[lace] Pag Lace

2007-09-29 Thread Jeriames
Does anyone know where examples of Pag lace can be purchased?
Thanks,
Laurie

Dear Laurie,

A couple weeks ago, I recommended to crocheters the book "A Living Mystery
--- The International Art & History of Crochet", by Annie Louise Potter,
published in 1990, ISBN 1-879409-00-3.

On pages 140-141, Potter writes about Pag in 7 paragraphs, with a color
photo of her kneeling and talking to a crochet worker. Here is some
information
from the Pag text:

"Of particular interest to the history of both lace and crochet is the
Adriatic island of Pag. A tiny dot on the map, this rocky and barren land off
the
coast of Yugoslavia and directly exposed to the cold winds sweeping down from
Mt. Velebit, has been a center for the lace art for over 400 years. Indeed,
the whole economy of Pag has consistently depended upon the making of fine
lace and also crochet for longer than perhaps any other community in the
Western
World. It is unique. Special. Very old."

And:

"Truly a 'Crochet Village', Pag depends on its lace-making and crochet for
its daily economic needs as well as its annual incometoday's distributions
have dwindled to the collectors and tourists who frequent the island in season.
A traveler walking any lane or avenue in the village will see the men and
women of Pag sitting in their doorways making lace and crochet pieces that they
proudly display and sell."

To view:

St. Mary's Church at the center of the town has maintained a complete
collection of what its people do best, crochet and lace. (Per Potter)

If you Google "Lace in St. Mary's Church, Pag, Croatia",there are several
sites that may give more information of interest to you.

[lace] Pag lace

2013-05-23 Thread ameldrum
Hi gentle spiders
I am in Lubljana in Slovenia on holidays and my travelling
companians
and I  have been fortunate to have some informal lessons in Pag
needlelace.
We went well until we needed to do the picot but our two
instructors
seemed unsure of the picot. We then checked the Needlelacetalk
website
and our questions were answered.
The website is wonderful for
instructions and it was also nice to have
some friends to help us get started
and answer questions. The picot is
very round in shape and it must be done a
certain way.

We have seen some wonderful lace in Hungary and now in Slovenia.
The
OIDFA Congress will be held here in 2016 and it will be wonderful. The
lacemakers of Slovenia are so friendly and talented. We have seen so
many
museums and visited some lace groups and attended a book launch
and lecture on
lace in Slovenia. The book will be printed in English
next year and includs a
CD of photos so we must wait til next year
unfortunately.

It is interesting
with a different keyboard so hope my spelling is OK.

from Annette Meldrum
from Australia but currently travelling in
Slovenia.

I have done several internet searches for info on Pag lace, and have found a
few websites with photos. So far none have turned up with any instruction
books. I have found one recent book, but it appears to be about Pag and Pag
lace, but not about how to make it. We recently found a new member who does
know how to make it, so she is our best hope at present. I keep my antennae
out for concrete contacts.

Hi All,

I have a book on Pag Lace, all historyof the area it comes from, but is in
multiple languages. My friend tried to get some of the local ladies to teach
her when in Croatia for an extended period last year, but they were not
obliging.

I have borrowed Elena Dickson's "how to" tape from my local Guild and watched
it with her and she has a copy of the book. Maria crochets well from the
worked lace piece, so I figure if she has basic knotted lace techniques, she
will be able to follow from existing lace.

There is a picture of a doily on the cover and it seems to have some features
of several types of other knotted laces.

Outside Croatia, do not have any suggestions as to where pieces of this lace
can be purchased.

Hi All,

The detail is not all that clear to someone not familiar with the lace.

I stand corrected, you ladies of greater learning are probalbly right. Needle
lace is not something I have attempted, and Knotted needle lace is.

The book is by Borut-Borja Kopani and the English translation of the title is
"Stone and Salt Wrapped Up in Lace". The text is all history of the area, the
only photograph of lace is the one on the cover.
