Now that this subject is almost exhausted, can I say that I still use a
generic CAD program - EasyCad.

Likewise, I use FastCad - when we were discussing, years ago, (?1995/6)
designing lace on the computer Rosanne (I think) was promoting the idea
of designing with EasyCad - so I asked DH whether it would be expensive
to buy a copy, to which he replied, why bother, when we've already got
its big brother? - so as I was struggling with a Bucks design (drawing
even curves by hand is not my strong point) at the time I got the
manuals out and started reading, worked through its tutorials and have
been using it ever since. For torchon patterns, I still prefer sitting
with my feet up on the sofa with graph paper and pencil to work them
out, then transfer to the computer so that I can print off however many
copies I need.

I must say that reading all the different points of view about this subject
has been really interesting and useful.
It is a wonder place to get this info which is just not available anywhere
else, :-)

Re: [lace] Lace Drafting on Computer

Hi Sue and everyone

Yes, we can do lace design on drawing programs other than the
dedicated (hobby) software. It is also possible to use the drawing
tools in Word, for instance. The resulting files tend to be very large
though, which I found out when someone sent me one by e-mail. However,
I was mighty impressed - she was new to lace, and reinforced her
beginning lessons by drawing a pattern from them (including a
bookmark!)

An advantage to the hobby software over a generic drawing program, if
computer space is an issue, is the files are usually quite small, and
you can reduce their size further, after many edits, without losing
the quality of the pattern (in Easy Lace it is the 'reduce lace stitch
memory' option in Tools).

My old laptop doesn't have much space, but there is room for the lace
design program. Then if the need arises, I can take the laptop to a
lace meeting e.g. if giving a talk ( which actually I haven't yet
done, but there's always the possibility!)

[lace] Lace Drafting on Computer

2006-07-09 Thread Christine Johnson
Hi everyone,
Now that this subject is almost exhausted, can I say that I still use a
generic CAD program - EasyCad. I started using a DOS version of it well
before there were specific programs for lacemakers. I bought the windows
version 5 or 6 years ago for about the same price as Lace Designer Gold (or
whatever incarnation was in use then). It is probably harder to learn to use
because it isn't lace specific, but then no one has made the decisions for
me as to how I will do particular lace-related tasks, so there is a lot more
flexibility. I also use it to draw house plans, filet crochet patterns and
whatever else I fancy.
I used to rough out what I wanted to do onto graph paper first, but then I
also used to draft text roughly on paper first before using a word
processing program to type up the almost-final version. Now I work directly
on the computer unless I hit an insoluble problem - solve on paper, then
back to the computer.
