It's perhaps of the cold. The poor packages must drink very often hot tea or something like this and meanwhile they forgot what they shall do ;- Ilske - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Big postal delays to the USA
Alas, the UK postal system has many problems that we are led to believe come from 9/11. However, any thinking person will blame bureaucracy, strikes, and such. I thought it might be interesting to compare the experience of Jean and Clay with a very large envelope, containing a 2011 Halas lace calendar, that my friend mailed from Budapest. She mailed it at the post office on December 10, and it was delivered to me on the 24th. In perfect condition. However, Ilona (in her eighties) went to stand in the post office line at 9 am, quit and went home for lunch, returned and stood in line until 4 pm - just to get her Christmas mail out. I do think what happens in western countries, where postage rates have been raised to unreasonable levels, is worse. We need to scream at elected officials about inefficiency. Our few lace suppliers have difficulty getting orders filled, while ships are unloading huge cargoes of poor quality goods from China at our ports.. The excuse of 9/11 is shabby. It no longer makes any sense. Like many other inconveniences, we need to write letters to those who can mandate efficiency and lower the salaries of high-level postal officials..(That would be a dream, wouldn't it?) RE: [lace] Big postal delays to the USA
Wow, what does a posh bag bobbin bag look like...I have to make myself a bobbin roll or something to store my good bobbins in. I am not surprised about the issues with US customs...they love to get carried away, but that doesn't stop me from wanting stuff from England...I love just about anything English!! (especially jelly babies and Cadbury chocolate) oh and raspberries (the gummy candy with the red and black candy sprinkle coating) Nothing better made than a good English umbrella. ...sorry for being slightly OT...but my favorite things from England are the lace things. I want terribly a good sized bolster pillow stuffed with Barley straw or sea grass. Barley straw is literally nonexistent in the US. I also want to start collecting Buck's thumpers from Ebay...usually it is the English EBay that has them listed...I just have to careful to check whether the seller is willing to ship worldwide or not. I got a Posh bags bobbin bag for her at Southern Counties Lacemakers Fair and posted it airmail on 23rd November. It was delivered to her today. Needless to say we were both in a state of anguish over what had happened to it. I posted 4 parcels together, of which 3 were to Florida - one of those was delivered on 23rd December and the other two are still in the wind somewhere. I'd got the forms downloaded to report missing mail ready to send as soon as Royal Mail starts working again on Wednesday. Royal Mail are saying that, because of increased US security, post is being delayed by about a week as they can no longer send mail on passenger flights and are having to find space on cargo flights, as well as increased customs checks when the post finally arrives in the US. At the moment no parcels can be tracked. We've also had two small book packages returned by Royal Mail to Amazon as undeliverable - no attempt to deliver has been made. Our postie said there are thousands of Amazon parcels in the local sorting office waiting to be attended to. Reckon they decided it would be quicker to clear the backlog around the country by sending whole consignments back to Amazon. So if you've got packages already in the system bound for the US, then you need patience - a lot of it. And if you're planning to send something, it might be a good idea to wait until the end of January in the hope that they will have cleared the backlog and things will move a bit quicker. Re: [lace] Big postal delays to the USA
Hi Cearbhael, The Post Bag, essentially, looks a bit like an old fashioned ditty bag used by men for many years... only theirs were made of leather and very stiff and hard. The shape is much like a shoe box! A zipper goes through the center of the box from the bottom of one end to the bottom of the other. So... it's split wide open along the length of the box. Inside are the most elegantly constructed pockets for many, many pairs of bobbins. That's enough to give you an idea of how elegant the design is, and on top of that, she uses lovely fabrics so each is a work of art. My bag will easily hold 96 pairs of bobbins. A smaller bag is made for 48 pairs. In fact, I believe that I could stuff more bobbins in the bag - or at the very least some of my favorite tools or bobbin holders. One of the reasons that Jean volunteered to get the bag for me and send it to me is that the person who makes them does not send orders outside the UK. And I have to admit that Jean and I go way back on Arachne, and I'm very fortunate that she agreed to do this for me. Cearbhael said: ..I just have to careful to check whether the seller is willing to ship worldwide or not. For anyone in the USA winning something from Australia on ebay, I was informed at the local post office last week that there is now a $9 Australian surcharge for customs inspection on all packages being sent to the USA, imposed by the Americans, don't know if other countries have to collect it as well, so anything you win will have that added to your cost. So no more sending pressies to my American friends and rellies on general principle.
