[lace] Dictionary

2016-09-27 Thread Alex Stillwell
Hi Brian

So you thought you would write a dictionary? I have that Tee shirt too. When
you have been fascinated by a subject and worked in it to the extent we have
you wish to share the enjoyment with others, hence you put it into a book. I
had the same wobbles when getting close to finishing mine and I was given
permission to include to following excerpt from H.W.Fowler,s Acknowledgements
in the Concise Oxford Dictionary.

A Dictionary maker, unless he is a monster of omniscience, must deal with a
great many matters of which he has no first hand knowledge. That he has been
guilty of errors and omissions in some of these he will learn soon after
publication.

I followed it with -

This makes me realise that I am not alone in my concern about the accuracy of
information I have collated.

And I found my a mistake after giving the printer the go-ahead and before I
received my first copy. Regardless of errors, and with such an extensive
content there are bound to be a few, we will all be delighted to have access
to all the work you have put into your dictionary of bobbins.

Blow the dust, use your bobbins and make lace

[lace] Pellestrina

2016-09-27 Thread Angharad Rixon
Hello Susan,
Yes, the ploychrome laces are amazing! Unfortunately actual production for
fashion on Pellestrina has ceased... there is some small-scale production
on Burano for the bridal market, however, unlike Venice's velvet weavers,
the lace makers have not been able to maintain an active relationship with
the fashion world.
The curious thing is that the skill and time required to make lace is no
greater than that to weave velvet by hand (there are still 5 companies in
Italy who do that). However, beyond technical skill there needs to be a
relationship between designers, makers and industry to allow these crafts
to survive. If you are interested I have a post about a Venetian velvet
weaving workshop here:

Best wishes,
Angharad

Thank you Angharad! Oh my, that elongated floral triangle is a tour de
force. The shading reminds me of Sandi Woods Milanese class! Does the
fashion industry in Italy source their lace from Pellistrina? I could see
that on a coat or dress in a heartbeat. Sincerely, Susan Hottle
