[lace] Rosaline Perle

2018-03-17 Thread hottleco
Hello All! With counseling from Bev, I was finally able to finish a small
Rosaline motif, Lesson 2 in the Geelen book. Lots of wonky areas but I learned
a lot! Rather than a square tally, I made a small perle & suspended it in the
center with Russian/Herringbone stitch using #28 tapestry & #11 sharps needles.
It might be worth a try to make a larger perle to cover the entire opening
because it would be easier to sew thru, catching the edge of the inner ring.
Making the perle turned out to be quite an adventure because of the long length
of thread needed. There must be an easier way, but I don't know it...yet!
It's posted to Flickr, warts & all. My neighbor just got married so I plan to
use it to decorate a small candle jar, a token gift. More IOLI library books
have arrived so it's time to learn something new! Hope everyone is well &
making more lace. Sincerely, Susan Hottle USA

I haven't tried Rosaline (that's one for the "when I retire" list) but I do
use Bayeux bobbins a lot and sewings are no problem with them - they are my
go-to bobbins where honitons are too light.

Thanks Nancy for confirming my thought that the Bayeux bobbins are a good
weight for this lace. This could be an interesting experiment as I sample

Hi Susan,

I'm no expert but I really love the Bayeux bobbins. Being long simply means
that you need to unwind more to get a big enough loop to get the bobbin
through, but not by much. They are just the right weight for your thread,
and they don't have knobs, bumps, beads, etc. to catch on threads. I've
done sewings with them and like them even better for that than even my
beloved Binche.

Personal opinion of course--YMMV, but that's my vote!

[lace] Rosaline perle

2017-12-01 Thread Susan
Hello Again! My next project is to work with two books that I got from the
IOLI library (Rosaline Lace by Eemans-Moore & Rosaline Perlee by Geelen) to
supplement my book by Judith Cordell. Before I dive in, I need to select
appropriate bobbins & of course, I don’t own Rosaline bobbins! The thread is
specified as 100/2 or 120/2 Egyptian cotton & 12 or 14 bobbins are required. I
have Honiton bobbins & Mechlin bobbins (with beaded shafts). The Honiton seem
too light & the beaded Mechlins are not fun for sewings. I also have Danish,
Midlands & double head Dutch & they seem too heavy. The Bayeux might be the
correct weight but seem too long & unwieldy for sewings. Are there any
suggestions from the experts? Many thanks for any advice. Sincerely, Susan
Hottle

Re: [lace] Rosaline Perle and Rosaline Perle 2

2017-10-24 Thread Jeri Ames
Regarding Susan Hottle's enthusiastic response to discovery (in Ithaca New
York) of two Rosaline Perle books by Judith Cordell - they are helpful not
only to makers of this bobbin lace, but also for explaining to collectors how
this lace is constructed.   The contemporary floral motifs and projects are
charming, and the step-by-step instructions are clear.  Only 14 bobbins are
required to work these motifs, and there are no thread ends to deal with.
The photos and explanations of how to make the tiny perles with a threaded
needle (not bobbins) are particularly interesting.  Yes, they do resemble
pearls.  These, by-the-way, might be used in original ways on other laces or
embroideries.

Cordell's first self-published book was printed in 2011, ISBN
978-0-9570698-0-0.  The second has a date of 2016.  (ISBN below, in Susan's
note.)

A rolled bundle also plays an important part in Withof, and many pieces start
with a bundle that defines a central vein in a leaf. And Cantu (called punto
Venezia in Italian) uses a variation on the bundle to move threads around
internally as the lace proceeds. Both Duchesse and Honiton use a rolled bundle
to move threads from the bottom of one leaf to the top of the next. They don't
exactly start with a bundle but use it frequently.
Here are some links to photos of Honiton, Duchesse and Withof which contain the
rolled bundle.

magenta lines point to the rolled bundle.

In terms of why a lace starts with a bundle -- in Withof I think it is mostly
an aesthetic thing. The sculptured effect is part of the design definition. In
Honiton and Duchesse the purpose is to move threads to where they are needed,
without the necessity of cutting threads off and starting again with new. This
gives a better stability. But the sculptural effect is also used aesthetically.
In Canto-punto-Venezia it also functions to move threads to where they are
needed without cutting off frequently.

I would like to have a better understanding of why a lacemaker would start out
with a rolled clump of threads! And is this the only lace that starts with a

Carolyn Wetzel’s Frisado class & my finished project is posted to Arachne

I did some speed reading & made a few copies then purchased a book from Holly
at ILD. Now that I’m home, I would like to have a better understanding of why
a lacemaker would start out with a rolled clump of threads! And is this the
only lace that starts with a bundle? I vaguely remember a thread bundle in
Rosa Libre but I think that was for moving the threads from one section to
another. Will an expert share some background info on this very lovely lace?
I would like to give it a try. Many thanks. Sincerely, S!
