[lace] new lacemakers

2010-06-22 Thread Janice Blair
Last Saturday I taught what was supposed to be a continuation bobbin lace class
at my guild, but we decided to throw it open to new people and we advertised it
locally near the library where we meet. We got five new people trying their
hand at it and I think we have four new lacemakers. The other lady really only
came to accompany her friend, but who knows maybe she will come again. I heard
from three of the beginners, one had come to the end of the torchon bookmark on
Sunday and wanted to know how to finish it. I was going to demonstrate that
but the class took longer than expected.

It was a difficult class for beginners as we started with a torchon ground
(tcpintc) diamond and then went into cloth stitch (CTC) and whole stitch (CTCT)
fans divided by torchon ground. Most of them managed to get two or three
repeats done during the class time. I had lots of help from other guild
members who sat alongside the beginners and a number of our members also made
the bookmark as their continuation class. One person paid her dues and we hope
to see the others back again next month, especially as we rented them our kits
with a returnable deposit.

When we first arrived at the library we had a panic as they were holding a book
sale and all our tables were out on the grass covered with books. The library
staff were very good and scoured the library for tables we could use for the
class and then they nicely returned our rent money for the day. We had about
24 people to accommodate and we were sat around about 8 tables of different
sizes and heights and the air conditioning had not been turned on. Saturday
topped 90 degrees with humidity. You could have poured me out of the room in
the afternoon!

It is a List of Australian Lace Makers - that way we don't have to concern
ourselves with misunderstanding of slang :)

[lace] New Lacemakers

2005-10-12 Thread David Collyer

Dear Friends,
Last week I completed teaching another class in Lace Making for Beginners
here in Ballarat. I duly gave each of the students info on joining Gumnuts
and arachne so I'm hoping that soon we shall hear from:-

Ina in Ballan; Lynn and Judith from Bacchus Marsh and Dawn from Ararat

All were happily half way down the first bookmark in Rosemary Shepherd's
book at the end of the course, and loving it.

2 weeks before that I taught a class in tatting and we now have 3 new real
Tatting Ladies in Ballarat.
I also managed to teach my older sister Raie SEMMENS in Hobart, Tasmania,
via the phone and email. She has just returned from 12 weeks overseas with
some completed pieces!

It's a nice feeling :)

David in Ballarat
