Not to change a custom, but the comment made me think of
French Lace Cookies, which are easy to make and keep, and very delicious!

If I remember well, Craponnes was originally famed locally for its
metallic laces . what is called Craponnes today is dentelle du Puy with
flowery patterns . it's fun to make .

a website about Craponnes . it's in French but the pictures are lovely .

Subject: [lace] St. Catherine, our Patron Saint - for Newbies

Dear
Newbies,

We have written extensively through the years about St. Catherine,
the
patron saint of lacemakers, whose day is next Friday, November 25th.
There
are local lace guilds who use this day as a special time for a
gathering of
lacemakers.  The English custom is to serve Cattern  Cakes.
This year, the
25th is the day after the American  Thanksgiving.  This is a
time when
correspondence on Arachne drops to  almost nothing, while our busy
women are
preparing family feasts or traveling to  be with loved ones.
Therefore, (for the
time - next weekend - when you are  not receiving much
mail) I am giving
you the address where you can read all  about St. Catherine
and the cake
served in her memory:
_http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html_
(http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html)

At this site,
search for:
1. St. Catherine's Day
2. Cattern Cake

If long-time members of
Arachne are celebrating St. Catherine, please
share what kind of program you
have planned or memories of this day, so our
newbies may learn more about
this old custom that we are dedicated to  keeping.

[lace] [LACE] pattern sharing helpful hint.

2011-11-20 Thread Donna Fousek
Hi All,

I know we all like to share or download free patterns over the
internet. I have noticed that they do not always come across to the scale
sent. I have an idea that might help stop the madness. I began putting a 1
inch scale line on the pricking before sending so the recipient can tell if
the pricking is to scale after printing. Thread size is great but not all off
are experienced enough to tell if the scaling is correct. Just my thoughts I
thought I would pass on.

Re: [lace] St. Catherine, our Patron Saint

2011-11-20 Thread lacelady
I will be lacing Friday, also. I am scheduled with a five hour shift at the
Holiday Market. Most of the time I'm free to make lace. I'll be doing a
Christmas ornament...my last one. When it's done, I'll go back to my other
projects. There will be many hours of lacemaking at the Holiday Market for the
rest of this year so I'll be able to do more than one project.

We will mention St. Catherine's Day at our lace meeting on Saturday. No
cookies, though, since no food is allowed in that meeting room. We will go out
to lunch together after the meeting.

Alice in Oregon... where DH and I will spend a quiet Thanksgiving before
resuming our busy lives. The weather is supposed to be nasty so staying
indoors is an inviting prospect.

[lace] pattern sharing helpful hint.

2011-11-20 Thread Jane Partridge
This is helpful with anything that is critical as to size. As some
printers and copiers distort by different amounts horizontally and
vertically, may I suggest that the one inch lines are shown in both
directions?
