Fwd: [lace] Question about beads

2015-06-15 Thread Barbara Engle
BE CAREFUL when using Swarovski crystals, too...I "always" use seed beads on
each opening any time I am working with thread. This might even be true of
crystals from other countries, also. As I never use these, I cannot say.

Re: [lace] Estate planning

2014-02-12 Thread Barbara Engle
Yes, Lyn, and I thank Jane. I have saved this..as I am nearing the place where
I will soon have dispose of over 30 years of lace books and "stuff". I still
lace a bit, and love all the books and simply cannot bring myself to disposing
of all the printed matter and materials. I still instruct folks in beginning
lace, am expected to be a source information of any related topics. This last
is a laugh:))) but I try.
So long as my bifocals allow me use the small pillows I will plug along making
little lacy gifties. My family always want what comes off of the pillow,
shuttles , needles and hooksand, as I
am past 86, we will soon be a five generation family..so lots of gifts to
make.and so little time.

Right this minute I am knitting. Tomorrow, who know what will inspire my
fingers!?
For a lurker ...I have really said enough to last for years

Re: [lace] Old lace magazines

2013-07-29 Thread Barbara Engle
I just sent an email by mistakewas not ready

As I was saying.

Miriam and Karenoh my, this IS a problem! Both for books and
publications!
I started lacing in1970 and the amount of materials I have accumulated is mind
boggling.
At half past 85, I am still teaching a bit and, being in good health, not ready
to clear out, but one day my kids will want to know what to do with all the
goodies. We need regional clearing houses...any one have any ideas??? This
last thought has started my wheels spinning, albeit slowly. I will keep
thinking...you, also?

Re: [lace] eyesight

2013-04-02 Thread Barbara Engle
I have to jump in hereI made lace etc, for 30 + years...still do, on a
small scale . Like my father and one son, I have never had too working eyes.
I have driven a motor home all over this country. I know that I have no depth
perceptionbut one does adjust, sometimes a lot!!!

Doris Southard used to tell me about a blind lacemaker in Pittsburgh . As the
lady used to knit, also, Doris (who was a braillewriter for the Iowa
university system) would Braille knitting instructions for her.

So yes, impaired eyesight does not need to be a problem..depends on the
sight in the ' good eye'.
At half past 85, I need to use a pillow that I can tuck up to my tummy...so
it works for all my needs. Actually it is really easier to tat and beadbut
hard not to lace a little.just a little so I can still remember enough
to help beginners

I have lurked on this list since 'round about '98...always reading with
love and thanks for all the sharing.

Hi, bye and hugs to all who remember me :-

[lace] been following this string with interest.

2013-01-23 Thread Barbara Engle
I have to jump in herethe first person I ever saw making bobbin lace was
me! Since the mid 1930's I knew and was curious about the 'pretty lady making
lace on the big pillow'as described by a museum guard. Living close to
NYC, one of my playgrounds was the NYC art museum. Finally, in the late
1960's, I learned WHAT she was doing! Thus started a love affair.
Any more detail is burdensome.

Gee, no response to this inquiry.?This is a needelace akin to Armenian knotted
lace. One of several variations, this is Turkish needle Oya. Can be
crocheted, beaded, etc. Oya loosely translates to embellishment. Learning
to make the knot is easy enough. Consistency, for beauty is HARD. As time
allows, I have been working on it. Not much success, so far. But I persist
Google and go to You Tube..lots there...or write to me. past Pieceworks
have had a couple of articles.

[lace] help?

2011-01-11 Thread Barbara Engle
Does anyone have a copy of the Lace Express issue 1/98 and could look up
something for me...or sell me? I know I can buy it, new, but I would have
to buy the whole year.

I have the pricking for the triple swan. I wonder if there some text that I
do not have...that might answer some questions regarding metallic threads,
stitches, and assembly I bought the material for this ages ago...then I
broke my arm and, after several years and three surgeries, I think I am
confidentantly back to lacing againready for a real project. .

Please email me privately, if you can make sense of this email ! I will
pay for any expenses incurred for scans, copies and/or postage.
TIA

Re: [lace] treating hands for handling silk

2010-11-20 Thread Barbara Engle
Wet/dry sandpaper is used for finishing paint on car repairs. . It comes
very fine...I have some 1500 and 1600 in my closetand 1200., I learned
about it when I was repairing bobbins. So I just keep it handyworks on
crystal too..smooth that little chip!

I use it all the time , to finish wood, plastic, the skin around my nails
and the surface of my nails..I buy mine at Ace hardware in USA.
