Re: [lace] Old postcard
Patricia, How wonderful to hear that you have such a treasure. The village of Spania Dolina is known for its lace. Though many of the ladies are now too old to live on their own and have moved from the mountains down into cities to live with their children and grandchildren. The lace of Spania Dolina, while looking like torchon is quite unique and has its specifics in terms of patterns, colors and number of pairs required for it to be authentic. The patterns were never documented, just passed down from mother to daughter much like dowry. All patterns were worked on the same grid. The lace was always made for sale never for personal use. A merchant would walk the mountains once a month taking the lace to market and bringing new supplies. Let me know if you'd like to learn more, I'd be happy to help. Also, if you wouldn't mind, I would love to see a picture of the postcard!! RE: [lace] Old postcard
There was an IOLI workshop on spania dolina lace recently. If interested, here are some photos from laceioli about that kind of bobbin lace -- http://laceioli.ning.com/main/search/search?q=Spania+dolina&page=3 -Original Message- From: owner-l...@arachne.com [mailto:owner-l...@arachne.com] On Behalf Of Patricia Runcie "Spania Dolina, Slovakia, Czechoslovakia" Patricia in Wales - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Old postcard
I have been sent an old postcard of bobbin lace being sold. On the back it says: "Bobbin made laces for sale, 1950. "Spania Dolina, Slovakia, Czechoslovakia" the photo ia by Frnatisek Kalesny The picture shows a mass of women with three in the front each holding up a piece of lace. One is a rectangular mat, one is a rectangular 'frame' presumably made to edge a piece of linen or cotton material and the third seems to be a rectangular mat but is definitely much longer than the first one. All seem to be Torchon. There is lots more lace flat on the stall/counter but design cannot be distinguished. [lace] Lace Dress by Isaac Mizrahi on QVC for Inspiration
Almost everywhere, there is a way to shop from home using your computer; in this case - _www.qvc.com_ (http://www.qvc.com) Today, there is a very reasonably priced lace dress (cover up for a swim suit?) by Isaac Mizrahi. If you select A288082 to view, it is possible to see a video presentation even when the dress is not being shown on your TV. I cannot comment on the quality until I receive the black one ordered. Am thinking that on my elderly "figure" it will be in better taste to wear lightweight black tights, and a pair of black patent leather shoes in the closet will finish off the look. When one goes to a special occasion in the U.S., there is usually a need for a cover up to ward off air conditioning drafts, so I'll pair with a lightweight jacket with sleeves to cover arm "wings". The challenge: How long would it take for you (or even a group) to reproduce this dress - using bobbin lace techniques? I am thinking of those very complex lace designs in some of our lace books!
