[lace] floral bucks point patterns
Hi All, If you want Bucks Point patterns with the 'wow' factor, why not look through your back copies of 'Lace'? What do you mean - you're not a member?! This is why we're members ;-) ! Lace 16/27 included a pretty edging from C.C.Channers 'Lacemaking Point Ground' along with an edging from the late Mrs Bullock. There is a super leafy circular mat, somewhat in the Channer style in Lace 18/31 There were a couple of motifs in Lace 19/31 that are described as for a hairbrush back or paperweight. Is it one of these that was mentioned earlier? They are both lovely and the lozenge shaped one is quite unusual. Anne Collier had articles on and patterns of Lace Collars in Lace 23 & 24 There were edgings, insertions and motifs in Lace 8 pp18-19 and the Waterlily edging was published in Lace 19/25. Some of these were re-drawn from Luton Museum patterns. I have photocopies of patterns from the Luton Museum and I believe many have been "trued up" by others but not all of them. I see one deep flounce is labelled 'Miss Pope, somewhere, Headington Hill, Oxford'. A wide insertion is labelled 'Miss Pope, The Grove, Torquay'. I wonder if they have been published anywhere, they would certainly make beautiful and challenging patterns. Lace regularly publishes a "challenge", an old pattern that needs a modern interpretation. Given the popularity of the Channer mat, perhaps something Channeresque from the Lace Guild's archive could be found? (Jacquie?) There are probably many more Bucks Point patterns in Lace, these just happen to be the papers copied in the workbook I'm looking at. Too many patterns, not enough time. [lace] Archives
Actually, I mainly read Arachne via the Bookmark to the Archives on my browser toolbar. It is much easier to do on my tablet than logging into my Hotmail account and wading through the digests. That is also the main reason I don't post very often, because I have to log onto my Hotmail account to reply or post. And yes, message are only saved to the archives if sent to lace@arachne.com Anita Hansen Cedar Rapids, Iowa on a sunny but bitterly cold day! - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. Re: [lace] Salex Dictionary
Hello Alex and everyone The Cassells publication was my lace friend for a long time. I read it like a book, cover to cover when I first got it! Some entries inspired me to try something new - I made a Midlands bolster from its entry. During a library pruning I gave my copy to a newcomer to lace that I knew would appreciate it. At that time it was out-of-print from Cassell's. Alex, I, for one, am glad that you took the initiative and published the reprint yourself! I recommend this dictionary of lace to all lacemakers. [lace] Salex Dictionary
For Americans who order books from Holly Van Sciver: This Alex Stillwell book is listed under book category 14 at: http://www.vansciverbobbinlace.com However, the title of the book on Holly's site has been typed as "Salex Illustrated History" I ordered it in 2011 and it turned out to be a duplicate of an earlier edition of the "Dictionary", and it says "Dictionary" on the photograph of the Salex book.. I told Holly about the typing error at the 2011 IOLI Bethesda convention. Thank you Jeri for pointing this out. The information about repairing lace is exactly the same in both the earlier âCassells Illustrated Dictionary of Lacemakingâ and the current âSalex Illustrated Dictionary of Lacemakingâ. I would not like anyone being misled into buying it again. The reason for the different name is that the first was published by Cassells but they would not reprint so I sel fpublished it. Re: [lace] Torn veil - help needed
I looked at the photos of the veil and in the picture with the coin it is possible to see that the lace is Princess Lace. This should make it easier to find a redundant piece of princess lace to be able to mend the net or make a new flower sprig to cover the tear. Princess lace often seems to turn up in charity shops or suchlike. It is made from fancy tapes. No bobbin lace required. Best wishes for finding a way to repair it. As Jane pointed out, not everyone remembers (or if someone is new to Arachne, doesn't know) where to find the Archives. Would it be possible for our dear moderator, Avital to include it in the footer that appears on each message? Just a thought. [lace] Torn veil
A small hole in a veil, but a world of trouble for an amateur who might try to help. In my experience, when I try to do such a mend, the minute I start to work on such a thing all the surrounding thread disintegrates because it is very old and cannot withstand much handling. Then you are trying to mend a larger hole and have made the item much worse than it was when it was given to you and you feel a moral obligation to continue on with a job where the job is becoming bigger and worse at every moment. Chances are that when you finally come up with a brilliant solution to the larger hole, resulting in a massive investment in time, the bride will be horrified at the appearance of the veil and will feel that you have ruined it. So, you will have spent a lot of time and ingenuity, and you will have a bride who feels that you should reimburse her for the cost of the veil. Sue has rightly concluded that she should not volunteer for this. It is with this thought in mind that I mention that there are some textile conservation laboratories. The one that is well know in NY is the Textile Conservation Laboratory at the Cathedral of the Church of Saint John the Divine where, despite the name, they take in private work. http://www.stjohndivine.org/about/textile-conservation-lab Sue is not here in the NY area, but perhaps she could contact them and ask if they know of a place in her neck of the woods. This will not be cheap. First there will be a charge for evaluating the work needed and when the bride signs the contract she will be acquainted with the idea of holding harmless the lab in the event that the item is impaired during the mending process. When last I checked, probably ten years ago, work at a different lab which has subsequently gone out of business was in the vicinity of over $90 an hour. This will really put the bride to the test of how much value she places on the veil. But, it will be up to her to decide whether she wants to invest a lot of money in the project. One problem with this kind of thing is that the person asking about the mend thinks that a knowledgeable lacemaker can do an invisible mend in about five minutes. If they realized that they were discussing a situation where they are essentially asking a stranger to do a $500 job for them for free, they would be horrified. Re: [lace] Torn veil - help needed
