[lace] starting with Torchon

2011-08-01 Thread hottleco
Hello All! Thanks to all who explained the value of Torchon in the lace
learning process! AND for allowing that there are alternative places to
start!! Just wish I'd had those options available. Hope the IOLI gathering is
a great success & that everyone has a good time while learning something new.
Sincerely, Susan Hottle, Erie, PA USA

Doreen Wright's Bobbin Lacemaking starts with point ground. Also various books
about Honiton, Flanders etc start with the basics of that type of lace.

In some ways torchon isn't the simplest because, being so geometric, every
mistake stands out, unlike many other laces where mistakes can blend in. But
that's one of the reasons for starting with it - because any mistake are so
visible and it's repetitive, it teaches the stitches used in other laces.
The geometric nature of it also helps with developing natural tension. It
takes quite a lot of skill to produce a perfectly even and accurate piece of
torchon lace.

As an aside, there's a seller on ebay at the moment selling three torchon
patterns as Brugge on the grounds that they were bought from the Kantcentrum
in Brugge. Item number 250864281428 is one of them. I haven't bothered
contacting the seller because some aren't happy to be corrected.
