[lace] 20th Anniversary

2015-03-15 Thread L. E. Weiss
Hello all-
For a long time, I've been looking at the mug hanging in my kitchen that
reads "2000 Lace@arachne.com - 5th Anniversary 2000" (a spider hangs off of
the "2"), and wondering if there would be a 20th anniversary commemoration.
It's been at least 5 years since we managed that. (Thank you, Jo Anne
Pruitt and others who made all of those great commemoratives possible years
ago.) I joined that first spring and what an amazing 20 years it's been
for this online community.
While I understand Jeri's approach to calculating the anniversary year, I
think counting this as our 20th year would be consistent with past
commemorations. I agree that we could certainly kick off a year of
celebrating.
Regards,
Lorraine in Albany, NY
(where it finally got up above freezing long enough to get the car washed,
such thrills!)

RE: [lace] Arachne Commemoratives

2015-03-15 Thread Noelene Lafferty
Such a good thought to plan this a year ahead, Jeri.

In my mind we need a single supplier who will
(1) supply both midlands, continentals and squares,
(2) also supply shuttles,
(3) someone who accepts credit cards or PayPal, and
(4) who would be willing to post out individual parcels world wide
themselves, with everyone ordering direct from that supplier.
(5) Those wanting commens would have to commit to an order say 4 or 5 months
in advance so that the supplier could know what quantity to make.

Postal charges are now so horrendous for international (and local) postage,
that anyone ordering would have to accept the cost involved, but this would
be a very special occasion. I would dearly love to have a bobbin (or two)
to celebrate 20 years of Arachne. I think I already have most other commems
issued.

I was the Australian agent for a batch of Arachne commems once; I also
organised a similar issue of commems locally recently, and I've learnt a lot
of lessons from both experiences. Sending a large parcel of bobbins in
bulk to another country often attracts import duty, which complicates things
no end. And means an awful lot of work for the organiser re-posting,
whereas a supplier is usually set up to post out world-wide.

I'm willing to act as an Australian rep in a discussion committee along
these lines. Anyone from other countries interested in forming a committee
to discuss this, please email me direct at the address below. I am retired,
am not in the best of health so don't travel much, and therefore have some
time to spare for this, as long as it doesn't interfere with my lacemaking
time!

I too love Stuart Johnson bobbins, I got 4 from him at our recent Laceday, they
have inlaid in the shaft a type of resin that looks like marble, they are
beautiful. He also made our commemoratives for the Laceday.

[lace] Sakagami Katsuko

2015-03-15 Thread Nathalie
Hello everyone,

A Japanese lace teacher passed away.

Lace became part of Japanese culture due to people who devoted
themselves to this art.

Sakagami Katsuko was a lace teacher who will be remembered with
respect and gratitude.
Mrs. Sakagami designed lace, made lace and was a wonderful teacher.

Re: [lace] Commemoratives

2015-03-15 Thread Nancy Neff
Could we please make sure that whomever we pick will do continentals as well
as midlands?  I didn't see any Binche or Bayeux or anything other than
midlands on Stuart Johnson's site.  I'd like to get a bobbin that I could use
on my pillow, and I use only Binche or Bayeux.  The painter that
Antje suggested, Alison Tolson, appears to paint continentals--at least
Bayeux based on the photos on her web-site, and I know Chris Parsons does
several continental styles.
Thanks,NancyConnecticut USA, where it's finally above freezing and the snow is
melting, like the coming of Aslan!

Re: [lace] Arachne Anniversay

2015-03-15 Thread Jeriames
Dear Lace Lovers,

Yes, we are most grateful to Liz Reynolds. It is the 20th anniversary of
our founding, but we are actually 19 years of age. We can celebrate our
founding this year and still have a year to plan a larger birthday with
goodies next year.

It would be nice to have a committee of Arachne representatives by nation
or continent, with a person representing each. And, they could select
someone who is very organized to coordinate?

We should also have volunteers working on a mini-celebration next year at
the Slovenia OIDFA Congress, and other large (national) group meetings in
2016.

Any volunteers? Obviously, some financing will be needed for public
relations, etc. - another subject for discussion, but maybe best done by the
committee instead of loading so much on our lace discussion site.

Let me hasten to add that I am not volunteering. I am already on a
research committee that uses my library, and I am getting old, so looking for a

permanent home for the library. This is the most important thing I can do
for future lace and embroidery scholars. We have just heard how a
carefully-placed lace study collection can be caught in a web of
college/museum
politics, so quite a challenge.

Arachne was started April 12, 1995 by Liz Reynolds. She has maintained it
all
these years, even when she was too busy to read the messages. Many thanks
to
Liz.
There has been nothing said about commemoratives this year. I think it's
been
a year or two or more since we had any. It was always a lot of work for
someone when we had them, though it was fun for the rest of us.
April 12 is on a Sunday. We can make it Arachne Day, and all plan to make
at
least a little lace that day -- and toast Arachne.
I have learned so much over the years from this List and it's many people.
Thanks to everyone for the education and encouragement.

Noelene,

Does anyone know what date is our 20th anniversary?

I think Tamara night know. I reckon it was around May and I joined in Nov 1995.

Might I suggest Chris Parsons in the UK be approached to do a commemorative
