[lace] New lacemaker
Dear Friends: While on a cruise this past week, I met a young woman from South Dakota and gave her some torchon lace lessons.? She is very interested in lacemaking.? We made a rib, cloth-stitch bandage and a sample of torchon ground, all with embroidery floss from her mother and my rosaline bobbins and a makeshift pillow. Is there anyone out there that might know of a teacher or group for her?? She lives in Spearfish, South Dakota.? She is in her late twenties and is or has been working on a Master's Degree in teaching I think.? I hope some of you have got some suggestions or contacts that she might connect with.? I have promised to set her up with basic supplies:? pillow, bobbins, pins, book, thread.? Linda Sheff More new features than ever. Re: [lace] block pillows and BL scarves
Dear Friends: In reading about these unusual projects, I would like to share with you what my teachers in Sweden completed. Nina Drigoris and Bergitta Rudeskog made two 3-story panels of fiber optic torchon for a private designer/architect. Both of these panels flank the main entrance of Cartier jewelers in Munich. it is a stunning effect: fiber optic lace on a grand scale. Last summer, at my lace class in Vadstena, I was fortunate enough to see Nina's film of the making with special large boards and pegs and modified shuttles for use as bobbins. What a wonderful project. This was also followed by Nina being on television last summer where she demonstrated Swedish lace-making. Then the newscaster tried it . . . . but that's another story. Re: [lace] Alice - surgery
Dear Alice: I hope you're feeling better soon. I had a bad fall last Mother's Day during the Lowell flood and was knocked out. I sustained a head injury and lay in the rain and missing downspout water. I thought I was screaming for my husband and was embarrassed that the neighbors would see me, but he said the noise sounded like a cat mewing on the porch! He split his pants trying to help me up and had to take me to the hospital like that. ANYWAY -- the incident made me very conscious of cluttered halls, stairs and lack of good lighting in our house. So we are adding better lighting and more of it to our house in general AND RAILINGS. So my point in writing is two-fold: get-well wishes for Alice and to pass on the potential dangers that lurk in our everyday environment, possibly more dangerous because we are used to them. I was actually outside at 9:00 a.m.,rushing to get to my office, and the stairs were unbelievably slippery from days of rain. So, it can happen anywhere. I wish there had been a railing. Take care Alice and everyone out there. [lace] cross-stitch and needlepoint software
Dear Friends: I seem to remember that somewhere in the distant past that there was a discussion on software for converting digital photos to either cross-stitch or needlepoint designs and that it would assign specific DMC or Paternayan colors. Re: [lace] bobbin lace teacher needed for Cabot Vermont
Dear Kate: I didn't have a map available to check on locations, but Evelyn Gant, and Fletcher Farms are well-known in Vermont for bobbin-lace classes. Perhaps someone on the list will have the particulars. She used to, and maybe still does, own "Fine Threads". How far is Cabot from Massachusetts? Re: [lace] anna burda
Dear Lacemaking Friends: I also subscribed to Anna for many years but they told me it was no longer published in ANY language! So they substituted Lena for me. It's nice and okay but it is more for doing other things than lace in my opinion. However, the latest issue does have a little bit of lace (torchon). And these issues do have some interesting projects that I might do. So, that is all that I know about Anna's demise. When Lena passes over it will truly be dark times. [lace] ANNA Magazine
Dear Friends: I also was disappointed to find that ANNA had run its course. I had subscribed to it for many years. However, the supplier did send me a selection sheet that enables me to select a substitute. They included four choices and LENA looks like the most compatible to the ANNA content. If you are in the states, the supplier/distributor is GLP International, 153 So. Dean St., Englewood, NJ 07631; Tel. 201-871-1010 and the e-mail is [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) . LENA is definitely more expensive than ANNA but it appears to be a mixed needlework & crafts magazine as well. Linda Sheff ** AOL now offers free email to everyone. [lace] distributors of Liana threads
Dear arachne-colleagues: Can someone give me some information on why it is impossible to obtain Liana threads in the U.S. and where I might find a supplier of Liana threads from Europe for some of my Anna projects. I have tried to substitute DMC cordonnet, but not been happy with the result. I have tried google, but don't find Liana thread per se, just some other Anchor threads and the occasional art-thread or metallic thread under the Liana name. I am looking for the Liana crochet cotton. Also can anyone give me any information on classes in Macrame crochet (as shown in March Anna). Linda ** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Re: [lace] Introduction
