RE: Re[2]: [lace] Our mail list software
Sue I think part of the problem with facebook as a host is their software itself. It doesn't encourage lengthy answers. I wrote a whole page on an unrelated subject and their software said they would make it invisible to others after 24 hours. I think there are lots of people on facebook lace groups simple because facebook has so many members. You can reach a very large number of potential participants because of that. Never might that the quality of communication is severely limited. Ning has lots of good features. Its primary limitation is that they want a hosting fee every year. I have found a way to deal with that, but I would rather not have to. Hello Elena and everyone Maybe that conversation made it to the list archives. For anyone wanting to check out Arachne messages history, the archives are here https://www.mail-archive.com/lace@arachne.com/ > On Thu, Apr 2, 2020 at 9:17 AM Elena Kanagy-Loux wrote: > ...For example, Devon described a discussion that happened once > on Arachne debating whether Communism or Democracy were better for > lacemakers. Re: Re[2]: [lace] Our mail list software
Dear all, As much as it would definitely be nice to have the ability to add photos etc to Arachne posts, I have to say there is something I like about the old school format of this list. With so many platforms oversaturated with photos these days, it can be refreshing to be limited to bare-bones text. Devon and I had a discussion once about how the text-only format of Arachne encourages more in-depth theoretical conversations that tend to happen in Bobbin lace Facebook groups, where most often people post photos of their work and receive comments of praise, but it doesn't foster long conversations. For example, Devon described a discussion that happened once on Arachne debating whether Communism or Democracy were better for lacemakers. However, I don't disagree with the idea of changing platforms, if we could figure out how to do it smoothly. My only concern is less tech-savvy members being left behind. I'd also like to float the idea of an Arachne "Zoom" meet up - the video meeting chat platform, if anyone is interested. We had a Brooklyn Lace Guild meeting on Zoom and it was great fun to see each other. I just hope that during the the global shutdown we can at least have more discussions here online, wherever that may be! Stay well everyone! Re[2]: [lace] Our mail list software
Apparently both Pierre and Dagmar achieved writing an email to arachne! Yes, it's as simple as writing an email to lace@arachne.com However as you have noted, we are limited to text (not even French accents on Pierre's surname come through) and cannot post photos / pdfs etc. I have no idea how the transition to another platform would work, so cannot comment on that. However I think the list has lost a lot of vibrancy over recent years as many members now show patterns, work-in-progress etc on Facebook instead of on Arachne. It would certainly be wonderful to be able to include photos etc in one's messages Sue suebabbs...@gmail.com -- Original Message -- From: "Dagmar Beckel Machyckova" To: "Pierre Fouché" Cc: brid...@bigpond.com; lace@arachne.com Sent: 4/2/2020 9:38:39 AM Subject: Re: [lace] Our mail list software >Pierre, I do agree with you. Pierre, I do agree with you. I wouldn’t know how to start a post. How could the transition work? Is it a lot of work to move the archives? [lace] Our mail list software
Dear Brian and fellow Arachnids I have heard that Discourse is currently the most advanced forum hosting platform and that it has the capability to import large complex existing archives. I am equally impressed that it is open source. Things that are good for humanity should be free. I quite like the charm our mailing list that is operating on 90's architecture, but I have to admit that I don't know how to use it. (I had to go look in the arachne handbook to see how to respond to this message, and I'm still not sure that it will work, or if I got some syntax wrong in the subject line...) Which results in my being a "lurker" rather than a participator, and I suspect that I am not the only one. A more user-friendly interface with the community that is easily accessible, easily searchable, with inline multimedia options might be worth looking into? Best wishes from a summery autumn day in Cape Town where we are one week in with our enforced lockdown, and doing well for it. [lace] Our mail list software
Dear All, Firstly I have no idea about programming or software etc. This note to the list is purely based on a discussion being held currently on another list I belong to (Jackrail; Harpsichords and clavichords) They are considering changing to a modern "mail list" programme. I suspect that our programme is quite old by now, so I offer this to those who know better than me. I am not sure about this following statement so please forgive me if I am wrong: "I think that our current list costs money to run and we have a generous benefactor". I think that "Discourse", the programme Jackrail is considering moving to, is free. (see below) Next reason is that besides the proposed new software being 100% open source, it provides for drag and drop photos. (The one thing that made me stop and think about writing about it to Arachne!) The programme is called Discourse and you can read about Discourse here if you have a special interest in it. https://www.discourse.org With that suggestion, I leave it to those who are far more knowledgeable than myself to pursue if it is worthwhile. I can put anyone especially interested and technically capable, in it in touch with the Jackrail convenor. I share this with the best intentions and the last thing I want is for it causes a furore in our happy band list users. We will not be able to compete with Facebook, but perhaps we enjoy improved features? Like I say, I have no idea about the technicalities. Jean and I are in voluntary lockdown being in the mid-80s + risk group. All of you take care. Special thanks to all of you who are health carers from an old "RN" who worked through the isolation hospital era!! Take care.
