RE: [lace] Bedford Hangings

2020-02-04 Thread brido11
Dear All,

I never really wrote much about hanging bobbins as it was so well covered by a
web page that we had many years ago (I am afraid my memory can not recall it).
It was a fabulous site, but I do not think it was ever archived (great shame.)

The other reason was that my great bobbin friend knew far more about them than
I did!! I did contribute something on hanging on that site.

Below is the entry in the Dictionary (www.brianlemin.com )

hanging bobbin
A bobbin that bears an inscription commemorating the hanging of a criminal.
There were seven hangings recorded by inscriptions on bobbins. Matthias and
William Lilley 1829. Sarah Dazeley 1843, Joseph Castle 1860, Franz Muller 1864,
William Worsley 1868. William Bull 1871, Miles Wetherall 1868. These do not
come up for sale often and are thus rather expensive though they are not as
well turned as many other bobbins.

We had no room to tell you more.

I had my birthday yesterday and despite everyone saying how well I looked, it
did not improve my memory!! It is a bit of a worry.

Brian

I think this is the link you’re wondering about :
https://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/msg54056.html

The message thread is in the archives. Search “Mrs. Dazley hanging bobbins”.
It’s from January this year. Started with Brian’s messages about the existence
of bobbins commemorating hangings and their rarity. Certainly a curiosity.

[lace] Bedford Hangings

2020-02-03 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Thank you for this very interesting article. I went to school next door to the
Bedford Jail! I remember that they had a magnificent wisteria climbing over
the inside wall, - which was beautiful when in full bloom, =- but was only
seen by “Outsiders” when the large front gates were opened to allow
traffic in or out!

When we were in the Upstairs Science room, we were about on a level with the
top of the outer wall of the prison, and there were small windows, in cells, -
one of which had a broken pane of glass, and every now and again – when the
teacher was turned away and writing on the board, - a hand would come through
the hole, and wave to us!! We often got into trouble by waving back!!

Isn’t it silly – the things you remember :)
I did not know of the history of these hangings at the gaol, until much more
recent times! To us kids, - it was the town gaol, and that was that!! We had
a church on the other side of the school

I have a Worsley hanging bobbin – well, I have passed it on to my Daughter,
now, but it came to me though my Grandmother, and belonged to my Great
Grandmother, - both Lacemakers (of course!)
I sent Brian a photo of it some time ago for his Virtual Collection.
