[lace] Re: Help with sewing with thread/Structure of Threads for Lace by Ballantyne
Well of course you have got it in one go. I cant believe how daft I feel. To make it worse I am sure I have heard that before, maybe on Arachne before but not from the time of your link which is before my time on Arachne. But it is such a long time since I did much sewing and I just cut the thread and threaded it up (obviously using the end which was on my lap). Lesson one relearned the hard way. I stopped digging holes last night and checked out the last bit. Not only have I struggled but although parts of it are stitched really nicely and it is lying flat, having worked it side by side with a gentle oversewing but there are two obvious very untidy places, maybe struggling with the threads at the time and pulled without realising so now close to the end the lace with the holes to take elastic and ribbon section is tighter than the piece of edging lace with horseshoes which I am sewing on to it. I am very unhappy with that, so now will find a way to gently tease it apart if I can. If there are places that just wont come apart I might need to sacrifice the ribbon strip so I can pull the threads out with tweezers or whatever and might have to rework this piece but which ever way it works out I will work the sewings by pinning the parts back onto the patterns and pillow and work lacemakers sewings to bring them all together which never occurred to me before I started this time. This could all take me some time, but at this stage time is not a problem, it isnât needed yet and as I want it to be around for a long time I need to make it look as lovely as it should be. Thank you Jeri and to several other lovely Arachnids for taking the time last night to try to come to my rescue. Much appreciated.Guess what I was doing in my sleep? Many thanks Sue T Dorset UK Dear Sue, Not sure, but it is possible you are sewing against the grain of the thread. Have you tried threading your needle from the other end of the thread? Dear Jeri. This is something I never thought before. I used to contemplate the twist of the thread when winding bobbins, not when sewing... A big thank you again, your knowing and help to this list is invaluable. Re: [lace] Photos from OIDFA Adelaide Congress
Dear Jean and David, Thank you! Who did the photography? Did everyone notice on the Lace Wine swan label by Lauran Sundin that the gold wire, purple thread, and pearls contains her initials, and that it is finished as a necklace? Maybe her students at Waddesdon Manor in September will see it. The architectural and lacy ironwork are fabulous, beautifully framed with tree branches, structural elements, etc. The black swan is fantastic. Viewing these photos reminded me of Our Lacemakers of Maine handout for demonstrations. It is a folded-in-half sheet of paper, that opens like a book. On the front is our logo by Lori Howe (Lacefairy) and an April 29, 1939 quote I found from Coco Chanel: I consider lace to be one of the prettiest imitations ever made of the fantasy of nature; lace always evokes for me those incomparable designs which the branches and leaves of trees embroider across the sky, and I do not think that any invention of the human spirit could have a more graceful or precise origin. Jean and David, the photos of Adelaide you have put on the OIDFA site are superb. Thanks for all you both do for Lace. [lace] Help with sewing with thread
I get the digest, so am always a bit behind times! Sue, I was also about to say try threading the needle from the other end of the thread. I learned that trick with Catherine Barley, when she was over here, and I was struggling with some Brok thread (I think it was.) Threading from the other end solved much of the problem.! I regularly drop the needle to let it untwist, though, like David, I often give a twist to the needle as I pull it through the stitch - providing I have noticed which way the needle spins when dropped, before hand!! Crochet cotton, when working on my knotted lace, - is particularly 'twisty'!
