Good on you,. Jean . I admire your persistence in making lace, even though your hands make life difficult. I have an Essential Tremor, and therefore don't always get the pin directly in the pin hole - but what-the-heck - who cares?! And if they do - bad luck!! I make lace for my own pleasure, and if others don't like it - that is their loss, not mine!! I know picking up bobbins by their spangles in frowned upon, but if it is the only way you can work - well, go on doing it. Making lace is so much better than Not making lace! [lace] pictures of country stands from OIDFA
Hello, all - I am not sure if this link will allow those without a Facebook account to see these pictures, but it is worth the try.  These pictures from the country stands at OIDFA last month were just posted today: LaceSpace        LaceSpace Prostor za Äipke in vse povezano z njimi. A place for lace and everything connected with them. View on www.facebook.com Preview by Yahoo  I don't know if they got pictures of every country, but it was wonderful to see so many amazing and beautiful displays, even if we can't study the lace close-up in these pictures.  If you don't have a Facebook account and the link doesn't work, there *may* be a way to get them visible, but it would take someone way more familiar with Facebook to be able to help. [lace] Youghal Irish Needle Lace
Hi All, I got my copy of Youghal Irish Needle Lace by Elizabeth Kurella a couple weeks ago and it is fantastic. I want to add my two cents to Jeri's review. I think any needle lacer would love this book. Elizabeth includes many, many graceful designs - flowers, buds, leaves, shamrocks, etc. from large pieces in her collection and others. They are really charming designs and I find many I would like to make in the needle lace techniques I know. She also includes photos of the repeats of the pattern where the lace maker used different stitches in the flower repeats. (I hope that is clear.) I love seeing how the different stitches can change the look of the piece. I always include that in my Battenberg classes. Some of the designs are quite ornate and some are simply elegant. A few remind me of Gros Point with a dazzling array of stitches on each flower. As Jeri mentioned the book also includes a reprint of Irma Osterman's book on Youghal Lace. Irma taught many kinds of needle lace. I was thrilled to learn Point de Gaze from her at the Ithaca lace days. So Elizabeth's book has information on the technique and many, many inspiring designs. So those are my thoughts on Youghal Irish Needle Lace. I am a friend of Elizabeth's but I don't get paid for this review I just want to share the eye candy!! Re: [lace] Some gentle ADMIN reminders
I access my emails through a variety of devices depending on time of day and location. Each device was set up for a particular profile: personal, work etc Last week, I was testing in Germany and reset my iPads to standard because if I replied to an email it came up with my work email, phone number and voice mail, on another iPad it had my personal number and on the third it had my home number. My personal phone used to have my personal phone number and home address in my sign off but when I changed phones a few days ago I forgot that it would go back to the default of 'sent from iPhone'. So, yes, I have to now go and add the right phone number to some of my emails but that isn't a hardship. It is easy to change the standard sign off message on your apple product but because you have to actively go and change it, it is easy to forget to do. Re: [lace] Some gentle ADMIN reminders
Hello Jeri and everyone What you describe is a mobile signature and indicates the person is not at their usual terminal. For those whose usual terminal is their mobile device they might wish to change their sig line in their e-mail settings. Or not...it can be useful to know if the message was sent from a mobile device. Re: [lace] Some gentle ADMIN reminders
Dear Spiders, Avital sent us a very good reminders yesterday. She always makes time of us, even if things on her home front are particularly difficult. Please review item 8 (below). Messages come without a signature, and expecting us to remember to whom their e-mail address is attached! We have over 1,000 subscribers, some of whom are like me - unable to remember everything we once did. It is all some can do to remember what the acronyms for lace groups mean. If we wish to send a private reply, there is no gracious way to say Dear ? Another matter, There are many more messages being "Sent from my iPad" We do not care what equipment is used. It is possible to suppress this iPad promotion, and a way to set up an automatic signature line for yourself. I don't think anyone needs this reminder, but I'll throw it in anyway. A short sig with a few lines about yourself, your location, your blog, etc., is fine. A sig with your 500 favourite inspirational quotes or a detailed ASCII art depiction of the Titanic is not. So please be discrete. [lace] Looking for Hungarian-speaking lacemaker in UK
