Thanks to Liz for this information which gives more clues. I have what I suspect could be the English equivalent of the edition that Lucie has access to. For those trying to date the pocket versions, they just do not appear to have the same identifying marks as the larger sized editions so the dating information provided on the list doesn't help. Narrowing it down by # of copies seems to be as much as anyone has been able to do. RE: [lace] Dillmont again - to Liz Pass in Poole, Dorset
Hello Lucie ( and Lynn) From your description, it appears that you have a French edition. The earliest French edition that I have details for was dated Oct 1909, when 630,000 copies had been printed. I don't have the number of pages for this one, which is the larger size, but the 1924 pocket size contained 828. So it appears that your book predates 1909. I keep looking for more clues to dates - the best so far was a English version which had a handwritten inscription - Holmes, Windermere, 1895. I believe the first book was published in 1886. Hope this helps a bit, Liz -Original Message- From: owner-l...@arachne.com [mailto:owner-l...@arachne.com] On Behalf Of lucie...@uottawa.ca Sent: 14 October 2009 19:08 To: lace@arachne.com Subject: [lace] Dillmont again - to Liz Pass in Poole, Dorset Dear Liz, maybe you can help me date my Therese de Dillmont, Encyclopedie de Ouvrages des Dames. Hi Liz, As I see that you are gathering info from other countries too... here is mine from a Spanish version of the book: It has the number 631, and the copyright for this Spanish edition is from 1975. It also says 1,335,000 copies published, and has 832 pages plus index and coloured pictures of laces, and some history of DMC. I have bought it a few years ago. It measures 23,5 x 15,5 cm. I like this thread. Really interesting. And the book is beautiful. But... has anyone tried to learn how to make bobbin lace following the instructions of this book? Well, I haven't. But it seems quite difficult to me. Diagrams are a great help nowadays! Hi Everyone, My copy is an English pocket edition, 33/4 by 55/8inches (9.5cm x14cm). It has 928, so was published in September 1928. There were 1,120,00 copies issued, 811 pages before all the ads and the contents. Eve Poole, Dorset, UK Elizabeth Pass wrote: Hello Diana, If your book has the number 630, it was published in June 1930. Check that it also says 1,260,000 copies published and has 813 pages. It seems that many book sellers had their own business details on the cover. One of mine comes from WH Smith, the other has no further details on it. I've been collating these books for some years and so far have established that there were 18 editions in English covering the years 1895 (handwritten by the first owner) up to 1955. I've also got a modern reprint and I've details of 5 French editions and 2 German. If anyone has the Encyclopedia of Needlework by Th. de Dillmont and wants to send to send me the details, I'd like to know the number at the bottom on the reverse of the title page, the number of copies published and the number of pages as well as the size. There was a 'pocket' edition and another twice the size. If there are any other details such as the bookseller, I'd be interested in that too. Hi Liz Yes mine has the 1,260,000 quoted. I have another copy somewhere but wouldn't know where to begin the search ;o( Eureka - found it quite easily. This is in a slightly larger format and is numbered 739 - 1,540,000. It has a label inside for D.M.C. Thread Co.Ltd., 299 Kennington Road, London S.E.11. Thank you for the info. Sh 3- French Edition . . . Fr 3.75 German Edition . . . Mk 3- There is no number at the bottom of that page I made a note, from a previous Arachne discussion that it was printed in Dornash until 1923 and after that in Mulhouse. I paid 13.00 GBP for it, probably about 25 years ago.
