[lace] LED lighting
Before I went away on my recent trip I asked about LED lighting in relation to lacemaking with a view to possibly changing some of our lighting in our home and maybe for our trailer caravan. We went to a Motorhome show and rally and there i got graphic first hand knowledge of the difference it might make. We bought a couple of strip lights to replace the caravan ones and changed just one of them (something to do with the way the electrics worked, but the light from just this one lamp made a huge difference to the visual difference in the caravan. Amazing and for once I said WOW, :-) So I think some investment in those bulbs will happen in our household over the coming months. Thank you all for the input then, no need to restart necessarily but thought you might like my feedback. Re: [lace] Intro to Milanese
Regarding the Lace Guild's Milanese Lace book, Janice asked: > Is there anything more in this book than is in both Milanese books by Pat > Read? > I am lucky to own both books with braids but always looking for more. It's a reprint of the four articles by Pat from the Guild's magazine 'Lace', plus another one or two patterns. If you have your back issues of 'Lace' then there's not a lot new in it for you, but for people who weren't Lace Guild members back then it is a bargain. Jacquie in Lincolnshire. [lace] competition pieces
Hello All! I was quite interested in Clay's comment about work submitted for an IOLI lace competition. While I can't speak to organizational efforts at all embroidery groups, the Stan Hywet Stitchery Showcase held in west Akron, OH has three categories for each section that is judged. Not only are the quilts separated from the counted work, surface embroidery etc., they are also labeled as: original work by the stitcher/designer (period!!!), adaptation (stitcher tweaked someone else's design) & commercial pattern (project is worked to the pattern/materials list of the designer). Just wondered if this type of set up would have clarified the entry? Allowing each submission to be judged within its peer group is in everyone's best interest. No stitcher or lacemaker wants to embarrass herself/himself or the organization hosting the competition. Good news travels fast, bad news faster. A good competition that gets a bad reputation can wind up in a deep rut. Re: Fw: [lace] Protection of intellectual property
Hello all, After a busy weekend in lace meetings, I want to share with you more complaints of some happenings in my country. Instead of repeating all my words, I hope you don't mind to have a look at an article I have written in my blog. Thank you very much. http://mi-pequeno-taller-eng.blogspot.com.es/ Best wishes from Antje, in a stormy Spain (stormy weather, I mean, not just copying problems!) [lace] Milanese Lace
Hello, A friend let me borrow some hand outs from a Milanese lace class taught by Louise Colgan. They had great diagrams and instruction. I know there is a DVD of her instruction http://www.henselproductions.com/milanese.html She's teaching a IOLI this year and I'm so excited to take her class! Hope that helps, Robin -- Never, ever, let anyone tell you what you can and can't do. Prove the cynics wrong. Pity them for they have no imagination. The sky's the limit. *Your* sky. *Your *limit. [lace] Looking for Frank Newborn
Years ago I put a picture on my website for some of the tatting shuttles I had collected over the years at that time. One of the shuttle was silver and was made by Frank Newborn. This shuttle had his mark on it and the silver markings for England. Anyhow...I guess Frank didn't make too many of these shuttles and was given only to a few people. So he had sent me an email from my website (my email address is on the home page) asking me how I enquired the shuttle over here in New York, USA from England. I had told him I found it and got it from an antique dealer. He then sent to me a silver bobbin that he made along with the info on the markings of silver in England. I have kept that letter he sent to me by snail mail and the bobbin. His original email he sent to me I can't find...so I am wondering if I lost it years ago my Hal my old computer died around 2002 or there abouts. I spent alot of time seeing if I could hunt it down since some of my old email I did keep back when...but can't find it. I would like to contact him if anybody can help me. He must deal with silver. I also remember seeing im in a old tatting booklet too...I believe in it he mentioned he had also made his daughter a shuttle too. My lace group on hearing me tell my story at our last meeting thought it would make a great show and tell ...but I can't find the email. I would like to be able to contact him. Thank you in advance to anyone that can help me. [lace] Intellectual property
I have to say that the modern world we live in, that seems not to give a fig about intellectual property is a great concern. "Stealing" seems to have taken on a different meaning to many. I oft-times make model airplanes (RC models) and the convention that we appear to have taken on is that a pattern/plan in a magazine that you buy, you may use it to make one "of it" for you own personal use or pleasure; that seems fair to me. Certainly not pass it around and definitely not sell it. Then comes the issue of on line publication of a magazine to which you have contributed, without your permission. You then lose control of your work completely. However the on line publisher can make it more difficult (even impossible for the ordinary user of the internet) by disabling the copy function on the web. Currently I am heavy into ukulele playing (a little jazz trio) and I am often looking for printed lyrics / printed music, to download. There are plenty in my genre that offer out of copyright stuff for free, but I occasionally come across a site that will not enable me to download the song... that too is fair in my opinion. May I suggest that Antje, request the magazine publishers to disable the copy function for their patterns when they publish it on the web, their IT people will certainly know how to do that. I don’t know how they do it.. but they can and do when it suits them. Brian From Brian and Jean Lemin Cooranbong. Re: [lace] Intellectual property
Hi Brian, I am sad to say that even 'copy blocked' websites are not immune to copying. They just make it a little harder, not just a right-mouse-button-click to copy the information. At best. it means that the illegal copy will take a little bit more effort to make and will probably produce a poorer quality image, (i.e. a screen capture and not a PDF or whatever the original file format was). But, it might stop an honest person by making them think a bit. I asked my husband, a senior software architect, if there were any technical options and his answer was, "you're just screwed". That said, we can all try to make a small difference in the world where we can. Say something if you see someone selling an illegal copy - maybe not an attack which will produce defensive response, but something like, 'I know that author/artist/designer spent a lot of time and effort to make that pattern, I think they deserve credit and financial reward for their work. Don't you think so?' I know this approach is somewhat naïve, but I think it is better to try SOMETHING. I have teenagers and I've had talks with them about sharing songs from CDs with their friends. I tell them to buy the songs, not just copy stuff from other people. Especially now when you can easily buy a single song track online... if they need money for this, I can always provide some extra household job for them to do to earn money.
