Re: [lace] Ebay -- lace making thimble

2003-11-29 Thread Ruth Budge
In my humble opinion, it just looks like an ordinary sewing thimble - although
I *think* I can see a "splodge" on the top flat surface of the thimble which
might just indicate that the "pin-pusher" part of a true lacemaker's thimble
has been removed or fell out (as one did recently on one of my lacemaker's
thimbles!)

A friend sent me this item from Ebay. (As usual, make certain you paste it
into your browser as one line if it is coming to you as two lines.) Any
opinions out there about the label on this item?

Re: [lace] Ebay -- lace making thimble

2003-11-28 Thread Clay Blackwell
I have watched this thimble for a couple of weeks... it
didn't sell during its first "outing", and is reposted (IF I
remember correctly...). At any rate, I think its claim to
lacemaking is tenuous at best... Except for the specialty
thimble which has been recently discussed on this list
(thimble with a pusher attached...), I haven't really been
aware of a need for a thimble exclusive to lacemaking. And
when I did have a need (inadequately pricked pricking which
means I should have used a larger needle...) I used the
(also previously mentioned...) "Thimble-its" which saved the
day. I learned my lesson, and now no longer need a thimble.

I think the seller may be banking on the term "lacemaking".

[lace] Ebay -- lace making thimble

2003-11-28 Thread Margot Walker
The text says 'We understand these longer thimblesĀ are used for
lacemaking.' Is this true? First I've heard of it - why would a
lacemaker need a longer thimble than a seamstress or an embroiderer?

2003-11-28 Thread Adele Shaak
Hmmm...as always, I'm taking the eBay description with a grain of salt.
It may be that the person who used this thimble used it to make lace
(probably needle lace) but it is just a regular decorated sewing
thimble, possibly late Victorian (?). The "coat of arms" could be the
crest of a school or a guild. Also, souvenir sewing thimbles decorated
with crests were sold everywhere (and still are, like spoons, in a lot
of places), so it could equally well be a geographic crest - (like the
town or province/state/county you bought the souvenir in).