Dear spiders, I am posting this on behalf of Lauran Sundin. Lauran is NOT on Arachne, so please reply to her directly at i...@lauransundin.com. Thanks, Avital Arachne moderator >>> I have an unusual quest. A lace maker from Hungary would like to come to the Waddesden events. She would like to take my Intro to Wire Bobbin Lace Work shop and attend the Lace Symposium. I am looking for a lace maker who lives in England, speaks Hungarian and would be able to attend. There is some immediacy in this request as the workshop is Sept 10-11-12 and the symposium on the 13th. Re: [lace] My thread confusion
Hi fellow Arachnids, I am afraid that Per Tombolo Filato di Cantu is no longer made. If you want to work in that particular thread, I have still got some white and ecru 30 and 40 in stock -50 was stopped a long time ago- @ £4.60 + P&P. Happy lace making, Joepie -Original Message- From: Sue Sent: Monday, August 25, 2014 11:23 AM To: Arachne Subject: [lace] My thread confusion I want to try out a pattern which I think might work in Finca thread (before I buy more to make one my projects in the coming months). I was quite confident that way back I picked up a spool of it in Hobbie Crafts at the same time as I bought the first block pillow for lace when I knew almost nothing about my new craft I had begun to learn. I hunted through my various boxes yesterday and didn’t find it and checked the last of them this morning. Instead of Finca I found a thread called Filato per tombolo di cantu and looking at the label I think this is the one I bought new and the other two part spools I must have acquired via another lacemaker since, and yes i realise there is always so much more to learn and enjoy now. I know nothing about this thread but looking closer at the labels one say N 30, one N 40 and the other N 50 (am I right to think that is about thickness of thread?) On the ends of the plastic inner tube around which they are wound they all say GR25.Two of them look like white, not brilliant though and the other has a cream/ecru look to it. Having typed this out I have just got out Brendas magic book of threads and have the numbers listed in there and also checked out the Finca threads as well. What would we Lace makers do without this book? Can anyone who has used it advise me of how it works up and also I would love to know the kinds of lace you have used it for, even if you just used it for samples. I currently dont have enough hours in my day to personally try out all these things, so am hoping to benefit a little from the knowledge of you more experienced lace makers out there. [lace] Beginner-intermediate-advanced
I don't fit into any of the three categories. I've been making lace since 1997 and I'm happy with torchon, some Bedfordshire (except leaves), geometric Bucks and Bruges, but I have a problem with finishing and with fine threads because I don't have sufficient feeling and control in my fingers due to rheumatoid arthritis. I've even designed a few pieces and had a couple appear in the UK Lace magazine. Leaves are a problem. I've tried all the methods and will persist if I have to; my fingers don't always behave, but if I really want to I can use a bead instead (thanks for suggesting that Eve). I avoid darning in ends because I aim the needle, but it doesn't necessarily end up where I intend - (mounting on a background fabric means you can pull the threads through to the back of the fabric instead). Lack of sensitivity means I can break a thread while tensioning because I can't feel how much tension I'm applying so fine threads such as used in Honiton are out, but silk is wonderful for tensioning itself and not breaking. I don't worry if a thread breaks, and just run a new thread alongside the broken one. I couldn't handle bobbins without spangles because I use the spangle to pick up the bobbin - there are no lace police so, as it's the only method that works for me, I'll carry on doing it regardless of what others may say. It's either that or not make lace. If I want to make something that uses fine thread, I enlarge the pricking and do it in a thicker thread. Mistakes are "design elements". I'm not going to make heirloom lace or study fine laces in museums and collections. I'm happy with what I do as a hobby. It's the process of making that I like, not the finished item. Although I do admire what many of you do, I don't aspire to do the same because I know and accept my limitations. [lace] Lace question on a quiz show
On the UK TV show 'Tipping Point' on Sunday evening the question in the category labelled 'Hobbies' was "Which of these were the towns of Honiton and Nottingham famous for?" Three options were given. Of those, the answer wanted was lace. I'd hardly call the Honiton and Nottingham lace industries a "hobby"!
