Re: [lace] Rumblings in Russia

2014-09-02 Thread Achim Siebert
Oh my goodness - this is so backward. Didn't they ever hear of microfibers,
that absorb even more moisture than cotton? Modern synthetics are really not
comparable to what we had say twenty years ago - I was really surprised how
comfortable , soft and fast drying high quality sportswear can be after buying
a polo shirt and some clothes for the gym, being a die hard 100% cotton wearer
up to then.

Though the "safety" reason is probably just an excuse, I guess the cotton
industry there is going down and they just have no clue what to do against that.
Maybe they should make good threads for lace making with their cotton, there's
certainly a market for that ;-)

Achim.

RE: [lace] Salamander group

2014-09-02 Thread Agnes Boddington
I was introduced to Escher's (a compatriot of mine) art work at a young age
and even met him once at a gallery and have been fascinated by his works
ever since.
I have several books on Escher's works, and have a long standing intention
of trying to turn some of these into lace patterns. If time and talent
permitted me ...
Here you find a lot of his mathematical drawings:

Including the salamander or lizard (as he called it).

[lace] Escher designs

2014-09-02 Thread carolina de la Guardia
I am a fan of Escher designs and all pieces called "Metamorphosis" are
impressive. In effect the salamander lace is taken from:

http://www.mcescher.com/gallery/switzerland-belgium/no-25-lizard

I have worked recently an insert for T-shirt in black forming a group of
opposite leaves which remembers Escher designs:

Kind regards from Barcelona

I agree that
attempting to keep all salamander postings in one thread
will make the
discussion easier to read -- and easier to avoid for those not
interested.
Robin said:

Not planning to join the salamander-makers, but my suggestion is
that they put
'salamander' in the subject line (before the more specific
subject of the
message). That way, those who don't want to read them can
easily recognize the
unwanted messages. Some people should be able to set up
a 'rule' to remove the
messages from their list.

Personally, I don't see a
problem with salamander messages in the Arachne list
any more than any other
thread. But labelling the salamander messages should be
a reasonable
compromise.

[lace] Another Salamander/Escher project

2014-09-02 Thread Lyn Bailey
Carolina's Escher-like T shirt brings to mind another possible salamander
project. I am especially fond of lace on T shirts, as I wear them a lot,
and it is a good way to display lace. I would take the pattern and reduce
it until it could fit Aurifil 50 thread, and make enough salamanders to put
together on a T shirt, the same as an Escher print, or the original
Salamander Project. Using all sorts of colors, it would make a very neat
shirt. (Another project on my T shirt list is to use Ulrike Voelcker's
Flanders letters book to make a sign saying, "This is bobbin lace")

Lyn, presently vacationing in Southwest Harbor, Maine, USA where the weather
has been beautiful. Rain at night, clear during the day, comfortable for
shorts or pants. And lobster!