Dear Deborah: Welcome to our list. Although there have been many discussions about how we all got started making bobbin lace, your story struck an identical chord to mine! I was living in Mexico City during 1985-1986 while my husband was on sabbatical. While I was there, I also saw bobbin lace "courses" in an Anna magazine that had been translated into Spanish. I remembered seeing a lacemaking pillow in Ipswich, MA at the Whipple House and one in the General Lee mansion outside of Washington, DC. When we returned to the US to live, I started to work for an English company with a site in Massachusetts. Through many telephone conversations with the ladies in Amersham, I was able to trace enough information to find a supplier, books, etc. And that is how I got started (and that includes the horrid lacemaking kit). [lace] Books and plays about lace
Dear Friends: In response to the e-mail earlier this month about books and plays about lace, I also have a movie by Ingmar Bergman that I think was entitled: "Cries and Whispers". In the first 1-2 minutes, one of the sisters makes bobbin lace while waiting for the other sister to take her shift caring for the younger sister. I have also seen the Betty Davis movie and remember the conversation about making lace. I had forgotten about it but remember that specific part. I think I came into the movie half-way through so the plot was not very straight-forward for me so I have walked away with "snatches" in my memory. [lace] machine lace website
Dear Friends: Well, we (actually, that would be I, since husband isn't helping) are redecorating and remodeling. I started searching over the web this week for plisse window shades. Whilst doing this, I happened upon a site named: _www.decoratingwithlace.com_ (http://www.decoratingwithlace.com) . I checked with them about the shades, and although they don't have them, they did answer me back immediately, very politely, and have a wide range of lace curtains, table linens, etc. So, I just thought I would pass that info on. I was so impressed with the customer service, that I will probably order the lace curtains from them. They had some interesting things on the site, made out of lace, applications I had never considered. Dear Bev: The fan was gold and therefore, by definition, well-cast (ouch). Very pretty but not lacy, I don't think, but elegant and showing up in all the right places. [lace] Movie
Dear Friends: With all this talk about fans, there is a pleasant "cliche" chick-flick entitled: "A Good Woman" starring Helen Hunt, Scarlet Johansson, and Steve Wilkenson. It is based upon Oscar Wilde's play: "Lady Windemere's Fan". The plot is a cliche, the dialogue is totally cliche, but it is still a romantic and amusing movie revolving around an expensive fan. So if you have a chance, you may wish to rent it and watch it. [lace] Just back from lacing in Sweden
Dear lacemaking friends: I have just returned home from another wonderful lacemaking trip to Sweden. I so thoroughly enjoyed my experience at OIDFA/Lund that I just keep going back! For those of you not familiar, they give 1 week courses over a 2-week period. in Vadstena, Sweden in bobbin lace. They are held at the Vadstena folkhoegskola, part of the whole Brigattine kloister & monastery complex. The buildings go back to the 1400's. The housing accommodations are also really good: private bath, large bedroom and shared kitchen, dining, eating area in each unit. Groceries are a short walk. The entire location is set on the Vattern lake (second largest lake in Sweden) and English is spoken everywhere, including class. I was at the school last year and this year and will definitely return next year. The teachers are excellent and facilities excellent also. In my opinion, Vadstena is one of the prettiest places that I have ever visited. I swam in the lake (really cold!) in the midnight sun. I walked, made lace, browsed antique and book shops, ate well and had a wonderful experience yet again. It has never failed to disappoint me. Wonderful friends from Japan, Sweden, Finland, Denmark, England, etc. I stayed for two weeks. And it was easy on the purse. The classes include Swedish laces on several levels: beginners, intermediate, fine lace, church lace, contemporary laces. There are lectures, abundant coffee breaks w/cookies, outings to lace exhibits. If you are interested, they can be reached at [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) or [EMAIL PROTECTED] (mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]) . Birgitta Hagemark speaks and writes English well. Their website is _www.svenskaspetsar.se_ (http://www.svenskaspetsar.se) but is mostly in Swedish. Now, off to Holland for my two weeks with Jeannette Van Oord - another fabulous class in Doorn with gourmet food (and lots of it!) that is also easy on the pockets. Does life get any better? Re: [lace] Dear Abby
