[lace] bobbin lace is like chess

2013-12-12 Thread Rebecca Mikkelsen
Lorelei posted that she compares learning bobbin lace to woodcarving. I
compare learning bobbin lace to chess. In one chess lesson you can learn the
basic moves and play a simple game of chess, but it takes a lifetime to master
the game. I think bobbin lace is like that.

[lace] RE: caring for needles

2013-07-24 Thread Rebecca Mikkelsen
I live in the United States in the southwest so I don't have a problem with
rusting needles, pins, scissors, etc., but you might try silica gel desiccant
packets. Save them from products you buy (they are always inside shoes), buy
pre-made packets, or make your own. Buy some desiccant in one of those
containers you put in your closet. Make small pouches out of a breathable
fabric and fill them with the desiccant.

[lace] RE: SLC convention

2013-04-22 Thread Rebecca Mikkelsen
Thank you, Janice, for the great information! As this is the first convention
I have attended, I don't know what to expect and feel a bit lost when needing
answers to questions.

And now for a crass commercial announcement . . .Another event that
convention attendees may enjoy is Bach's Missa Solemnis which will be
performed at the Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City on Tuesday
night (there is a tour of the Cathedral scheduled for Wednesday). I realize
that this is the same night as the annual general
meeting, but perhaps there
is someone interested in going to this
concert. The choir is the American
Festival Chorus, a northern Utah
choir, conducted by Dr. Craig Jessop who
retired from directing the
Mormon Tabernacle Choir after 8 years and promptly
went the Utah State
University where he founded the American Festival Chorus
and become Dean of
the College of Arts. I have been performing with the choir
since its
inception 5 years ago. For those choral music geeks out there,
it may be
interesting to compare the American Festival Chorus at the
Cathedral
under Dr. Jessop, former Tabernacle choir director, to Dr. Mac
Wilberg,
present director of the Tabernacle choir in the Tabernacle. Both
choirs are made up of volunteers.

 Hi Rebecca,
No-one has been informed that they have the class of their choice yet. If
someone has been contacted by the Registrar, it is usually to ask what their
second choice may be because their first choice class is full. If they
then
assume they will get their second choice, they are probably correct. Some
members in the host group of Beehive Lacers may have been told by their
committee that their registration is okay, but that is not official yet. No
decisions will be made about final placements until the end of May.
Registrations are still coming in, although slower than in the initial
period
and we are hoping to be able to provide as many classes as we offered in the
 Bulletin.

Please do not assume that classes are full or cancelled, take a chance and
send
in your registration and come and join us in Salt Lake City where we hope to
provide everyone with great classes and another wonderful convention
experience,
plus the chance to see and hear the Tabernacle Choir rehearsal in the
 Tabernacle.

[lace] RE: IOLI convention registration

2013-04-19 Thread Rebecca Mikkelsen
I was speaking to a fellow lacemaker a few days ago and she said she and her
sister already know what classes they are taking. I sent in my registration
before Feb 1 and my check was cashed in February, but I have yet to hear about
the classes I will be taking. When can I expect to find out?

Rebecca in Utah

I also want to take this opportunity to mention the upcoming IOLI
convention,
and I hope I don't offend anyone by this. Some classes are already filled
to
capacity, such as those taught by Louise Colgan, Ulrike Voelker, and Allie
Marguccio but we still have some spaces with Anny Noben Slegers, Jean
Leader,
Holly van Sciver and many other teachers. Don't think you are too late in
registering as I am sure Brenda Glenn, Registrar, will be able to place you
in a
class, and maybe one that you might have thought was already filled.

For those of you who are waiting anxiously to know what your classes are, we
are
still working hard on placements. If your check has been cashed, you know
that
 it was received by Brenda.

[lace] re: Lace Bombing in SLC for convention

2013-01-12 Thread Rebecca Mikkelsen
Hey, Robin! I'll lace bomb with you! Last night I was looking through the
Kaethe and Jules Kliot book Bobbin Lace: Form by the Twisting of Cords to
get inspiration for just this kind of thing. I was thinking how cool it
would be to have a long rod with heavy twine or rope attached to it (much as
one would start a macrame project) and let lacers weave the cords, free form,
to make a big hanging.
Rebecca in Northern Utah

With IOLI's conference being near me I so wished I could get some yarn
bombers or lace people to put stuff up in Salt Lake City, but I can't seem
to get a group going on it *shrug* I'm betting at some point there will be
Lace bombers, but for now we sit quietly and work.

[lace] Quintin Matsys painting of girl with lace pillow

2012-02-25 Thread Rebecca Mikkelsen
I was reading the book Point and Pillow Lace by Mary Sharp (printed in 1905)
and she mentions a painting by Quintin Matsys (1466-1529) of a girl with a
lace pillow as proof that bobbin lace existed in Belgium as early as the end
of the 15th c. I searched the internet and could not find this picture. Have
any of you seen it?

2012-01-04 Thread Rebecca Mikkelsen
I have just arranged for free space at a nearby historical park. In the
winter and inclement days we will make lace in the visitor's center and in the
summer we will make lace in the pioneer village. Since I have demonstrated
at the park in the past, they were willing to let me have the space.

I also have some unused basement space that I am presently redecorating to
make it habitable for lace making.

[lace] Re: Unwritten Rules - Spangling

2010-09-21 Thread Rebecca Mikkelsen
My preferred spangling method is to use this beading wire with crimp beads. I
highly recommend it. The beading wire does not break and the spangles do not
distort.

There are different vendors and you can get it in varying thicknesses, but
this is a popular US vendor.  It is designed to take quite a bit of abuse;
used for heavier jewelry for instance (and fine), then is crimped with crimp
beads (which may be very helpful when spangling) and tied, etc. to add
