[lace] Honiton lace

2014-11-13 Thread ann.humphreys
I have found a piece of Honiton lace I made about 15 years ago and which I
thought was lost. Unfortunately it has become slightly discoloured and has a
small stain on it (no idea what). It is a very delicate piece and I would like
to restore it. Any ideas please.

[lace] Lacemakers Get Everywhere!!

2014-11-13 Thread nestalace . carol
Hi Spiders All,

I am a member of the North Norfolk Assn for the Blind (my Mum has impaired
sight, so I joined as I chauffeur her around...) and we enjoyed greatly a
handbell ringing group last Thursday.   I was intrigued and, as I read music,
play the double bass and the piano, decided that I would like to be involved,
and went to ask details.

Imagine my surprise when the lady - who I admit I thought looked as if I should
know her! - turned out to be a teacher in Norfolk.   So - we had a chat, and I
took her phone number, so that I could maybe join the group.   Watch this space
...

Best wishes to all spiders, and may your pins never bend.

Carol

[lace] Arachne at IOLI 2015 convention

2014-11-13 Thread Janice Blair
Hi,
As Anita has posted about the class information being available on the IOLI
website now, I thought I would let you all know that I have it on good
authority that next year we will be able to purchase box lunches at a
concession counter and take them into an area of the ballroom so that our
Arachne members can have our get-together at lunch time.

Check out the teacher/class information. We have so much available next year
it will be hard to choose which classes you want. I get to assemble the
information for the Bulletin and website, working with the teachers, but I
never decide what I want to take until I see the Bulletin. Later we will have
photos of the laces and the full supply lists for most of them on the website.
We are trying some short 3 hour classes throughout the week for those that
don't want to take two 12 hour classes, and hopefully, with local advertising
we might draw in some new lacemakers. Hope you enjoy anticipating what to sign
up for, and please share the information with your guilds.

To my conservation and restoration followers.

Let us imagine I'll not be able to answer a question like this. Please go
to the notebook you have been keeping - paper copies of my recommendations
- and locate one that best suits Honiton.

Verify the memo you found is in our archives. Memos appear to have been
shortened and the type face changed, which is why I ask that you verify all
the information is still there.

http://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com

To find the appropriate memo, insert in Search box Jeri Ames, (insert
memo date).

The Archives are very important to us, and we should all want to be sure
they will work in future. If all is well, send the Archive information in a
memo to Arachne. Thank you !
---
Ann (and Diana):

We always start with the least drastic approach.

As to your requests, be sure the tiny Honiton motif does not go down the
drain ! Cut a rectangular piece of soft tulle net (not the scratchy kind)
or see-through fabric about 5 x 10 for a motif; larger for larger piece.
Fold in half to make a square. Open, and put the Honiton in the center,
then fold again to make a sandwich. Baste around the tiny motif (not into
it) so it will not move from the center. It is now ready to float - in no
more than one inch of Orvus soapy distilled water at room temperature.

You did not say what has caused the discoloration. If it was from acid
burn, the sodium lauryl sufate soap named Orvus (Procter Gamble product
used by museums) will neutralize that. Will some one in the UK advise where
to get it in small quantities, please? The 5 net square is so small, you
can use a glass bowl instead of a large basin.

You'll be able to look at the lace through the net to see if it is
cleaner. It can soak for quite a while, with regular monitoring. Start with
15-30 minutes. As the threads expand from water, they may release the
unidentified stain.

Hold the net sandwich to the side when pouring off soapy water and when
pouring in rinse water. At the finger pressing stage, you can leave lace in
the sandwich and finger press on a clean plate that you can then put
somewhere safe, away from children and pets. It will dry quickly. How does
it
look?

Re: [lace] re-Ypres Bobbin that Survived World War

2014-11-13 Thread Jean Eke
So sorry that a slip of the mouse muddled my original posting.

Being rather diffident I asked a friend how I should word the post and cut and
pasted in too much haste.

The fault was all mine.

Sadly that terrible war which caused so much devastation lasted until
11.11.1918.

Hoping that the folly which causes war should be met with the wisdom to
prevent it.

[lace] Re: Arachne at IOLI 2015 convention

2014-11-13 Thread Anita Hansen
Janice is correct, we are working on having pay as you go concessions
available for a quick lunch at the hotel. We are meeting with the hotel
tomorrow about this very topic, so I will have more information soon. I'm not
sure if complete box lunches will be available, or ala cart items. Which
would you prefer? The concessions would be open to all attendees, but the
Arachne folks would gather in a designated portion of the ballroom. A
similar setup would be available for the OIDFA gathering as well. We will
also be discussing options for breakfast.

Regarding classes, spread the word to your embroidery friends that one of the
new owners of the Nordic Needle, Debi Feyh, will be teaching Hardanger
embroidery throughout the week. It's unfortunate that Decorah's Vesterheim
Norwegian-American Museum is a 2.5 hour drive north and too far to include in
our scheduled tours. But if you are traveling from that direction I highly
encourage a brief stop! They have all sorts of lace techniques on display and
even a bobbin lace pillow!

Another museum with some lace is right there in CR is the Czech Museum. I
was the there the Sept. after the flood and there was a small bit in a store
front in a shopping mall with a few gorgeous costumes with some lace. I had
heard that the original building was repaired and the Museum has reopened. I
though it well seeing.

Best to all,

snow last night and it's still there this evening.
