[lace] fungi and new lace pillow

2011-07-27 Thread Dona Bushong
Yesterday while walking our pups, my husband and I stumbled upon an amazing
mushroom. It looks as if a fairy has placed a lace skirt around it. Now we
don't get a lot in the way of lace around here so if something remotely
resembles lace I take note.
I at first assumed it was a toadstool but further research shows that it's
indeed edible. Unfortunately the way it reproduces is not by spreading
spores via air like most mushrooms but by having the smell of carrion thus
attracting flies, with the flies spreading the spores. The common names of
this mushroom are bamboo fungus, bamboo stinkhorn or veiled lady. The latin
name is Phallus indusiatus. I've uploaded a few photos to my webshots
album, Dona B if you're interested in seeing my lacy mushroom.
On the true lace front - this past weekend my husband and I completed a new
roller lace pillow. It is based on Doris Southards design. My dad helped me
make a couple of these about 15 years ago when my daughters were learning to
make lace. I've since used them for many projects including my current one
of yardage lace for a Christening gown. I decided that I'd like a slightly
larger pillow for the next yardage as it is a bit wider so I increased the
dimensions from Mrs. Southards original design. My husband made the
platform and box for me and I was able to pick up the rest of the supplies
while back in the States earlier this month. I'm please with the results
and hope to get the next lace started soon. I'll also put a photo of my new
pillow up on the webshots site if anyone is interested in seeing it. The
directions are very clear and construction quite easy.

off the coast.

Dona,

Thanks for sharing your mushroom pictures! It indeed is very lacy looking.
Definetly NOT torchon!!! Needle lace or Bucks maybe?

I like your new roller pillow. I also have one made from Mrs. Southard's
instructions. Mine is a medium blue. My Dad and Mom helped me make it 30 years
ago when I'd just started making lace. Both of them are gone now so it brings
back some memories. I don't use it very often for projects as I don't make
much yardage. For many years I've set it up with an easy and colorful torchon
piece and taken it to lace demos as a have a go pillow. Have it sitting in the
back seat of my car as I am going to the grand summer opening of our local
farmers market. There will also be spinners and a potter doing their thing as
well. Hope that the weather will be a little cooler but that is not likely!

Good luck with your lacemaking!

Re: [lace] fungi and new lace pillow

2011-07-28 Thread Carol

Hello Fellow Arachnids,

I have been away for five months (terrible withdrawal symptoms from a lack
of lace and Arachne ...) looking after elderly and quite poorly parents, but
am back now, and hoping I haven't forgotten everything about lace! But -
Donna's new pillow reninded me of my new(ish) acquisition.

When I rushed up to North Norfolk to look after my parents, I had my very
large lace pillow in the car - providentally. On one of the more pleasant
days, I took my pillow outside, with my stand. The phone rang, I stood up,
and as said lace piow is large and heavy, it decided to topple off the
'table' part of the stand. A neighbour heard my chuntering, and popped his
head over the fence, asked what on earth was the matter, and what on earth
was I doing!I explained, and told him why I was a tad disgruntled, upon
which he took the stand away, and brought it back several days later with an
adaptation - a much larger 'table' bit, all beautifully stained, and ready
to go.

I am now delighted with it - but am wondering just how I can persuage him
that, as he has now retired from his carpentry business, he needs a small
lathe to make me loads more bobbins!

Oh my dear! You must tell him that he has earned his wings with
lacemakers and as a reward, he now has the opportunity to make new
stands for lacemakers from all over the world!!! You may want to ease
his anxiety by telling him that his requests will be very manageable,
given our very shallow pockets and our relatively small numbers. Still,
if he makes a stunning stand which is celebrated on Arachne, he may have
more trade than he can manage!

My very best wishes to both of you... and I'd be happy to see a photo
of his "new and improved" table!!!
