[lace] Lace Guild Magazine - Christine Johnson

2014-05-03 Thread Jill Harward
Dear Spiders,

My Lace Guild magazine arrived yesterday and I was over the moon to see the
pattern and working diagram of Christine Johnson's Medieval Garden and for
which Christine was awarded the John Bull Trophy for 'lace by a lacemaker
who is not a teacher'.

I just had to write to thank Christine, who I think is a member of Arachne -
she will not know me, I am generally a 'Lurker' but I felt compelled to
write to Christine for being so generous in submitting this pattern to the
magazine and the time spent originally working out a coloured diagram of the
technical drawing. I first saw the photo of the finished lace on the back
of issue Number 151 and just 'drooled' over it and wished it was a pattern
available to us.

Well my wish came true as here it is, looking absolutely beautiful again in
the current issue. I have been floundering a bit for the past five or six
months due to some sad family circumstances and doing a little bits on
pieces already on the go but none of them seem to pull me in to get
enthusiastic again. All I keep saying to my friends is that I need
'inspiring' but had no idea what to do, that is until I opened the Lace
Magazine yesterday and Woo Hoo! I cannot possibly do any justice to your
amazing piece Christine but you have spurred me on and at last I have found
my 'get-up-and-go' and diving into my cupboard for a spare pillow, bobbins
and thread!! I cannot wait to get started J I guess this is also giving
advance warning to Jacquie Tinch, our lace tutor just what I will be turning
up with in class - she is probably turning a nice shade of puce at the
thought - only joking Jacquie, she relishes a challenge!

That's it and all that is left is to say once again a huge thanks to
Christine for unknowingly lifting my spirits.

Jill

[lace] The Knipplebrevet Magazine

2013-08-19 Thread Jill Harward
Dear Spiders,

Would any of you kind folk be able to put me in touch with someone who can
help me subscribe to the Knipplebrevet magazine please?  I am currently
working a lovely torchon Christmas table runner from the November 2006
edition and thoroughly enjoying it and because there are some other
interesting pieces in this same edition I would like to get it on a regular
basis.  Unfortunately I am missing the editorial page which would probably
have given me some of the details I need.

Thank you very much for your time and help :-)

 Hi All
For those of you living in the UK, have you all received your copy of
Lace
 this quarter?
I have just had a phone call from a friend saying that she and several
others
are still waiting for their copy, which reminded me that I hadn't
received
 mine either.
The Lace Guild say that they should all have arrived by now so will be
interested to know if you've received yours or not.
 Thanks

[lace] FW: The Kantcentrum is Safe :-)))

2009-12-15 Thread Jill Harward
Hello everyone,

I have just received an email from the organiser of our yearly trip to
Brugge, who is also a good friend of Anne-Marie and she says that she has
just got off the phone from Anne-Marie this morning who wanted to pass on
the good news:

THE KANTCENTRUM IS SAFE

Thank you all for filling in the petition and passing details on to others
of our persuasion. There are 3 new directors. the magazine will be
published but in a new format to include advertising, and Anne-Marie and
all her girls are dancing around like a dog with 2 tails. Of course there
are other details, like having to move into the old school building in
Ballestraat whilst the main building is renovated and decorated. Also there
are plans for an on-line shop. I am sure that there is a lot more, but
these are the main details.

I have been asked to thank you from Anne-Marie, in fact she said BIG THANKS,
so now I have duly passed on the message.

Also Anne-Marie mentioned that the previous director 'Dumon' is no longer
involved.

Please feel free to pass this on to anyone you know who will be interested -
good news always travels fast :- ). Our group, Mole Valley Lacemakers,
went to the Beguinage in October since the English Convent closed the guest
house side of things and it was absolutely great :- )) Now to hear the
Kantcentrum is safe just feels wonderful.

Best wishes

Jill

RE: [lace] RE:Seven Competition Visitors Award

2007-09-30 Thread Jill Harward
Well I really must come out of 'Lurk Dom' after Jacquie's lovely email which
started this string of emails to show my appreciation of the very kind words
about my piece of lace that I have been receiving as a result of her email.

With special thanks to Jacquie and Claire for their support during the time
it took to make it.

Having entered this competition a few times now, I honestly feel the best
bit about it is that it is stops being 'my' piece of lace but it becomes
more of a 'group' piece with everyone in our classes feeling involved having
seen the work evolving and with their offers of encouragement and tips.

I am very fortunate in having such great teachers and such good friends
within our lace-making family.

Best wishes
Jill

She certainly wouldn't. That's Jill for you. I am so pleased for her
it truly is a beautiful piece of lace and I aspire to creating work

FW: [lace] Only the Lonely Needlelace theory

2006-07-27 Thread Jill Harward
Oh Liz, a girl after my own heart! Yes, no matter how many pieces of lace
we may have on the go, we always seem to find a new piece we would like to
try - perhaps in a new book we have brought or often inspired by what we see
others tackling.

It is the enthusiasm and the endless options of what we can do that are so
stimulating with lace.

In fact, I saw a piece of lace being made at a course I was on last week and
would love to do.

Yes, you and Patty are right, and there is a piece of Milanese lace that is
three-quarters done and that would free up the pillow and enough bobbins
that I would need for the new piece..

..hmm, must go and find the pricking card and the pattern...!!

Moving onto the subject of the Needlelace, I am just in awe of how the 'old
lace' was made, especially those pieces with thread that is barely visible
to the eye. Considering the speed with which much of the lace had to be
made, in terms of lacemaking being a trade back then, the quality is
incredible. We are so lucky to be able to spend time perfecting (I say that
loosely in my case!)our lace and we now have so many, many different threads
etc to be able to try different techniques.

Best wishes
Jill

Jill, I think I would start with the piece that is closest to being
finished - so I could free up a pillow, and work through them that way.
Then I would have pillows for starting other projects - there is Always
something Urgent coming along, that just Has to be started immediately
:))

Alice, I really don't know if modern needlelace is better than the old
lace - but I think the Overall Effect is really what it is all about.
The Old lace was SO fine, that I really don't know how they made it!!
Errors, and inconsistancies show up more in the modern, coarser lace - I can

tell you that!!! :)

out into bloom - the little darlings!!! :)

Hi Patty and all :-)

Great idea to come out to play on Arachne:-)

I have been a lurker for ages due to very long and unsociable working hours
but as of three weeks ago, I gave up my job (yippee) and I aim to try and
finish a few pieces of lace that have been on the go for some time - years
in fact.

This new found freedom is really exciting and I have started getting all my
pillows out to remind myself what I need to do

Well, what a shock, I had not realised what I had ..4 pieces of
Milanese,1 piece of Paris Ground, 4 pieces of Binche, 1 piece of Flanders
and 1 piece of Torchon I think that is it but I have not made it to
the back of my (large!) cupboard to see if there are anymore in there!!

I am guilty that every time my friends and I went on a lace course, I never
had a free pillow, there was always something on the go that I did not want
to cut off, so I would buy another pillow!!! Vbg That all has to stop
now of course and I need to finish something.

The thing is, what to chose first :0) I am going to enjoy this but sadly,
I must remember that I have to find another job, albeit one which allows me
to have a little bit of a life to do my lace etc.

Isn't lace just the best thing to get involved with :-)

Best wishes
Jill
