Re: [lace] Cilaos needle lace
I agree with Sue B., it's got to be a form of Teneriffe (Nanduti, Sol, etc., is there a single name to encompass the whole lot?). Lots of local names for the same basic technique. Lay threads radially across a circular "frame" (could be nothing more than a ring of pins, or could be an object designed and devoted to this function), weave and interlace threads, usually in a circular pattern, though and around the radials, then do an edging to hold it all together. I don't remember ever seeing so many fine threads bundled together, though. The thick, needle-woven rays on the outside of this piece are like the needlewoven boxes in hedebo and hardanger, but are also often found in the Teneriffe family. Not usually so big and fat, though. Rats—& you’re the only person I know who has been to Madagascar! Hope you get to the other island at a convenient time so you can tell us all about it. Thanks, Susan, for posting this photo. It looks akin to Teneriffe lace to me. So far Madagascar airport controllers have always allowed our Air France flights to come direct to the capital of Madagascar on the dates we have been flying, so we've not yet been sent to Reunion Island (which sometimes happens!) So no direct knowledge of Cilaos Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com http://babbsandbaobabs.blogspot.com/ - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. [lace] Aurifil Mako 80 thread source?
Hello Again! I see what you mean about pricey—$6.95 a spool! Ironically, I paid less than $6 for a spool locally, however, white/neutrals only—no color. Then I ran across The Fat Quarter Shop (online) in TX. They are selling “sets” of 6 spools at a discount. I ordered the 1930’s colors for $19.98 because three of the colors were on my wish list anyway. Usual disclaimers—I have no relationship with the vendor! A big Thank You to everyone who recommended the product. Hope this info helps if someone else needs this thread size.
