Re: [lace] Thresds
Black Chantilly laces from France and Belgium are made with black silk. The first one with silk which was dyed with something with a salt of iron (SO4) wich damage those laces after a while. Re: [lace] Thresds
Hi Devon I first heard about black lace being made white and then dyed at a talk given by Eunice Arnold in the 1980s and she was talking about thread lace, not silk. I have a piece of white kat stitch with a design and the half stitch areas that make me suspect it was intended to be dyed. I also have a piece of black Honiton. I have never tried making Honiton using black thread, I think taking sewings would be difficult. This is proving an interesting subject. Re: [lace] Thresds
I visited Grammont many years ago to see Chantilly lace in the museum there - at least I think it was a museum, I do not remember clearly. But I do remember that we were told that the lace was made with black silk thread, and that the silk reacted badly to the dye, therefore the lace did not have a long life! I would like to have known what dye was used, but no one knew. Kathleen Sent from my iPad - To unsubscribe send email to majord...@arachne.com containing the line: unsubscribe lace y...@address.here. G'day Friends, > > Because black is so difficult to work with, much of the black lace was > made using white thread and subsequently dyed black. Well I certainly have never found black any more difficult to work with than white so have trouble understanding this. Alex, what evidence is there for this statement.
