Re: [lace] Bucks Booklet.
Mine arrived this week also - again very promptly (as I was dilatory ordering it!) The patterns are truly beautiful. If you make point ground, you will want a copy of this. http://www.jeanleader.co.uk/publications/floralbuckspoint.html Sue (a very satisfied customer, in Northfield, Illinois, where the thunderstorm rumbles on) sueba...@comcast.net - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. RE: [lace] Bucks Booklet.
Hi Jean, Claire and all, I received mine too, what a lovely book, don't know where to start but must do my dragon first (thanks for the loan of Lace Express Jacquie). Claire I suspect you are awake at 3.30 still wondering which pattern to do first. I wonder if anyone out there can help me. I have an old snail mail address for Pam Nottingham and would like to confirm that Pam is still at the same place as I would like to contact her. [lace] Artefact of the Month
In message 58A225F1CC0B45DF90F072ED12CB0721@personal, cearbh...@mywdo.com writes Dang I get so confused between the guilds. I really should join but which one would be best for me. I hear about the UK Lace Guild and then International Old Lacers...what is the difference...what to join...and what is this program? Cearbhael I can't advise you which to join as my answer would be somewhat biased! (I'm on the Exec). I would suggest you look at the websites for both organisations and make your decision from there as to which - or maybe whether both - would be appropriate for you to join. The Artefact of the Month Club is basically a means of The Lace Guild sending a photo of one of the items in their museum collection by email with those who wish to receive them each month, with a brief description of the item concerned. Mostly these are of pieces of lace from the collection, but some may be of lace tools and other items of lace interest. You don't have to be a member of The Lace Guild to join the Artefact of the Month Club - just send an email asking to join, including your email address to off...@laceguild.org and you will be added to the list. There is no charge for this service. It is important that you don't forward these photos to anyone else - ask them to register on their own behalf. This is because the Guild keeps a record of the number of people viewing the artefacts and this is used as evidence of interest for applications for funding, etc. -- Jane Partridge - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. RE: [lace] Artefact of the Month
Short answer: Both if you can. If not both -- the one that is in your country (closest country) to support it. If we don't build for our future generations, they might lose out. I never learned German because the older generation used it as a way to talk without the children understanding. But to be bilingual, in this age, is such an asset to life. [lace] need help with an old pattern
A long time ago I made a little oval mat, and I would like to make it again. However, this was so long ago that I have forgotten some of the suggestions and directions, having neglected to write them down on the back of the old pricking I intend to use. The pattern was printed in Die Spitze, Vol. 1 2003. Does anyone still have that copy? I don't need the pricking itself, but if there are directions or special instructions it would be very helpful to have them to refer to. My German is not good at all, so if someone who has the magazine and can help with translation, that would be helpful as well. I know I am asking a lot, but Arachne never fails, so I am sure that someone out there can help. Thank you very much in advance. [lace] International Old Lacers/Artefact of the Month
Dang I get so confused between the guilds. I really should join but which one would be best for me. I hear about the UK Lace Guild and then International Old Lacers...what is the difference...what to join...and what is this program? Cearbhael, I believe you live in the US. The International Old Lacers is the US group. The Lace Guild is the English group. The website is _http://www.internationaloldlacers.org/_ (http://www.internationaloldlacers.org/) Membership in the International Old Lacers brings several benefits. There is a magazine that appears four times a year, frequently with articles written by yours truly :-) The magazine, called The Bulletin is informative about lace events, exhibits, classes, contests etc. that are occurring in the US. It also contains patterns. A directory is published and mailed to all members that would guide you to local groups and fellow lacemakers. The group maintains a rather large library of lace books from which members may borrow. You pay only the very reasonable cost of postage. I have borrowed many books this way. Some I decide to buy eventually myself, others I do not. Since I like to read things about lace history I have read a number of books otherwise very hard to obtain, for very little money. The IOLI has a yearly convention during which attendees take classes, hear lectures on lace related subjects, take trips to places of interest to lacers, see exhibits of lace, and marvel at the entries in the yearly lace contest. Some people feel the highlight of the convention is the sales room. There under a single roof is the most glorious shopping experience of the year for lacemakers, where they can see and handle books, lace equipment and thread. This year's convention is in Bethesda, MD, which is a suburb of Washington, DC. There will be trips to the Smithsonian, the Library of Congress, and the Baltimore Museum of Art where the famous lace collection of the Cone Sisters is held. It is not necessary to be a member of the International Old Lacers to join a local chapter or to attend the convention, but the Bulletin and the Directory are good sources of information about what is available. Unfortunately, the IOLI does not have an Artefact of the Month, which sounds like fun. However it has the Lace Round Table where people are encouraged to provide pictures of laces that they would like to have commented upon and discussed by the membership. Some people have submitted such laces when they did not know what they had, and have had some good consultation on them. The above website can be consulted for membership forms, a link to the convention, and other things of interest. [lace] Black thread vs. white thread
The computer is back! And I have returned from the Costume Society of America's symposium, where I brushed up on textile conservation, to be sure there were no new developments that could affect lace. Our newbies may not know that in the process of dyeing thread, white is the fluffiest. The thread becomes progressively thinner depending on how much dye is absorbed by the fibers. Pastels are just slightly affected. By the time you have dyed thread the darkest, the thread can sometimes be seen (by eye) to be thinner! To clearly illustrate this, look at threads available everywhere from DMC: the 6 strands of embroidery floss. Compare a skein of black to white. To get equal coverage to white, sometimes it is necessary to add an extra strand of black floss to your needle! This is also true of the wools used in needlepoint. Not relevant to lace, but you should know something this basic. It could affect an expensive lace knitting project! With lace threads, the best way to determine a size is appropriate is, as everyone has said, to make a small lace sample to see if the pricking needs to be slightly reduced for black thread. If crocheting or knitting lace, you must make allowance for this anomaly. Each fiber - cotton, linen, silk, wool, synthetic - will absorb dye at a different rate. [lace] Jean's Floral Bucks Book
David wrote: Dear Jean, your Floral Bucks Point book arrived here safe and sound today, and what a feast for the eyes. These pieces are exactly the type I love so much. I have another few days left on my current piece of Chantilly and then it will be on to those gorgeous poppies. I got my copy on Tuesday. I used my DH's Paypal account so it came addressed to him. I wonder if Jean thought we had yet another guy making lace. :-) No chance, although I did teach my DS to make 3 small pieces of lace while she was visiting from the UK. Hey David, when you start the poppies piece, can you send us updates with photos, especially one of the finished lace that we can put with the book. There are so many wonderful pieces in the small book and I will definitely be using it for show and tell during the beginning bucks class I am teaching in July. [lace] which Guild to join
I really should join but which one... Be greedy like me Cearbhael, and join both!!! You do Not have to be a member of UK Guild to receive the Artefact of the Month photo. Just write to them at holl...@laceguild.org and ask to be put on the list for the Artefact of the Month club. Maybe there is somewhere to click on in their web site. They send the photo each month automatically, and there are some beaut pieces in the collection. I have a nicely growing folder of these photos, and they make a nice virtual collection!
