[lace] Happy Christmas greetings

2020-12-17 Thread Elizabeth Ligeti
Just a line to wish everyone the Compliments of the Season. (depending on your
beliefs, and being Politically Correct!)
Happy Christmas to those who celebrate it.

I Love that quote, Elena, “a ship is sooner rigged by far, than a
gentlewoman made ready.”

We are supposed to be in summer, here in Melbourne, Oz, but it is a chilly,
grey, damp day today. We need the rain, so are not complaining, but I actually
needed a windcheater top on when we went shopping this morning. I wore my
Shuttlebirds one that I bought last year – navy blue, with white snowflakes
printed all over the front!!! Well, one can Dream of white Christmases!!
I am busy tatting, and have made a few Split ring snowflakes mounted in fine
wire bangles, and they have been welcomed to hang on Xmas trees around here!!
The Blue Ice thread from Handy Hands, size 340 seems to work up nicely and
then the Snowflake size seems to fit the bangle. Karen Bovard’s patterns, of
course. They work up so well.

Regards from Liz. L.

Re: [lace] Happy Christmas

2014-12-28 Thread Beth Marshall

Hi all

Luton Museum brought out a new edition of the book fairly recently (
late 2012), with new high-quality digital photographs of the samples -
beautiful eye candy for any lacemaker, and an inspiration for the bucks
point makers.

I ordered mine directly from the Luton Museums' website - it's still
available there
https://www.lutonculture.com/shop/shop/books-and-media/the-lace-dealers-pattern-book/

hope all those who celebrate it have had a wonderful Christmas - I've
even managed to find time for a bit of lace during the break, so
Salamander no. 3 (in tropical lagoon camouflage) is ready to come of the
pillow.

Happy New Year 2015 - here's hoping we all have time for lace

Hi, Sue

The Luton Museum's Lace Dealer's Pattern Book is a series of pages to which
snippets of lace are attached. The dealer would show these pieces, produced by the women
that worked for him, and the customer would pick the one she wanted and tell how many
yards (or pieces, if it's a motif). Then the dealer would order that amount from the
woman who specialized in that pattern.

The one at the Luton Museum got some fame when it was raising money to have the
book refurbished. They wanted to remount the lace pieces on archival board.
Arachne was one of the donors, by holding a raffle of prizes donated by
members. After the re-mounting, the museum had a book made of photographs of
the pages.

Hi, Sue

Sounds like the clock was a wonderful work of love and family. How wonderful
that your lace was the right size for it. Sounds like a beautiful design.

the women that worked for him, and the customer would pick the one she wanted
and tell how many yards (or pieces, if it's a motif). Then the dealer would
order that amount from the woman who specialized in that pattern.

There are other lace dealer's pattern books around, in museums and private
collections (I've even seen some on auction at ebay). The one at the Luton
Museum got some fame when it was raising money to have the book refurbished.
They wanted to remount the lace pieces on archival board. Arachne was one of

[lace] Happy Christmas

2014-12-26 Thread Sue
Happy Christmas and wishing you all you wish for yourselves in 2015. I woke
yesterday full of cold and with a sore throat, so its been a bit of a
challenge. But,I got to play at being a fly on the wall from the UK to Canada
to see the opening of a special gift. My nephew made his Mother (my sister) a
clock body, he bought the clock movement face and glass which was German made
and fitted inside a piece of my lace. I got to see her open the present and
take in all the significance which she did very quickly. The Wood had been
bought by herself and her Husband before he died in 2007 of Cancer, turned by
their son and made into a clock for her to use in her home. She was
delighted with it. The lace represented all 6 of us siblings who were born
and brought up in Luton. The lace pattern was bought by me in Luton Museum,
and had 6 pattern repeats with hearts towards the centre and made by me as a
learning piece around 2004, so has been sitting waiting for a home for all
that time. My sister always insists that we 6 plus parents when they were
both alive did a photo call at events and now of course they have become
special, our Mum is still alive and joins the gathering as we did in March for
her 90th birthday when we all donned witches hats for a different look. Great
day, good photos.

Of course I have a question for some of you with the knowledge. The pattern I
bought and used was taken from the Lace Dealers handbook (now have I got that
quote right?) and I am going to send her the paperwork to keep with the clock
for the future. But of course she will ask me to explain that more and I
cant. Does that mean it was a pattern in a book which people might choose to
have made for a particular reason. What I think I probably need to send her
is a potted history not books and loads of stuff, just enough to make it
interesting.
Many thanks all for another amazing year.
Good luck to you all in the new year.

[lace] Happy Christmas.....

2014-12-24 Thread nestalace . carol
To all  Arachnids,

I do hope you all have a happy Christmas, and a healthy and happy, peaceful and
prosperous New Year - I am taking my Mum off to Suffolk (UK) this afternoon, so
we can spend Christmas Day with my son - a chef! - and his family, and Boxing
Day with my daughter and her family - the littlest grandchild will be five
years of age on Boxing Day, so what a super day we will have!    But - I
suppose there is always a down-side!     I have grown a beautiful stye on my
eye, so I do not look too wonderful - please keep your fingers crossed that it
disappears quickly!!

However, a wonderful Christmas to you all, and may your pins never bend - I
wonder how many of us will be able to make lace over the holiday ...

All best wishes to you all,

Carol - in North Norfolk UK - soon to be in Suffolk UK.

Well, I have just had a walk along the main surf beach here, - and had a
paddle in the sea!! Water was reasonable for the time of year. I am not a
good enough swimmer to tackle a swim, though! I am not that daft!!! :)
there were some surfers out there, enjoying it!

I hpope you all have survived the bad storms and terrible weather alright.
We have seen some TV footage of the nasty storms around the world.

Stay safe, and stay well.

[lace] Happy Christmas

2007-12-21 Thread Gray, Alison J
Dear Arachneans

I shall be too busy over the next few days or so to look at my emails,
so I would like this opportunity to wish all of you a very happy
Christmas and a lace filled New Year.

I hope I can find some time to do some lace over the holiday, and if
you're like me, struggling to find the time to actually do any lace, I
hope you do too.

But whatever you do, have a lovely time.
