Another title suitable for children (and adults who want to know more about bobbin lace or what's it like to have children on the Autistic Spectrum,) is Lisa and the lacemaker - An Asperger adventure by Kathy Hoopmann. Set in Australia, Lisa and a friend discover a derelict hut in the backyard and the story goes on from there. The lacemaking content is very accurate, and apart from the photo on the cover, (a piece of Chinese machine tape lace,) is all about bobbin lace. Those of you who have worked with Aspergers children will recognise the signs which are skilfully woven into the story. Contact me if you want more details. [lace] Inspiration
All of the recent messages about young lacemakers got me thinking...and inspired. It's all about going public with lace. Most of my lacemaking is done during my lunch hour. In the summer I take it and sit in the reading garden of the Library. I've enjoyed the comments and conversations the lacemaking has engendered. The Library is my lunchtime refuge even in the cold weather. I usually sit in the Literature department where the windows are big and the light is perfect. I think it's time for a move up to the Children's department, where the windows are just as big and the light is just as perfect. I spent some time today making up a small brochure called WHAT IS BOBBIN LACE? and was thinking of bringing a small pillow set up with the fish pattern that Chris mentioned. There are always parents and kids there during the day, and it might be fun. I've been talking to the head of the Science and Technology department, which is where the lace books are housed. She's new to the Library and has been thinking about picking a subject, showcasing books in their collection, and having people come in who do the different crafts. She has my name and e-mail address for when she does fiber arts. I will also talk to the Children's librarian and see if they have any sort of craft demonstrations. Thanks for the inspiration, everyone. I just wish I had more time. Hi Jane, Have recently upgraded the computer and then had problems accessing the internet, so only just getting round to reading some of the 300 odd emails. Anyway regarding photographs of snowflakes. Dover have collected 72 of the best plates (850 photos, but not all snowflakes) and included them in one of their pictorial archive books - ie you can use up to 10 designs in graphic and crafts applications free and without any special permission. Hi All, Here's some inspiration for you all! Snowflake Bentley is a Vermonter who photographed snowflakes around 1900. According to the website he's the one who said no two snowflakes are alike. Anyway, these have been out in book form for a long time but there was an article in the paper today saying some of them are on the web! I've used his photos to design cutwork snowflakes. I usually start drawing the basic shape and then the lace techniques take over. The images are copyrighted but not the inspiration. Here's the Snowflake Bentley page: http://informatics.buffalo.edu/faculty/abbas/bms/ This goes directly to the snowflakes: http://informatics.buffalo.edu/faculty/abbas/bms/collection.asp He's a fascinating guy. And I guess if the photographs can't be in a Vermont museum then Buffalo is an appropriate place - the average snowfall (1884-2004) is 97 (242.5 cm if I got that right). That's 8'1 - Whew! That Lake Effect is pretty powerful! Happy Inspiration! Jane in Vermont, USA happy to look in a book of snowflakes and have none outside right now G.
