[lace] County Fair Win

2016-07-11 Thread Janice Blair
I sent an email yesterday about the Arachne get together in Indianapolis, and
it occurred to me that the digests are few and far apart these days, so in the
hope of generating one before I leave on Saturday, I would post another
email.
I now live in southern California and am a member of the Silvergate Lacers.
We are encouraged to submit lace entries in the San Diego County Fair so
that our lace category never gets canceled.  I entered this year and won the
Best of the Lace Division so I got a beautiful large rosette, plus a First
ribbon and an Honorary ribbon for my second piece.  I attended a nice
presentation ceremony just before the fair closed on July 4th.  As those who
go to IOLI and hear how many demonstration hours each chartered guild has
accumulated for the year, you may have been surprised to hear that our small
guild usually has 1200 hours or more.  This is because we demo at the fair
for a month every day it is open. They have been doing it for 37 years!!  It
is our guild 40th anniversary in October.
I was interviewed by phone for a local paper while I was up in Fresno.  As
the interview came out of the blue, I babbled on about lappets and Thomas
Lester.  I wondered what would be printed.  You can read the article online

My winning piece, a Beds giraffe, was a design from a lappet that Holly Van
Sciver had redrawn. If you go to her website, I think it is still on there.
My second piece was a teapot and cup designed by Kumiko Nagasaki.  She
designed the Binche teapot especially for me at the Winter Lace Conference in
February in Costa Mesa.  I think it took her just over a week to design two
teapots and a large doily and do the technical drawings. Amazing.
As the theme for the fair this year was Mad About The Fair - Alice in
Wonderland meets Steampunk, I chose a background of Johnny Depp as the Mad
Hatter pouring tea.  That was the Honorary Mention as it was in the same
category as the Beds giraffe.  Note to self: make different styles of lace.
