through the
lace suppliers, which was how we managed to do the pattern packs within
a very tight budget. This is going back a few years, though.

I am still quietly laughing at myself and thought maybe all of you also need
a giggle. When the link was originally posted about the patterns, I looked
quickly and thought how on earth can a profit be made if the patterns had to
be posted to South Africa. Only when the discussion on the downloading
started, did the penny drop and I am still laughing at my lack of computer
savvy!!! In South Africa we have a saying - Ugly is nothing but stupid!!!

2010-06-23 Thread Carol

Hi All,

One of my students has just bought some lovely Indian bangles - they are a
bit too ornate to wear, but she has made somne of the decorations inside
them, and the intricate decorating on the outside of the bangles really does
look good with the threads she has used. So - try some of the Indian shops
you may have in your locality, as you may be able to snap up some lovely
items.

These tend to be available and cheaper in fashion accessory shops and on
market stalls - I used to buy them in ones and twos from Springetts when
they were general suppliers, at something like 12p each, then went to get
my daughter fitted out with school trousers and found our friendly Indian
shop owner (who always bemoaned the fact that doing her degree in art
stopped her from learning the traditional embroidery skills from her
mother - she just didn't have time) was selling them in bulk packs, much
cheaper! I think when I was on The Lace Guild's craft fairs sub-committee

Generally the bangles come in two sizes - the 70mm diameter size are far
more common than the smaller ones, but you may find packs with both sizes
in. It depends whether you want to do one bangle or ten, and whether you
have time to go and hunt round the shops. (Or get a friendly teenager to
look for you - they will be in the shops they tend to go in!).

2010-06-23 Thread Susan Reishus
Bangles are still quite popular, esp. for younger girls/women, so try places
that cater to them.  Here we have Wet Seal, Hot Topic, and even places like
NYC, but I cannot name them all.

I have also seen them at Target, Claires, Icing (affiliated store catering to
more mature customer.)

If you live in an area that has markets with a cultural focus from food to
gift items, Indian or many Middle Eastern places may have them too.

You can also hit Google, but shipping applies, so perhaps someone would want
to share a package of quantity as perhaps FireMountainGems.com may have.  A
search shows they are available on Amazon, Buy.com, Overstock has some, and
often their shipping is $1.

HTH,

Oh, and don't forget thrift shops including the Salvation Army, and discount
stores like Savers, Marshall's, TJ Maxx, etc.

Apologies store brands aren't in your country or area.

Re: [lace] Re: New question - Pressing or Starching/Sizing

2010-06-23 Thread Susan Reishus
I have been on lists for more than a decade, and don't find most of the
repetition boring.  Often someone new to a list or the technique provides a
new or helpful perspective or innovation, which I really enjoy.  I can also
appreciate their thrill at learning new things and love in being creative.
There is always something good to glean and risking sharing, only limits
knowledge and good will. And there is the delete button.  smile
Susan Reishus
This is true, but sometimes it's nice for new people to have the fun of
discussing something themselves on the list. No one has to reply if they are
tired of the topic or for any other reason. That might also be a timely
reminder. ;-) Sr. Claire

[lace] Lacemakers in Arizona

2010-06-23 Thread Alan Sheila Brown
This is a plea for help. We in Sawbridgeworth have a lacemaker who is
returning to the USA to join family. She is moving to Mesa, Arizona and
would like to keep her lace going. But she needs to have people to
encourage her -don't we all!So we thought that the spider's web
could help in this. If there any lacemakers in the state or a
reasonable distance from there, could you please let us know via
myself. Any info will then be passed on to her before she goes and
will be a nice surprise - we hope.
Thanks in advance from a very warm Sawbo' where it is too sticky to
make lace! Long may it last.

I didn't spot any lacemakers in Arizona on the map but do know there is an
active lace guild over there as one of our members from Illinois joined a
guild. I believe it was the Lacey Ladies of Arizona. There is one lady listed
in the IOLI directory and I will forward your email to her and hope she
contacts you.

2010-06-23 Thread jeanette
Oh, I really loved the cartoon. There was a programme on TV about the
vuvuzela and the vuvuzela was invented in China in 2002 already and the
factory is making millions of vuvuzelas to sell for the Olympic Games in
England in 2012!! They did not say if the name Vuvuzela is also from
China!! And here we were all thinking it was from Africa!!

It is interesting that until recently I had never heard of Vuvuzelas.
Through Facebook, I came across the music for Vuvuzela Concerto in Bb.
Now they're appearing on chat, and numerous FB postings. They seem to be
rather insipid!