Dear Friends: THIS IS NOT LEGAL ADVICE AND ALL WILLS/TRUST LAWS DIFFER FROM STATE TO STATE IN THE UNITED STATES. Clay's letter caught my interest right away. My husband and I are constantly "antiqueing" and buying things second-hand. At one auction, where there were no children surviving the couple; their entire life was laid out on several tables. You could view everything and realize that many things were purchased with care. I have no heirs. My husband's children aren't interested either. My largest fear is that some jerk will come in and clean out the house, not recognize my extensive bone bobbin collection, and pitch all of it into a dumpster. So, even though I have not made out a will, I am going to inventory everything in my lacemaking collection and pick a designated spot. An inventory is the first step towards creating a will and would become an integral part of it when it is finally time to disperse it all. Re: [lace] Tønder Lace
Dear Irene: I also took a course from Gunvor several years ago (Toender lace). For me, it was a turning point and I got a lot from the class. Gunvor did start with basics, and the class, all in varying levels, was handled effortlessly. Gunvor seemed to be able to identify those areas where hesitations occur and guide you into solving the problems untuitively. For me it was a wonderful class and helped me to build confidence in my abilities. Gunvor also kept appropriate time limits with different students, so you didn't have to wait 2-3 hours for her to get to your problem as has happened to me with a different teacher. At that time, I had also made a conscious decision to focus on just Torchon, Rosaline and Toender laces. I had been going into too many directions and confusing techniques, style issues, etc. In short: going and growing nowhere. Enjoy your course with Gunvor! I would take another class with her if the opportunity presented. Re: [lace] New year's resolution
Dear Friends: I would imagine this would be a wonderful and fun thing to do. I have often thought this could be set up. In fact, it might be nice to include others, such as embroiderers, piecers, etc. Our lacemaking numbers are few, and pretty spread out. I miss going to CT to Barb McGuire's house. When I was little (about 50 years ago), we lived in a rural area. My mother had a group of women that formed a club and they rotated houses each month. Every time my mother hosted, she made applesauce cake. I got to fill the sugar bowl and little green cream pitcher. We were pretty much asleep by the time they rolled in, but I do remember one woman who brought her accordian -- didn't sleep through that! Re: [lace] Future of American Textile History Museum in Lowell
Dear Friends: I have lived in Lowell, MA for 40 years, all of my adult life. It is a small, comfortable city with a population of about 150,000, less than 1 hour north of Boston and very much alive with ethnic diversity. Lowell wasn't just another mill city during the Industrial Revolution. It WAS the industrial revolution. It's system of caring for mill girls, harnessing hydropower, shaping values and reaping financial success was a model amongst other mill cities. Charles Dickens visited Lowell and called it the Venice of America because of the canal system and in comparing the mortality and morbidity to that of London, was truly amazed. It was the beacon that gave so many immigrants their chance at a better life. In the words of Drs. Peter and Mary Blewitt, Professors Emeriti at University of Massachusetts at Lowell, noted researchers and historians: "Cotton Was King". I can't tell you how important the American History Textile Museum is to our city. Unfortunately, it is still a city of immigrants, virtually 2 centuries later, and money is still difficult to find here. I have spent two winters volunteering my time as a lacemaker in the lobby for this museum. At the end of each time, the Director always took time to thank me for my time. I write to you, dear friends, to ask for any suggestions that you might have to keep this museum open and vital. There will, of course, be fundraisers. But you may have had experiences along the way with something of this type. I have compared this museum to those in the UK, as well as others and have always found the UK museums to be more personal with wax figures and tableaus. However, the desire to create a museum that underscores the impersonal and mechanical aura which embodied the textile industry, may also have been its demise. So please, e-mail me personally with any suggestions that you may have as I would like to do whatever I can to help this museum stay open. Thank you for posting this article Lorraine. Linda M. Dear Spiders: I also went to Prague, which was a long-term dream of mine and had the most wonderful time. The two weeks were followed by another wonderful week of lace-making with Jeannette Van Oord at her classes in Hyde Park, Doorn, Holland. I loved every minute of it, would go back in a heartbeat, and thought my class in Czech point ground was great. I shared a room with Dianne Zierold, my bus buddy for the tour was my friend, Jennie Gibbs, and we also shared facilities with Tamara D.
