Re: [lace] Travel and customs
Something I haven't seen mentioned yet - although I admit, I've only skimmed the travel messages - are the luggage locks that are keyed so that US airport security can unlock it with one of several master keys. The locks are specifically marked so that TSA agents know they can be keyed open. My hubby and I used (no affiliation, etc.) Samsonite TSA locks to and from England last year and had no problems anywhere. I couldn't begin to guess if TSA-compatible locks are sold outside the USA, but of course there are online suppliers. In general, you can always lock your luggage in the US. It's just a question of whether it will be cut off if there is a need for inspection when you aren't there, or having keys handy if you are. Just thoughts. [lace] Travel and customs
Hi, The Israeli air line El-Al allows locked suitcases. All luggauges is x-rayed before being put on the plane. In cases where they want to check the lugguage they ask you to leave it unlocked and will lock it for you later on. This happened to me only once on a flight from Munich to Israel. I traveled a lot since 9/11. Twice to the US and several times to Europe and I have never encountered any trouble during those flights. I don't always travel El Al I also use other airlines. My suitcase is usually locked and has another belt going around it which I secure with a large safety pin. While traveling in the US I left my suitcase unlocked but kept the belt with the safety pin on. The suitcase was opened only once and I noticed it because I had a big plastic garbage bag over my packing just in case the suitcase gets stuck on a trolly in the rain, this bag was shoved a bit aside but that was all. I have never traveled with my pillow as carry on but last time when I came back from the UK , when I unpacked I discovered that I left my nail file in my hand bag and nobody noticed it. Many times it all depends on the security checkers at the gates and how concentrated they are on what is appearing in front of them on the screen.
