It does seem that my right hand has a tendency to push the pricking to the left. It is nice to be making lace again, as I was visiting in my husband's country for several weeks and did not have a lace pillow with me. All of the postings regarding sewing machine history have been very interesting. Being that I am not familiar with lace making machines, I enjoy reading the postings. As a young teenager, I learned to sew using a Singer Featherweight. During my many years of sewing, I've used a variety of new machines and not-so-new machines. My current favorites are a new Brother PQ1500 and a 30-year old Bernina. But, I've always remembered the old Singer that I used long ago. Recenty I was able to purchase a Singer Featherweight in near mint condition. The friend who got it for me has always maintained that I needed to start a collection of something. While looking for light bulbs at a home building supply store, I was amazed to find a few different types of full spectrum lights and light bulbs. Now that I have been using a bulb and a desk light that were purchased from the store, I can honestly say that they work very every bit as nicely as the expensive Ott bulbs. Through some internet research, it seems that the varieties that I found produce the same type of light as Ott bulbs. The purchases that I made were far less expensive than Ott bulbs, but not as inexpensive as regular bulbs. In response to a request that was posted, I participated in Lenka's Punta de Espana wire lace class, which was what I'd hoped for. I found the class to be informative, interesting, pleasant, motivating and creative. In the event that such a class were to be offered again, I would suggest taking it. Wire was actually used in both of my classes, though in different mediums. My second class was Louise Colgan's Advanced 3-D Milanese class, of which I could say numerous positive statments, as well. Being that plenty of suggestions have been offered regarding internet/computer usage in Denver, I have other suggestions. While my sons would also suffer withdrawal symptoms if deprived of internet usage, we have always found interesting activities that we have all enjoyed. During the summer, numerous bike shops in the ski resort areas provide bike rentals for minimal charges. Being able to ride around the towns and down ski runs (a bit more challenging) is wonderful. Riding the ski lifts (very inexpensive in the summer) provide photo opportunities. My sons also used the time to take numerous photos which they posted on their web pages. One can also participate in water sports, go to the mint in downtown Denver, and numerous other activities. Really, there is not a shortage of activities for a person of any age. In recent postings to Arachne there has been considerable information pertaining to the ages of US lace makers, particularly ages of those attending the IOLI conference. Being the youngest of my local guild, and generally one of the younger lace makers (I am not that young, as my younger son is going off to university this fall), I have received more than my fair share of joking about my age, etc. Personally, I don't feel that lace making is an expensive hobby. (I have friends who regularly spend far greater amounts of money in just one day of shopping at a mall.) It's only the attendance at conventions that requires greater expenditures. But, that leads to my question. Are there greater numbers of lace makers of varying ages in coutries, other than the US? What number of those lace makers attends lace fairs and and conventions? My point of view is in agreement with most of the people who have posted. I feel that it's best to use the true pronunciation of the name of a lace, and make my best attempt to do so. I certainly know how it feels to have my name mispronounced as it has been most of my life. While I naturally use the American pronunciation of "Sylvie," people still instist on calling me "Sylvia," which is not my name. Of course, my last name is utterly impossible for most to pronounce. During car trips, I greatly enjoy using an 18 inch Toustou cookie pillow on my lap. Its weight keeps it in place and the size is appropriate for working on small motifs or wire lace. My husband and I made a small roller pillow which also works well in the car, though I find that I must occasionally hold on to bobbins that move a little too much. I've not used travel bobbins yet. When I first started to make Milanses bobbin lace, my husband was finally impressed with my lace saying that it was nice to see some colors. While my color blind husband has most likely been color trained, he is unsure of most of the colors I use in Milanese lace. My husband, I think, finds the designs of my Milanese and wire lace to be more interesting than other laces, so perhaps it wasn't necessarily the colors. In daily life, being color blind has not been a problem. Occasionally, as my husband does some wiring, I am called upon to label colors of wires for him. On a more interesting note, I have a new student who is just learning to speak English. In addition to being vision impaired, I've been told that he doesn't see any colors at all. Being that I am a highly visual instructor, it's necessary to find other creative methods of instruction. Tamara's suggestion of perhaps limiting patterns to the use of just a few colors in addition to types of lines might be the best compromise. Helen and Arachne members, I quite agree with you, in that wire is a very nice medium for making bobbin lace. While I unfortunately didn't take one of Lenka's classes, several of my lace friends did. With my friends' help, reading, and having talked to Lenka, I am really enjoying making wire lace. My recently finished projects include a bracelet, choker, an egg, and Lenka's mermaid. Yesterday a wire lace book arrived, which I had ordered from Canada. While I must wait a few days to start, I look foward to my next wire lace project.
