[lace] Using chenille as a passive & a Hamilton lace sample

2017-08-27 Thread hottleco
Hello All! E Day (Exhibit Day) is almost here & two more samples are in the
bag! With all the chat about chenille in Blonde lace, I decided to add some as
a passive in my sample of logarithmic lace. It's next to an Oliver Twist
glitter thread. Also decided to take a page out of Lauran Sundin's book &
finish my threads with beads. It wasn't as easy as using wire but it does give
a different appearance. Worth trying again. To tie off/finish the chenille, I
hand picked the chenille fluff out of the base threads & gently tied them.
Worked great. Jean Leader very graciously drafted the famous Hamilton collar
lace & diagrammed the gimp paths so it could be included in our Scottish lace
section. I haven't done gimps in years & it shows! Using a Q-Tip dipped in
water & a pin, I nudged the gimp & it is slightly improved since I took my
photo. Both are on Flickr Photostream. The Hamilton lace somehow missed my
album so I hope it's not floating in yours. Apologies if so! !
My third piece of lace wasn't quite so lucky. I've restarted that pattern
but it's not looking good to finish by Thursday. Can only hope that students &
faculty find something to love in our Edinboro, PA display. We will be front &
center in the library during the Highland Games & Festival Sept. 7-10. Hope
they have a good turnout! Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA

Oh you can make bobbin lace poppies, our local community celebrations
included all types of handcrafted poppies including ceramics.

Just a little bit of background. In 2015 when local communities around

it was being said that the War memorial in Canberra wanted to collect
all the poppies produced by the different communities and would plant
them all in the gardens surrounding the War Memorial. Problem was that
many of the poppies produced w62,000ere not on stems and could not be
'planted' and since 2015 the poppies have played a major part in local
commemorative services since. I know that locally at least one wreath
layed and the ANZAC Centernary commemoration was made from hand made
poppies. The rest were put into a huge display.

So I believe that the poor War Memorial in Canberra could not go with
its original plan and so the request for more poppies. We have until
next year so no real panic just pull out your red and black yarns and
start knitting, crocheting etc.

[lace] commemorative poppies for the Australian War Memorial in Canberra

2017-08-27 Thread Sue Babbs
I have just been told about this project to create commemorative poppies, and
thought I’d post it in case anyone wants to participate:
https://5000poppies.wordpress.com/

Here’s a quick intro from the website: we are in the throes of planning our
final installation at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra in 2018. While
I can’t give you details of the installation … I can tell you that it will
be a spectacularly fitting tribute to those who served and sacrificed, their
families, their communities and in a way, the whole nation … I can’t tell
you how excited we are!

This wonderful community led, community driven project has been a testament to
the depth of feeling we have for our ANZACS … and Marg and I cannot thank
you enough for your continued support of our efforts. It’s been quite a
journey and we are justifiably proud of what we have all achieved as an
incredible team.

So we will have one last huge push … to create approx 62,000 poppies on
stems in honour of the fallen in WWI to be planted in Canberra on Remembrance
Day 2018. It will take a huge community effort to pull it together … but
first the poppies …

Patterns for knitted, crocheted, felted, machine-embroidered and felted
poppies are at: https://5000poppies.wordpress.com/poppy-patterns/

I am thinking of participating as my paternal grandmother’s two brothers had
emigrated to Australia just before WWI, and so fought with the Australian
troops. Thankfully both survived.
