I wouldn't say it's too long, bobbins in different length exist. But there 
isn't clear which is the head of the bobbin, both ends look equal.And where is 
space for thread? It's a lovely stilted piece of wood, I guess, but not a 
bobbin.

It may be just a practice piece for a turner.  At 5" it would equate to 5 Feet
in doll house scale ( rather tall staircase rail). Lorri

I'm in complete agreement with you, Brenda.   The size would have been 
right for the head or foot board of a doll house bed, 1/12 scale.

- assuming that the ruler is in inches. It's more likely to be a spindle
