Re: [lace] free day at convention
Back to the IOLI convention thread for a moment - I just came up with an idea... The middle day is an equalizer to some extent, but not all vigorous people will want to go on a tour - it costs a lot! How about having a separate one-day class on Wednesday, in addition to the trips? This way some people can have a free day to relax or go on trips, and some people can take more classes. Also, maybe this way some people could just show up for this one-day class and some shopping, instead of the whole convention, especially if they can't afford or don't have time for the whole week? And I guess this would let the people who are teaching a 24-hour class actually take a class as well, if they wanted too... Does this sound like a reasonable idea? Just for future reference... Also, yes, by all means let's have a lace boot camp!! Wake-up call 6am, make 10 tallies as exercise before breakfast, ... G Seriously, I do think that would be a good idea - an official separate track for people who want intensive classes and don't care about living conditions. At 04:14 PM 3/24/2005, you wrote: How about having a separate one-day class on Wednesday, in addition to the trips? Can be done. Has been done. Might be done again in the future. Each host group sets the class profile for their conference. Probably the only required events are classes and the annual meeting. From there, traditions develop but not every group does every possible event. We usually find a banquet, and one or two other group meals. The sales room, exhibit room and other events usually get on the program. Sometimes there have been 5 day classes that had no rest day. There have been Saturday classes, Wednesday classes, and various combinations. Part of it is determined by the requirements of a particular class or teacher. Some may be determined by the space and days available to hold the classes. If only Monday through Friday is available in the hotel, then that precludes Saturday anything. We don't know what has gone on behind the scenes between the host group and the hotel people but you can be assured that there has been lengthly discussions and lots of planning. The size of the host group affects how many activities can be done. A large group has more manpower (womanpower?) than a small group. We are just grateful that each group has been brave enough to serve as host, and accept the schedule as they are able to do it. I think there are evaluation forms available at each conference for comments and suggestions. Please take time to fill these out. Maybe, someday, you will be part of a host group, and will get to experience a conference from the inside out. G This conference schedule is set and published. You now know what to expect in Denver. Ideas and suggestions now can go to Tulsa, Montreal, and Crystal Lake --- the next three which are in various stages of planning at this time. I would guess that Tulsa's schedule might even be tentatively set by now. The others could be very interested in your comments this August. I'll get off my soap box now. Anxiously waiting, along with the rest, to hear what class(es) I get. Alice in Oregon -- where winter came as soon as it was Spring (rain, hail, cold). I am beginning to think maybe we need a convention within a convention, sort of a lace boot camp for people who want to live cheaply and work intensively at the convention to bring in the younger people. I think that's what the Harrisburg group was trying to do, but they met with such fierce anger from some of the oldtimers that didn't want their convention tampered with. Robin P.