Dear Sue, A friend's granddaughter is getting married in September, and thinking of wearing the Brussels Lace veil, which has been worn by 50 or so brides in the family. So it has been brought out for inspection, and a jagged edge tear discovered in it. I was sent photos today to see what I thought could be done with it, and don't really know what to suggest. I have uploaded these photos to Flickr, and am hoping that someone can give me advice on what to tell them. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lacemaker/sets/72157639451992576/ Oh what a shame. Still, it's there now so let's fix it! I think if it were me, I would first match the thread as best I could. Then make a small pricking of plain point ground of the appropriate size and rework an ample square of it. I would then sew this over the hole securely and finally neatly trim away the torn edges from the underside. Should only take a day or two. Others may have a completely different idea though and I shall look forward to hearing their suggestions. [lace] Arachne archives
Seconding Jeri's point about relevant subject descriptions to facilitate using the archives, may I also ask you to all check you are using the correct email address to send your posts to Arachne. There are two which work, and both will get your contribution to both individual and the digests, but only those posts sent to the correct one get archived. Initially (and for quite a while) I was using the wrong one so none of my early posts are in the archives and all my pearls of wisdom are lost forever. I am not sure where I found the addresses for Arachne originally, probably on google, in which case this wrong address in perpetuity is very similar to The Lace Guild's problem. A google search for that usually brings up our old demon address first, where technically www.laceguild.org is the correct one. But as I understand it, so long as the wrong address is the one that gets all the hits it remains at the top. [lace] Please Change Subjects so We Can Find Memos in Future
Jeri, I am sure you know from your research that matters such as copyright do not stand still, as just occasionally laws are changed and new, more helpful, articles are published. There is not sufficient traffic on Arachne for us to need to cull discussions at the moment, in fact it has been nice to find something to talk about! Not everyone is proficient in spelling, and if your computer/phone cannot bring up the previous message to reply to and you need to enter the subject line separately, sometimes your mind insists that it is something that sounds the same - either that or automatic spell checkers play havoc! Please do not be so pedantic that you send our shy members back into lurkdom. For a quick answer to a question it is usually quicker to ask on the list than to try and remember where the archives are to be found, (the link you give below will soon be deleted or hidden away in a digest or filed emails, as it does not have the subject line "Arachne archives"!) and search through them - not all of us are retired with time on our hands. :-) New discussions on a topic often brings out new opinions, which surely help, rather than hinder, research? If we only discussed items that were new, Arachne conversation would very soon dry up altogether, and we don't want that to happen! On a personal note, for my way of sorting things it would be helpful if people didn't put "lace chat" in the subject line of a message being sent to "lace", and vice versa - this is because I have the lists in separate folders, filtered on those words, so usually when something like "moved to lace chat" appears in the subject line it isn't, it stays in the lace folder! I recognise that not everyone files things the same as me, and I'm not all that bothered by it, I'm just using it as an illustration that there are things on a list like this that we sometimes have to learn to live with, rather than issuing edicts. :-) In message <2a371.50e109ac.3ffb9...@aol.com>, jeria...@aol.com writes It seems a good time to mention that in our archives there are: 662 messages in the file "Copyright" 265 messages in the file "Miss Channer's Mat" 3 messages in the file "Miss Chandler" 499 messages in the file "Alex Stillwell" http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/index.html It is possible to check and see what has already been written, especially on an over-worked subject like "Copyright". -- Jane Partridge - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Burning PDF files onto a CD?
Dear Friends Thank you so much to everyone who has sent me information about this problem and it would appear that I'm not the only one to have encountered this very same frustration. I have a folder which I have named 'My Book' and in that folder are 173 individual pdf files named and numbered 'BOOK PAGE 001, BOOK PAGE 002 etc and up to 009. They then go from BOOK PAGE 010, 011 and on to 099 when of course they change to 100, 101 and so on, all with the prefix of BOOK PAGE. I opened up the 'My Book' folder at 7am this morning and went to the tool bar at the top where it says 'View' and clicked on that. which gave me several options one of which was 'Lists', so I clicked on that. The result was that my PDF files were shown on the page as three files to each line instead of the seven that originally showed. The original page with 7 files per line were all in the correct order on the screen, but the files with only three files per line were out of sequence and in the same order as those I had burnt onto the CD. I have been able to 'drag and drop' those files into their correct position! I must get dressed now and have some breakfast but will set to again this afternoon trying to burn these files from the folder with only three files per line onto a new CD and hopefully this time they will be in the correct order. I won't close this folder with the three files per line, just in case I lose it! Watch this space and wish me luck! Re: [lace] Torn veil - help needed
Oh Sue, what a pity as it's such a beautiful veil! I would suggest that you try to find a similar piece of net to place underneath the hole and carefully stitch it in place, then make a Honiton flower/spray of leaves to echo those already worked, and appliqué/stitch them in position over the repair. You will of course need to work a second spray for the left hand side of the veil so that it balances and make them both curve in an upside down sort of 'U' shape towards the centre of the veil. Good luck and I do hope you are able make it wearable once again.
