There must be hundreds of American subscribers to Arachne who belong to IOLI. I don't know, because there are so many lurkers, who do not write, respond, or even ask questions. They do not seem to know that printed material presented on Arachne and in our various Guild publications is a gift.
It is important that Lace Bulletins be useful far into the future for researchers. Researchers need to consult primary sources - original books being of most importance. It is not wise to reuse a Bibliography that someone else compiled without verifying it is correct! There are other interesting subjects. If we do not make it easy to do research, Lace will not be researched! You may wish to add the following notes to your copies of the IOLI Spring 2014 Bulletin AND to your local Lace group's copies, so that if they fall into the hands of future Lace scholars, the information will be easier to use. These notes only relate to books referenced in Bibliographies at the end of articles in the IOLI Bulletin, Volume 34, Number 3 (Photo of South American nun on the cover). 1. Page 15 - Ruth Bean's 1983 edition of Le Pompe should read ISBN 0 903585 16 2. The 2 is missing. You might like to add after Book 1 ", plus selected pages from Book 2." 2. Page 15 - Burkard entry is OK. Might add "One of 3 books in a boxed set." 3. Page 15 - Levey's Victoria and Albert book reference is OK. 4. Page 15 - Dye's book entry may need correction: ISBN is printed in book as 978 0 9553223 5 8, but as 3 4 (at the end) in IOLI Bulletin. Publisher Jean Leader has been consulted. She says Gil Dye will probably issue an Errata (correction to be appended to a book or books) for Books 2 and 3 in this series. That means maybe the IOLI Bulletin's ISBN number is OK. These are two very busy lace experts who can always be relied on to set things right. (You might like to add ", p. 34" at the end for the frogging reference.) 5. Page 20 - For "Lessons in Bobbin Lacemaking", there is room to write "Dover edition; originally Scribner's" vertically in the white space of fold. (Original publisher was Scribner's in both hard back and soft cover editions, and title was different: "Bobbin Lacemaking". Contents of all 3 versions is the same.) 6. Page 21 - Authors of "Bobbin Lace of Peniche" are Janne L. G. Hill and Graça Maria Ramos. Cross out Barbara Fay as author. Fay is the publisher, and a book dealer in Germany. There is white vertical space to make the correction. 7. Page 23 - First book's author is Therle Hughes, not Hughs (famous in the antiques world). 8. Page 23 - Last book's title should be RSN Stumpwork (for Royal School of Needlework), not RNS Stumpwork.
