[lace] Hand-made lace on ebay - no chance

2010-12-06 Thread Jean Nathan
A City and Guilds lacemaker is offering Goth hand-made lace gloves with an
opening bid required of £250. Don't think she stands any chance of selling
them, even though, as she says, they took 80 hours of work, are ridiculously
expensive and totally exclusive.

Very brave to base her price on hours spent in making them, but don't think
that will persuade anyone to buy - they'll just see the price. We all know
you can't make a living out of lacemaking unless you get a very special
commission.

Re: [lace] Christmas Exchange

2010-12-06 Thread Sue
Mine went into the post a week ago, but due to the difficult weather
conditions and transportation disruptions over in the UK this week I can see
mail piling up and maybe not getting where they should be going as normal.
Hopefully it will be a temporary blip, but please can everyone take that
into account, it might also be a problem with delays of mail coming into the
UK and then being distributed around so we might all have to be a little
more patient.

When I looked at the pictures (one of finished glove, one work in progress
and 3 of other things), I thought perhaps the £250 included a skull,
gravestone and a very nice stone angel.

Actually, I think the angel IS worth £250.

Malvary in Ottawa where we have some snow (not as much as UK), but we can
cope better.

The gloves (glovettes?) are beautifulI but hardly worth the price, and aren't
particularly complex, I made something similar in tondèr a while back.

I believe that particular angel is part of the statuary at highgate cemetery in
London :-)

Re: [lace] Hand-made lace on ebay - no chance

2010-12-06 Thread Carol

Hi All,

I have just looked at the gloves, and love them!I'd certainly wear
them - somewhere! - but as they are so expensive, maybe one of the gold,
Indian hand embellishments could be used as a pattern, to design my own
A project for the Christmas holiday perhaps, or maybe it would be quicker
and cheaper to glance at the 'Power of Hands'website.

But I also think that Abby from NCIS would look great in them - although I
was not too impressed with the skeleton phalanges on which a glove was
photographed, one of the photographs.

[lace] goth gloves bobbin ID tables

2010-12-06 Thread hottleco
Hello All! WOW--issue #218 is surely jam packed with goodies. Thank you so
much. Loved the goth gloves there are obviously a number of NCIS fans on
this list! Abby needs those gloves to complement her black Battenburg parasol
that has been featured in several episodes. The painted Russian bobbins
reminded me of the nesting dolls. What a charming pillow they would make for a
demo. Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Palm Beach Gardens, Fla

Just an idea, the seller probably knows about wood-turning for
furniture, but not about bobbin turning ?
I did a quick google for Jenny Lind wood-turning style, to see that
there are links for furniture about it.

[lace-chat] Victorian Farm

2010-12-06 Thread Malvary J Cole
I just noticed that Victorian Farm will be shown on TV Ontario at 7:00 this
evening (Monday), for anyone in Ontario.

My students arrive while it is on, so I always tape it to watch later. Have
just finished the series Museum of Life which was about the British Natural
History Museum. Need to go there next time in London - no lace, but lots of
other interesting stuff.
